We hired Fernando to build a backyard playground for our family. He quoted us 1.5 to 2 weeks for completion. It took six. There was little to no communication about any timeline extension. He would say he was coming and not show at all. He would commit to being there at 8am and arrive at 4 or 5pm, then work for an hour and leave. Days would pass with nothing. We paid 75% upfront and barely saw him. It got to the point where we told him directly that it felt like we were being scammed. Only after we threatened to terminate services and request a refund did he begin showing up more than he had been, which, given how absent he was, was not a high bar. By that point we were already 2.5 weeks in with no end in sight. Fernando offered a discount to acknowledge the delays. He did not honor it. We paid in full, including 75% upfront, which in hindsight was a significant risk given how things unfolded. We were more patient and understanding than most would have been. His answer to nearly every concern was “don’t worry” and there was always reason to worry. He appears amicable and like he’s listening, but it does not translate. Beyond the timeline, there were ongoing issues with the scope of work. What he initially began building looked nothing like what we discussed in our consultation. Several agreed-upon features were either missing or had to be reiterated multiple times throughout the project. He repeatedly tried to redirect us toward his own vision rather than building what we asked for and contracted. We had to consistently advocate for our own project. Now that the project is supposedly complete, he has yet to return to finish what remains: staining the wood, securing the rock wall, installing swing hardware we purchased, properly fixing the slide, and repairing the roof structure on the swing set, which caved in after a light rain. He committed to a return date, did not show, and has not provided a new date when asked. A separate contractor came out and identified multiple areas of structural concern, including improper angles and work that was clearly rushed and thrown together last minute. He also built the deck at the wrong height, meaning the slides we originally purchased no longer fit. We had to buy replacements entirely and that additional expense is on him but coming from our pockets. We are now also dealing with a termite problem, which we brought to his attention. We have now had to hire someone else to complete and correct work we already paid for in full. We have young children who have been eagerly waiting to use this playground. We worked hard for this money and it is genuinely heartbreaking to be in this position. To be fair, the core structure is decent, and Fernando does appear to have some skill in building. But skill alone does not make a contractor reliable or professional. If you are considering hiring him, I suggest going in with very clear written agreements, hold back as much payment as possible until completion, and be prepared to stay on top of every detail throughout the process. We would not hire him again. It’s unfortunate because we had several backyard projects we wanted him to do and contract with him long term.
