Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

What tools do you need to mount a TV on the wall?

You need several tools to mount a TV on a wall. Often, the tools that are needed include safety goggles, a stud finder or hollow wall anchors, a level, a power drill and bits of various sizes. You’ll also likely need a socket wrench and screwdriver set. If you don’t have these tools, hire a TV wall mount installer near you who can do the job and bring their own tools.

Are TV wall mounts universal?

TV wall mounts are generally universal. This is because most TV wall mounts comply with standards set forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Thanks to this set of standards, any mount you buy is likely to be a universal TV wall mount. However, exceptions do apply. Certain brands may not follow VESA standards, and though this is rare, it’s worth checking to make sure you’re buying a VESA-compatible universal TV mount.

Can you mount any TV?

Many TVs can be mounted with standard equipment. However, you need to cover a few details before mounting a TV. Know the size and weight of your TV before you purchase a mount. Additionally, make sure your TV follows the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standards by looking for the VESA logo followed by a number. Match this number to the VESA-compatible mount to ensure compatibility. If you’re unsure if your TV can be mounted, contact the best professional TV mounting services in your area to see if they can offer guidance and help you with the installation.

How do I hide the wires to my wall-mounted TV?

You can hide wires from a hanging TV on a wall by putting them behind the wall. However, this requires some drilling or buying an in-wall power kit. Alternatively, you can use what’s called a “raceway” — a hollow metal or plastic channel — that runs down your wall and hides your cables from sight. To get the job done right, and avoid risking damage to your wall, hire a professional TV wall mount installer near you.

Can you mount a TV without studs?

Yes, you can mount a TV without studs using hollow wall anchors, which are used to hang objects on a wall, according to Digital Trends. However, these have limits. Make sure they can handle the weight of your TV.

If you’re not comfortable mounting a TV on the wall without studs by yourself, hire a top-rated professional in your area instead.

Can a TV mounting service also install a home theater system?

Yes, a TV mounting service is often able to install a home theater system as well. Companies and technicians who offer flat-screen TV wall mount installation service may offer package deals on installing surround sound and other parts of a home theater installation. To find the best TV mounting service near you that can install a surround sound system in your home, compare companies side by side. Choose a service that’s within your budget and book an appointment instantly.

What type of TV mount do I need?

There are several types of TV mounts, including fixed mounts, tilting mounts and full-motion mounts. A fixed mount is sturdy but offers no movement, and a tilting mount tilts vertically. A full-motion TV mount swivels and tilts for the maximum number of possible viewing options. You can also mount your TV from above with a ceiling TV mount. Whichever TV mount you choose, ensure it can support your TV’s weight and size. If you need help choosing and installing a TV mount, contact a TV wall mount installer near you.

Jeff was great. He was early and very efficient. We didn't have a long enough extension cord so he went out and bought us one, and didn't charge us for it. Very reasonable prices for excellent service. Jeff removed a wall-mounted TV and replaced it with a different one. For someone with a bum shoulder, Jeff was a real lifesaver. Our family looks forward to working with JTV Installs again in the future.

ORIGINAL REVIEW - Overall, Sam was a nice guy and I appreciated his effort. From purely a job completion perspective, he was not able to complete the work technically and actually ended up damaging what he did work on. Because he wasn’t able to complete the job I needed, I couldn’t even have him fix what he broke so I’m left with a bigger job than what I started with. Like I said, nice guy and I wish I could recommend him but can’t based on my experience. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8/4 UPDATE - So now that Sam responded with false information after I feel like I gave him a fair review, I now feel I have to provide further clarification to address each of his statements. "I told you in the beginning that you had the wrong tv mount to mount your tv over/on your stone fireplace." - He did tell me this, but it's because he wanted me to get a mount that would not rotate and swivel out like I needed because it would make it easy for him to mount. It was not that the mount couldn't be used, it was that Sam didn't have the technical ability to do it. "So we tried anyway, and when we did a weight test the stone cracked." This is incorrect. The stone cracked when he drilled into it and then inserted a lag bolt that was too large for the hole. It caused it to expand with too much pressure and cracked it right through the middle. This left the mount with only one hole usable, that when you then did a weight test, it just bent off the wall. This is evidenced by when he was drilling the lag bolt in, he went, oops, which caused me to ask what happened and him to respond with the stone cracked. "I told you what kind of mount to get, you said that you would order it, and we’ll do it the right way. I left with out charging you anything, thinking that I’ll be coming back after you receive the right mount, to mount your tv over/on your stone fireplace." - He is right here, he did not charge me anything....because he didn't do the job and damaged my property. I should have pursued action to have him pay to fix the stone in the middle of my fireplace that is now cracked all the way through the middle. But I didn't. He did offer to come back if I ordered a different mount, but 1) I'm not ordering a different mount with less capability because the tradesman doesn't have the technical ability to install the one I had, and 2) How could i trust his work to come back again if he left with it worse off than when he arrived. And for awareness, I hung the TV the following weekend on my own with help from a friend. Took about two hours and it works perfectly, with the original mount I had purchased. The issue wasn't in the mount but in the service. I thought two stars was a fair review given he left with damage to my property, but now with his false reply to make it seem like he did no wrong, i'm compelled to respond with the actual truth. Like i said initially, Sam was a nice guy and if you look at all of his reviews, he's done a lot of great work for people but for my experience, with a job that was probably a little more technical, he came up short. Folks don't like negative reviews but unfortunately, it's the actuality of the experience/service I received.
