Our son has been taking lessons from Mr. Hession for about 4 years. From the beginning lessons, we noted and observed Mr. Hession’s teaching style of how our son’s was receptive to his instructions – to us, a good rapport from instructor to student is very important. We are extremely impressed and satisfied. Mr Hession’s lesson plan includes the rotations of the music genres like bluegrass, jazz, classical, contemporary helps grow our son’s interested in learning piano and also helps find and adapt his music skills. Mr Hession encourages improvisation which is amazing and in which we are so glad to see – creativeness is important to us. He tailored his music piece selections to our son’s progress and skills, the type of instructions we CAN only get from a very dynamic teacher and which we CAN’T get from computer software or from any piano books. The recitals annually that Mr Hession organizes teach his students to play in front of a crowd, boost their confidence and make them more attentive to their pieces in daily practices. They know that they will play the pieces in front of a crowd. We have seen clearly our son’s tremendous improvement in his piano skills and techniques. Many people saw and heard our son playing piano in our church’s music concerts, school and other events were also very impressed and often talked with us about him. Mr Hession is an amazing piano teacher. He met all of our expectations and more. I would highly recommend Mr Hession as a piano teacher and have recommended him to many of our closest friends.

We attended Hugh Hession's piano recital this past weekend, our second recital overall, and were treated to a very nice event. Students of different skill levels performed admirably with a few standouts including some who played their pieces by heart. Subsequent to the performance we were treated to some nice snacks and refreshments including fresh, whole strawberries and the likes. The birthday rendition by Hugh for one of the audience members who had a birthday that day was special. Thanks for the hard work, Hugh.

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

I teach piano in a variety of ways from the common "formal" style of "series" lesson and theory books to actually learning chords, scales and their relationships, along with improvisation and ear training. One style incorporates reading notes and the other, being able to play by merely looking at a chord chart. I also arrange songs for clients and provide audio production services as well as studio session work and performance.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

The most common question that people ask an instructor is how long they've been teaching. That's important, however always look for a teacher with a good personality and enjoys what they are doing. Are they passionate? You can tell alot about a teacher by talking to them first. Also, do inquire about teaching style and curriculum, length of lesson, payment (per lesson, one month at a time, etc), and cancellation policy.
