I hired 50 shades painting to clean the siding on my house. I had a lot of mold and mildew on the north side and some on the rest of the house. He was on time and did a great job. He ever cleaned my deck, which was not part of the work. I will use he sevices again. I have recommended him to my friends and neighbors.

John Brammer is about as professional as you can get. He takes his time and gives you a good, honest and very competitive quote. When he comes back and does the work he you will not be disappointed I promise. He took much care in taping off the house so when he spray my deck it would be protected. We marvel everyday about how good our deck looks. I highly recommend Brammer Quality Painting.

Over the last fifteen years or so, Honey Do Construction has done a wide variety of work around our house: large deck, basement finishing, hardwood flooring, kitchen remodeling, and a major main level renovation and addition. Parts of that work involved tricky applications of new material into existing structures. The work has been uniformly excellent. Company owner Clayton Oleson has been sensitive to what we wanted to get done and offered productive suggestions that moved us in the right directions. He is a thoughtful, creative craftsman and a hard worker. He is up to date on the latest products. He honors his cost estimates and gets work done on time. We have been completely satisfied with all of his work.

Russell and his crew entirely leveled a very uneven yard and seeded. I had an old railroad tie retaining wall taken out and replaced with block along with an area done with matching edging and rock near deck and back patio, creating a clean and inviting space. Cutting Hedge Services did exactly what they said, when they said and were professional. Communication was excellent throughout the project and when they left everything was cleaned up and tidy. Pricing was competitive; I would most definitely recommend this firm.

Jeremy came and gave us a quote for our roof in a timely manner. It was a competitive price and so went with them because their communication was great, quick responses to emails. Jeremy moved jobs around to fit us in due to our circumstances, we needed our roof done ASAP. Him and the crew did a fantastic job, finished quickly and cleaned up well. I have already referred them to three other people and will continue to use their services myself!

If you want it done right, then hire Ted. We had multiple projects besides the pressure washing that needed done. Ceiling fan hung, house numbers put up, deck stairs repaired, etc and had him quote on it together. And now I know how to clean our fence myself. If you don't want to learn anything that's fine too, just tell him up front. Our back steps were dangerously near collapse, but now two of us can stand on one step at the same time with no worries. Ted might come and go depending on the weather and other jobs he has, so just be ready for that. For us, that seemed perfectly reasonable. I can recommend him without reservation.

Eric was easy to work with and did a good job on our landscaping. He also made sure we are happy with the end results. He helped me by briniging in the dirt for the landscaping himself and also accomodated the request to put lattice around the deck which was not planned initially and quoted us fairly. It took little longer than we expected but we are happy with the end result. We will hire him for future projects.

Jake and his team were great! We were out of town for a week and while we were gone they did the demo and new deck install so that when we got home everything was done and looked great. Very professional in making sure we were all on the same page before the work began. Kept us up to date on the progress, which was nice. Their bid was very competitive, and they even amended the bid when the price of materials when down. Because of all of this we will use them again.

Matt and his crew did a great job of communicating the job details, caring about getting them right the first time. I appreciated the care he took and the way he thought through both projects before starting. He updated our deck with new railings and decking, along with new framing to bring the height up to meet another section of the deck. He also removed and replaced old siding from our dormers - both jobs were completed quickly and for a fair price (and in substantially warm temps!) I will hire him again!

Our favorite part about working with Dvorak Construction was how willing the owner was to work with us on creating a design for our deck that would truly make both my husband and I excited about it. We had several ideas, and needed help ironing out the details. The end product is exactly what we had both hoped for and more!

We needed some replacement boards on our deck and new handrails. Mac arrived on time spent a good amount of time inspecting the deck educating us about our city codes and asking questions to find out what we wanted done. He also took a look around and noticed that one of our gutters was plugged! He said that he would take care of that for us now....no charge! His prices are reasonable and he showed up and got the job done. I would highly recommend Mac and his team!

VERY REASONABLE, CLEAN, AND (finally!) PROFESSIONAL!! We are so thankful we found Colten! He was prompt, courteous, and in in spite of working very fast, he was meticulous. No messes to clean up after the jobs were done. We ask him to do several jobs around the house; most were maintenance, some installation. He cut to fit shelves in closet and installed them; the shelves required a cut- out to fit around a pipe. He installed and caulked one bath surround and re- caulked another bath to correct a poorly done job by another company. He made some repairs to the deck. He repaired an area of a wall and wallpapered it. Cut and installed more shelving, and a few other maintence jobs. This is highly unusual to say but EVERY JOB WAS PERFECTLY DONE! If you hire any other handyman, you are throwing the dice. We had never met Colten, we're not related or anything; this is an authentic rating! Colten even suggested a temporary fix for our deck handrail if the ironwork piece needed took awhile to come in; that's above and beyond!

A very good piece of work. My deck, containing hot tub (no longer used), was in dire need of replacing. I thought and hoped ‘wood rot’, but had niggling thought of termites. Was termites and they were also in house structure. Love my new smaller deck, thrilled with innovative railing. Lots of structural damage repaired. Am keeping his contact info for any future house needs.

E & S Home Repair built our new composite deck and we couldn't be happier! The process of working with Jeff was smooth, with very easy communication and responsiveness to any requests we had. The price was extremely reasonable. We feel we really lucked out finding E&S and are definitely going to hire them again for future projects.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
