I have hired Elwood and Amanda of Creative Touch Construction twice. I purchased a 100 year old house that had a sagging roof. There were no supports in the attic. Elwood and his team raised the roof from inside, inch by inch, and built in supports. The reinforcement is now the strongest part of the roof. They were methodical and precise, which allowed the entire sagging area to be brought up without breaking my ceiling, damaging support walls, or the roof. Elwood and his team were always on time, completed the process on schedule (three days start to finish), and were very affordable. That project cost me just over $2500. When you see that your roof is caving in, you never think it can be saved for such a reasonable rate...but it was. I really feel they took the time they needed to make everything perfect, really perfect. The second time I hired them is to correct woodwork that a less experienced contractor had previously mishandled. Beautiful woodwork is the one of the greatest features of a 100 year old home. A previous contractor had destroyed my built-ins, my interior doors, my baseboards and chair railings and butlers pantry when they sanded against the grain, applied stain over unprepared wood, stained over hardware and paint. The previous contractor had damaged my woodwork by gouging it and digging deep cuts from an inexperienced worker using a belt sander. Elwood and his team took the time to sand all the wood doors, trim and built-ins, bringing back the beautiful grain. They replaced missing woodwork so that it matched the old pieces. They literally breathed life back into my historic home. What really impressed me was how his team would find something that needed attention, and they'd immediately address it and make it right. Elwood served as the general contractor of his team, holding everyone to the highest professional standards. They are truly craftsmen in a world where it seems most contractors do whatever they can to cut corners. Elwood and Amanda paid such attention to detail, such a passion into their work, that it was clear that the end product was something they'd want to have in their own home. I would recommend them whole-hearted. I found that some vendors on Thumbtack and HomeAdvisor have created false reviews, or didn't guarantee their work. I do not believe that to be so of Creative Touch Construction Services. If you choose to use a different contractor, I highly recommend you do the homework to make sure you're hiring a truly qualified professional. I am happy to back up my review with before and after photos upon request to my email at AngelaO@cox.net. My house is located in the Steunenberg Historic District in Caldwell, Idaho.

Jeff is very capable at his craft. I gave him an old dining chair seat bottom which needed replaced. It had been manufactured back in the 70s out of press board, damaged from too much weight sitting in it. He took that seat, without the chair n managed to reconstruct it, making it better than probably those (factory) constructed today. I've done some woodworking in the past myself n felt he is very good at what he does. Thank u Jeff Watson

Elvis is a very nice guy who did a great job. His painting skills are fantastic. Painted our bathroom walls, woodwork and cabinets. Absolutely beautiful. After installing beautiful granite countertops and new sinks there was a problem in getting the sink drains right but he kept coming back until the problem was fixed. Highly recommended. Honest, trustworthy and very reliable.

McKinley came to my home quickly gave me a good price quote for the job and good recommendations for material. McKinley had immediate availablity to do the job and completed the job quickly with good quality. McKinley went above and beyond and took care of all our needs. He was available anytime by phone for any questions. I’m so happy we found him! Our nasty basement carpet was replaced with beautiful waterproof vinyl and new baseboards!

Custom design and building ... I cover all areas of general carpentry and construction, everything between the dirt and shingles

    About

Custom is a buss word that fly's around allot when the job is not truly custom. Stock doors & drawers in set sizes are pulled from the bin from different batches of wood never to match each other. When I build the same piece of wood lines up over its exact match whether door, drawer, head piece, etc. This gives the cabinet a feel & look of unity, completeness. Each wall cabinet is built to that walls dimension, no 3" or 4" fillers are ever used to make the stock cabinet fit the wall dimension.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
