Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

What is the cheapest way to move long distance?

The cheapest way to move long distance is to plan ahead. This allows you to capitalize on several money-saving strategies. For example, you may consider renting a portable moving container. These are often cheaper than moving trucks, though moving truck rentals are a great option for moderately sized homes.

Planning ahead also gives you time to start looking around for free moving boxes and supplies. You might also be able to snag discounts from moving companies if you book far out in advance and ask movers for a deal. Try not to move during the peak season (spring or summer), as prices tend to be highest during that time.

Contact the best long-distance movers in your area to get free estimates and figure out a way to save money.

How much does it cost to move out of state?

Moving out of state costs an average of $5,630, according to the American Moving & Storage Association. However, this is just an estimate — how much you’ll pay to move out of state will likely depend on the weight of your belongings, if you need storage, the distance of the move and more.

To avoid any surprising or hidden fees, get free estimates from movers near you.

How many movers should I hire for my long-distance move?

To figure out how many movers you need, take the size of your home, the number of items you need to move and the weight of those items to estimate how many movers you might need.

For example, a studio or one-bedroom apartment might take two movers to load and unload your belongings efficiently. A two- or three-bedroom home might require three or more movers. And a three- or four-bedroom house might require four movers.

Ask moving companies in your area how many movers — and how many hours — it may take to complete your long-distance move.

I highly recommend this company for all your moving needs; packing, unpacking, furniture assembly, long distance move, etc. Dave and his crew packed, loaded and unpacked my entire apartment for a long distance move from Chicago to Texas! Not only were they very professional, organized and diligent, they made sure every single one of my items was well taken care off and safely delivered. Upon arrival, they unpacked and assembled my apartment including all furniture in record time. The best part of it all was the price! They gave me the best quote out of all the moving companies I spoke to (I had atleast 8-10 quotes). Dave kept open communication with me until the move was complete, ensuring that everything was done according to plan. Look no further and hire these guys for your move!

AmerApex helped us move from our high-rise condo in Chicago to a 3-floor townhome in the Bay Area. They helped us pack up most of our things (and the car) and load it into the truck, and it only took 3 days to arrive! Alex and his team are responsive, highly professional, neat, and respectful. I would highly recommend them to anyone doing a long distance move!

They were the very best! Everything was securly wrapped. My belonging had to moved from my home in Chicago, two storage units and then off to South Carolina. They delivered exactly when they said they would. Even after the long drive they moved everything in our home and set-up as promised. They were resonably priced and my belongings didn't have to travel long distance with other people's belongings, like most long distant movere require.there was not even a nick on one piece of furniture, i was very impressed with how they wrapped everything very secure. The owner of the company it on top of all the details and his employees were acceptional! Thank you Eko outstanding job! Ann Gaynor

I got three quotes for my long distance move and went with the more reasonable estimate (and pleasant process) from Moving Solutions CH. The move was immediately brokered out to MAP Moving and Storage of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Be prepared to be asked to pay more money on move day. Elevator fees, long carry fees, and charged for having more items than quoted for (live and learn, don't hire a company who hasn't actually seen what you're moving). (The foreman and movers were very hard workers though). At delivery, my belongings were in a semi-trailer with other households, heavy items on top. Furniture reassembly is supposed to be included but the movers hired at my destination to unload had a difficult time and I had to reassemble everything myself. All in all, I'm grateful that I received ALL of my items and that more items weren't damaged, but I attribute that to packing them myself. I ended up paying almost $2,000 more than what was quoted.

We hired STI Long Distance Moving two days before we moved from Chicago to Dallas and Nick was so accommodating in getting the last minute request worked out. He was upfront about all the charges and the estimate was accurate and no surprise fees. Oscar and his crew in Chicago did a fantastic job packing and making sure everything was wrapped up and protected. Adam and his crew arrived in Dallas four days later and were great unloading and took the time to go through the entire inventory list to make sure we had everything. Would definitely recommend STI!

I hired Chicagoland Moving & Storage to move me from Chicago to Denver. They were very responsive and the owner came to my home and gave me an in person quote with absolutely no hidden fees, which remained unchanged from start to finish. The price was very competitive and they delivered my belongings to Denver, in their own truck - not shared with another family, exactly when they said they would (and much faster than other movers could), in just 2 days with no additional cost for expedited delivery, unlike many competitors. There was nothing broken or damaged and both crews (those who packed my stuff in Chicago and those who unpacked me in Denver) were extremely friendly and professional. I would highly recommend them for both local and long distance moves. Thank you for the stress-free move!

Pros: professional, efficient and genuinely good guys operate the packing and unpacking aspects of the job. Great customer service and the response by the management was fast. They didn’t damage anything and the price is the best I could find Cons: Can do better with the ETA of long distance moves. Also would reflect well if they credited you for arrivals that are outside of quoted time of arrivals. I’m also 99% sure they charged me like $50 more than what I should’ve been, due to what seems like an honest miscalculation (not to say they’re scamming). Overall: Would definitely use them again, simply because the price is great, the loading and unloading was fast and they got the job done. Also, from what I’ve heard, other places will charge more but you’ll still have these same issues. Better to go for the better price
