Reece does a fantastic job. We have had him over to assemble office furniture, an outdoor shed and nursery furniture. He comes prepared and is very efficient. He will not gouge you on price and schedules quickly. He is a definite hire. Dan-Lemont IL

Mark's service was amazing. He came to my place of work and picked up the cabinet doors which I wanted the center cut out for glass. He delivered them back to my place of work the same day. Thank you much, Mark.

Walt made open shelf cabinets, hung 20 shelves, and installed beadboard for my office. He was quick to reply to all communications, professional and always on time. We made a few adjustments to the projects and he was very accommodating and willing to change things. Overall a great job at a reasonable rate, with the work done by a super friendly guy. I would definitely recommend him.

I had Ram install all new crown molding throughout my house, including kitchens and bathrooms. Everything was installed and finished within two days of start - and it looks amazing. Some of the walls in my home are uneven and not perfectly square around the cabinets, but Ram was still able to install the crown molding with a very professional look. One other comment....When installing the crown molding in my bathroom, there was a slight issue with my bathtub faucet and didn't notice the issue until after they completely finished installing the crown molding. I let Raul know there was a slight issue and he came out same day had it fixed in no time. Anyone that has ever dealt with renovations knows there are always little unexpected issues that arise during the renovation process. I think what separates Ram from other contractors is that he is willing to own his work and fix any issues that arise - and fix them immediately. I highly recommend Ram!

Eddie has done a great job. He has been wildly responsive to concerns, and the end result looks great. He laid tile, built a custom cabinet in a tricky location, and then trimmed out my cabinets to look like they were customized all along. We came up with innovative solutions for the cabinet above my refrigerator, so the new, taller fridge fit AND my cabinet doors open freely. It is a brilliant solution you'll have to ask him about.

Dan designed a custom china cabinet for our Downtown Chicago condominium. He was able to turn my dream sketch into a reality. We are beyond happy with our cabinets, as they have transformed our space. Dan oversaw the installation and was resilient in having everything in exact position--a God-send for a perfectionist like myself. Most noteworthy, however, is the enthusiasm Dan shares with his clients. We truly feel that Dan has become a part of our family and are just itching to find a new project for him to takeover!

I hired them to paint our oak cabinet door and drawer fronts only. The finish looks OK except there are several minor defects including drilled holes in the top of the doors which are visible and a few little dings on the cabinet faces. We now need to do a little touch up ourselves to correct these minor defects. However, his price was SIGNIFICANTLY better than any of the other bids we got and so for that reason I still give him a B+. If you are a perfectionist, you might want to pay the extra money to get a defect-free end product.

My wife and I bought a house that was a bit of a fixer-upper in Chicago. The built-in hutch was showing a lot of wear in the finish, and the original wood work in the kitchen and dining room were looking pretty dismal. We were recommended Fay Furniture by some friends after they had worked with them to completely refinish all of the wood in their home. Within a day of calling to set up an appointment, the Fays were at our home looking at the wood and discussing possibilities with us. We had some ideas about the color we were looking for (a darker espresso that still showed the wood grain - it matched our furniture) and they were off. It seemed like a huge job, but they were finished within three weeks. That's all the trim around the floors and ceiling, the hutch, and the kitchen cabinets. The level of detail was simply amazing - the color of all of the refinished wood in both rooms matches perfectly with our furniture, and they were absolute perfectionists when it came to making sure we were satisfied customers. So what else can I say? Being a small, family-run business, they were extremely attentive to our needs, gave us an amazing price ($150 less than the nearest of 3 quotes), and left us with a beautiful home. They have made customers for life!

He is a former house inspector. This is an extremely valuable perspective when you consider making changes to your home. He is thoughtful and measured. He completed several extensive projects in my home: replacing wood flooring in my entranceway with tile, refacing my fireplace surround where he demolished existing large boulder stones and replaced with sleek flat tile and even suggested I lower the hearth to the floor for a more modern look. He shrunk the footprint of an oversized kitchen island that involved moving cabinetry and plumbing and preparing the base for a new top and he helped me redo my powder room and replaced my '80s mirrored cabinet fronts with custom stained wood. I am happy and very pleased with the work he has done on my home. He made a number of suggestions about how to maintain my home going forward. I appreciated this expertise.

Nick, We would like to thank you and your entire team for the great job you did on our kitchen project. Starting with Alan helping us navigate through the overall kitchen design and canbinet and countertop selection, through all the modifications we requested on our first floor to the final cabinet installation. You electricians, plumber, trim carpenter, drywall crew and tile crew all did a great job, not to mention your hardwood floor guys. When we first contacted you we had no idea that you offered all these services. We made some changes during the project and you still completed everything when you said you would and at the price you quoted. What a great job, we could not be happier. Thanks again Mike and Aldona Rogers

I highly recommend this company for cabinet refinishing. Their experience and their professionalism was top quality. Within 3 days we had a brand new kitchen with custom finish, along with their experience came a price that we thought was too good to be true! We had 4 estimates and nobody came close to them. Thank you guys for our brand new kitchen.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
