"I truly felt that God led her to us. My wife felt comfortable with her from the beginning. I opened up to her myself, telling her our story. Evangelist Sinkfield listened attentively and shared a little herself. Before I knew it she was giving counsel and I was comfortable with her. She had prepared personal vows for us. We had a great experience with Evangelist Sinkfield and she would be highly recommend. Daniel & Tammy Crousby II"

"My son's outdoor ceremony was beautiful and meaningful. Being Catholic I was not sure what the ceremony would be like. The marriage ceremony had just the right amount of humor, love spirituality and personal touch. The family vows with my daughter in law's son was special and meaningful. Thankyou for helping to make their special day meaningful and beautiful. The simplicity, punctuality, and attention to detail made for an excellent experience."

"Pastor David Russell officiated at our recent wedding in Innsbrook, Missouri. Upon originally meeting with him we knew he would do a great job. Prior to the wedding the communication was great and he included our grandsons in the wedding party. He set a very warm, cordial atmosphere for our wedding, family and friends joining us for the reception and offering the blessing. He would be highly recommended by Jerry and Roberta Simpson."

"Cris is exceptional in every category listed above. He did a wonderful job with the ceremony for our wedding. He was courteous, professional and very prompt at returning all messages including the one I sent the day before our wedding at 11:30p.m. He was very easy going and after our first meeting I knew that I had made the right choice in selecting him as our officiant for our ceremony. He guided us through everything from beginning to end and I had a certified marriage certificate waiting in my mail box when I returned from my honeymoon. He listened to what we wanted and didn't want in a ceremony and was willing to change anything and everything that I did not feel quite right about. I can't reiterate enough how often he made sure everything was what we wanted from how he was dressed, whether we wanted him at the rehearsal to the choices of readings and vows. We were completely satisfied with Cris and would highly recommend him to anyone we know that is getting married."

"Jim was a fantastic officiant. He's very personable and kind. His delivery has just a hint of unique flare as to not throw off the objective while still delivering a differentiated feeling vow renewal. Would definitely recommend to a friend"

"Rick was great! We had a friend who was going to officiate our wedding and they cancelled 2 weeks before our wedding so I found Rick (Weddings R Me), he was quick to respond and answered all of my questions. He was professional, dressed nice, flexible, and he gave a wonderful service that was unique and really fit us even though he had only talked with me on the phone. I was nervous about having someone I had never met officiate our wedding but he did a phenomenal job! The groom and I were very pleased with Rick!!!"

"My husband and I were lucky enough to know Pastor Melrick as our friend before we asked him to officiate our wedding. He gave us the most heartfelt, tender, and personalized wedding ceremony. All of our family and friends still remark to us, now a year later, how amazing he was and how wonderful his words were on our special day. Pastor Melrick was available to answer any of our questions and also help counsel us before our marriage. We would definitely highly recommend Pastor Melrick to future couples for their wedding ceremony. Lindsay & Patrick 2017"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
