We had a very positive experience from start to finish. Alumni Builders, Dan and his staff were very pleasant to work with. They listened and were very understanding to our needs. Dan worked very closely with us to explain the whole process, listened to our desires, provided needed feedback and made our first home addition build less stressful. He was involved in all aspects of the project to make sure our desired vision became reality. Alumni Builders has a very great team of professionals. We would use/recommend them for any future projects. Thank you again for all your hard work and making our dream house. Anderson family.

Complete kitchen remodel. I am very happy with my new kitchen. I have only good comments about the crew working in my house. They were totally professional and had several great ideas and suggestions along the way. They were very particular and always went the extra mile to do the job right. The crew finished their work right on schedule. Tom was very good to work with during the design phase. I had a very small kitchen and his ideas allowed me to get the maximum benefit out of the space. A couple of items were being customized for my kitchen and they did get lost in the shuffle for awhile; causing a delay in the completion of the total job. Everyone who was familiar with my old kitchen has been totally amazed with the changes. I would certainly recommend TCN for anyone considering a kitchen remodel.

He was very kindly when it was time to pick the colors to paint my house; I was not sure what I wanted, but with his knowledge, we came to a great decisions. He was fast, but very professional doing his job. I also had some minor repairs to do at home; which I didn't had the time to do, and he did it for us. I can't be more grateful with his job. Thanks to Thumbtack, I found a great company to help me, with all my home improvements.

John came to my home to fill in a huge hole in my wall (used for a TV) move electrical and put specific and custom glass shelves up. My mom actually recommended him because he actually built a closet in her home. First of all John was extremely friendly and came up with different ideas for the space. He also came early and stayed late to finish the job. He was dependable and called when he would maybe be 2-3 minutes late. The space looks awesome and my husband and I were so happy! I would definitely recommend John to do any work in your home...he is excellent and extremely professional. Please email me if you have any questions.

David was a huge assest in partnering with me, building a custom home of my dreams. We built a 3400 sq. ft. ranch home in 2007 - Monee, IL with numerous upgrades. The project lasted about 8 months, would have been done sooner if it wasn't for weather delays. David kept the project on time and impressed me with his organization and total home building knowledge that I needed to finish on time and on budget. True testament to my home and David's skills are that after 8 years of living in my home, I still look forward going home everyday to a quality built home that has total usable living area! My experience with David was A+ with one word to define, professional. William Kosic

We have been customers of Stade Construction for years. He built our home 21 years ago. 8 years ago we had him add a 4 Seasons sunroom, and 3 years ago we had him take down our wooden wrap around porch and make it cement. We had him put up new garage doors last year. Whenever we need work done on or around our home we always return to Stade Construction. We know it will be done well. We do NOT HESITATE to recommend him for construction work. As you can see from our pattern....we are FOREVER customers!

My experience with Thomas McNichols was very pleasant. He helped me with the design of my remodeling project with regard to the layout and products. In 2008 I hired Thomas McNichols to remodel my home. I had an unfinished attic which I was now going to finish and add a dormer to. I had them build me two bedrooms, a walk in closet, bathroom, linen closet and 3 storage closets. Central air was also added to my second floor. Before the second floor could be complete, my existing stairways to my attic and basement had to be taken out and rerouted. Brand new stairs were built to my seond floor and basement. Once that project was done, I had my kitchen completely remodeled. It was a complete gut job and they also opened up a back porch to enlarge the kitchen. While the kitchen renovation was going on, new siding was being put on my whole house and new front stairs were built. The entire house renovation took 4 1/2 months to complete. In 2009 I hired Thomas McNichols again to put new siding on my garage and pour a new patio in my backyard. In 2013 I again hired Thomas McNichols to gut and remodel a first floor bathroom which took 3 weeks to complete. At that time, they also opened up a first floor bedroom off my kitchen and converted it to a family room. That job took 10 days to complete. I could not have been more pleased with the work that Thomas Builders & Construction Co. performed at my house. I was very pleased with the outcome. My house is beautiful. This company is very professional, they were always on time, they cleaned up after themselves every day and never left me a mess, and every step of the construction was explained to me along the way. There were no surprises, they were very patient with me and very reasonable in their rates. The quality of the work was outstanding. I recommend Thomas McNichols to everyone I know.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
