Highly recommend Harrison Residential, from the deck plan to the final product Russ and his team went beyond my expectations. Neighbors are still stopping by to look at it many days later.

I hired Jeff after a home inspection while selling my home. I needed to fix a few things I didn't even know needed fixing. This included changing the main water valve under the house to working in the attic venting the bathroom fan. I also had some exterior eaves that need replacement. Jeff know how to handle all the jobs. He did a great job addressing everything. He is very knowledgeable when I comes to home construction. I plan on calling Jeff when I move to my new home for any work needed.

I am very happy with Jerry's service. Jerry came to my house on time. He listened to my house plans, and answered my questions. He was also very helpful suggesting alternatives. I needed my house drawing quick, and Jerry delivered. The cost is super reasonable compared to other architects I received quotes from. It was Labor Day weekend, and he came on Labor Day afternoon to hand deliver the drawings. He even provided extra copies. I submitted the plans to city of evanston, and the city had no questions. Even after Jerry already delivered the plans, I called him to ask if he can edit the plans, and he answered my texts early in the morning. He provided advice and was willing to edit the plans. I got an email today from the city that the plans have been approved. His work is fast and exactly what I asked for and more, the only thing that I hope he can improve on is his slight "attitude". He asked me a question and I guess my answer was too long and he said "just answer yes or no". I did not like that at all. That is why I took 1 star. I'm not a child so I'd like to be respected equally as an adult hiring a professional. Other than that, I highly recommend him.

Well, of course the project ended up being way more work than I thought due to my house being old and "unique." Joe was honest about what needed to happen and I still feel that the price was fair for the amount of work he did. He took the time to do my project safely and efficiently. He's also a really nice guy, so that's a bonus. My yoga hammock is rigged and ready! Thanks, Joe!

Brian was a true professional! He helped me design a deck for my client and made very professional drawings that the village required. He took our ideas and with only a couple small adjustments we had all the necessary drawings ready for the building department. He will be my go to architect for all my future projects. Thanks Brian for the great service!

Luis built a playroom above our garage starting from scratch. He completed the job in under 2 weeks and it looks absolutely amazing for a very reasonable price. There are many small touches Luis put into the build like adding tiny ridges to the shelves in addition to making it look like it was built as part of the original house. This included crown molding around the windows, door, and along the base. Luis also has a good eye for design and colors and he made multiple suggestions which we adopted without being pushy. We've also used Luis for multiple painting jobs and he and his crew are extremely quick, friendly, and do a very good job. Given the quality of the work, time frame, and value of services - we plan to use Luis again for our home improvement needs.

Chris designed our house and pole barn attachment. He has been readily available throughout the entire processes answering all our questions thoroughly. He has been patient with my husband and I as we tried to make mutual decisions. He has also been in contact with us during the building process. The house and pole barn aren't finished yet but I'm excited to see the final product.

My fiance & I have lived in a little old Cape Cod on Chicago's Northwest Side for 11 years. We had outgrown our house & were trying to decide whether to move or do something with the existing house. We had been out looking at many houses, but just couldn't find something that beat our current location. We also had looked over many house plans & couldn't find something to fit our narrow lot. We chose to consult with an Architect to see what the possibilites would be to add on & rework our existing space. We hired Arlene Warda based on pictures of her work that we had seen. Having a vintage Cape Cod we knew she was the right choice with her experience in transforming little old houses into spectacular living spaces. What Arlene came up with based on our preferences was a transformation of the existing house into a French Country Cottage. Arlene was very knowledgable of zoning regulations in our area & was able to come up with a design that met our needs functionally as well as being aesthetically pleasing. Her attention to detail was outstanding. My fiance had specific materials in mind for the project & she was able to answer all of our questions or put us in touch with contractors who could. Arlene is capable in all aspects of the design process from the new exterior all the way down to helping with interior selections. The design that she came up with was completely custom to fit our lifestyle & needs. Ultimately we decided to move so that we could have more land rather than go through with the construction project & we are definately keeping Arlene Warda in mind for any future housing projects. It was a great experience to see what the possibilities would have been for a renovation.

Neri Architects did a fabulous job designing an addition to our house. They did come out to the site few times and we held few design sessions in their office to ensure every design detail was addressed and agreed on - this resulted in a smooth execution of the project with virtually no changes. The Neri team was very easy to work with and delivered an outstanding design that literally turns heads of people walking or driving by. We are very happy and highly recommend the Neri Architects.

Fantastic job for a third of the cost of the competition. I met with Adam Wallen in person to show him the project and in one week he was back with final prints ready to be submitted to the city. He was willing to make any necessary changes if the city required any at no additional costs. I will most definitely use him for future projects and be recommending him to all my family and friends. Thanks Adam for the great work

Lauren was great through our entire house renovation. I didn't comment on value as she worked with a renovation company at the time which included her services. She is thorough, prompt, professional, and her work is outstanding. There were many changes and she responded immediately with options. At a time which can be very stressful dealing with Lauren mitigated the stress. The picture below is our before photo. That is the entire kitchen. For reference the island is 2' x 4'. The pictures on Lauren's website of the kitchen with white cabinets and grey walls is mine. The second photo is the opposite side of the kitchen today.

We first worked with Dan 15 years ago, when he designed a beautiful new stairway connecting two apartments in New York. We couldn't have been happier. So when it was time to do a major renovation to our rundown 100-year-old farmhouse, we gave the project to Dan again. His plans for the project are smart and innovative, and respected our edict to maintain the essential farmhouse character of the home while also making it as "green" as possible. He has combined some rooms, increased access to others, and opened up the back of the house. We plan to begin the project this winter and can't wait to move into the newly conceived place.

Overall I would say that our experience with Thom was great! His pricing is really reasonable compared to others out there and at the start of the process he really sits with you to work everything out. He came to our house multiple times to go over plans and pointed us in the right direction when we were getting overzealous.. Getting permits is always hard--and that took longer than expected for a small project like ours. I wasn't thrilled with the fact that his expediter hadn't realized that the city guy assigned to approving our permits had been fired which was the big hangup. (How did I find that out and he/she not?). There have been some very minor flaws in the plans as we've gone through the building process--which I am sure would have been corrected had we brought them to his attention. In the long run we had a great experience and would recommend him to anyone that wants someone to get the job done without the snobbery and intimidation of some of the other teams out there.

Project: Addition to our house Lilija did a great job of listening to our needs and provided us with a solid architectural design; most of the contractors were amazed with the completeness of her drawings. She also developed several innovative lighting and storage solutions for our project. Lilija understands the nuts and bolts of local codes and zoning requirements. Working with her was a very pleasant experience. She is very detail focused and was quick to respond to all of our questions/concerns.

My wife and I have recently finished a 5 month long renovation of our home. John Zachar, however was with us for the long 4 years of brainstorming, planning and procrastinating that proceeded that (I'm sure we were the most indecisive clients he has ever worked with). John's patience and understanding cannot be overstated. More important, however, was his creativity and depth of knowledge regarding all aspects of our project. He didn't merely draw a functional house. He thoughtfully helped us create our home. I was constantly impressed with his ceaseless commitment to giving us the most beautiful and efficient solutions to all our various requests. Then, after we were finally ready, he helped us choose a contractor, obtain permits and followed the process every step of the way. If you have ever dealt with the chaos that is home renovation you know how valuable it was to have someone with his incredible expertise to be our advocate. I wholeheartedly recommend John's services to anybody thinking of hiring him,.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
