We hired Glam House Staging to stage our vacant house. They came over to look at the property and had the house staged within a couple of days. They did an amazing job bringing in furniture, rugs, pictures, display pieces to completly transform the interior of the house. Thanks for a job well done!

Carol did an excellent job staging our single family home. She truly has a keen eye for interior design. When you combine that with her fair pricing, fast turn-around, and professional team, it's hard to imagine a company that can offer the same value as Carol Brody.

Caryn is perfect! My parents worked with an interior designer when I was growing up, and I remember she would always push really fancy expensive furniture on them, so I was hesitant to hire someone when we bought our new home. Caryn understands that we are DIY people, and works with that, and our budget, in mind. She doesn't overcharge, and we got SO much done in our one-hour consult with her. She picked out paint colors for the whole house and I LOVE them. I would have spend hours agonizing over it had I picked them out myself. Worth every penny! I can't wait to use her over the years to design our home!

I hired Variant to help me with branding and the interior remodel of my coffee shop. It was my first time hiring an interior designer so I wasn't sure what to expect but they were great to work with and the renovation looks beautiful. I could not have asked for a better experience or outcome. I would refer them to anyone looking to renovate their business or home.

It is impossible to write down all the work Homemade Design has done so far. They have gone above and beyond helping me with design choices. Their response time is super fast and even though they are not local - I always feel like they are standing behind me ready to help me any time I have questions. They will work with your budget and give you tips and tricks from the "design world". I highly recommend this company - you will not regret. - Rita

Lidia is great to work with. She has done the majority of decorating and furniture suggestions/purchases for Townhouse. The best part is that she was able to get us a great discount on furnishings and decorating pieces. She was able to understand what look I was going for and the colors I liked. She coordinated all of the contractors that I needed for the job and took care of everything else. Even when I couldn’t be home for a job, she was there to direct everything and make sure things went as planned. Throughout each step of the design process, she presented excellent options that were always within our budget. She has excellent sense of color and pattern, and she understands how to design spaces. Each of her subcontractors was outstanding and added to the success of our design. We are looking forward to our next project with her.

Our experience with Lauren Marshall Interiors was terrific. We worked with Lauren on the renovation (gut job) of a bathroom in our 100 year old home. Because the size of the bathroom is small, it was important to choose appropriate materials and fixtures that modernized the bathroom without compromising the integrity of an older home. Lauren was able to design the space and work within our budget to achieve those two objectives. She provided great visualizations and walked us through the project. Although she had a vision, she was receptive to my input. She delivered all design specifications on time and within budget. She did not rush me to make decisions and gave me lots of options for materials. Lauren communicated well and often to ensure the project was progressing as planned. Additionally, Lauren was punctual to all meetings both at our home and showrooms. Lauren is a wonderful designer with a terrific eye for detail. I highly recommend Lauren Marshall Interiors for any and all home projects, whether a gut kitchen or bathroom job, or giving a room a fresh new look.

Excellent service, upfront and honest off the bat. We were looking for an interior designer to really alleviate the hassle of moving into a new home. We were low on time and wanted someone who would manage a project from start to finish. David's offer was to do a free consultation in home with a full walk through free of charge, and his website laid out how the entire process will work so it was 100% up front. From a project managers perspective, that's perfect. We are looking forward to working with David on creating our home and will leave a post review of how things went. Expecting things to go really well.

I hired Angela from Elegance by Design as my interior designer and it was a great decision. Angela is not only a designer but can be your general contractor or you can use your own contractor and hire her as a designer and she can also project manage your contractor so you aren’t stuck dealing with every detail. She’s very thorough and passionate about design. As a homeowner you’re emotionally tied to certain things or how you think things should be, however she take a holistic design approach and looks at the space you want to design and gives you ideas of what things can look like based on your style and what would appeal to others if you were to ever sell in the future. She’s detailed oriented and a perfectionist. She gave me an idea to cut a piece of drywall in the bathroom that added minimal cost but added much more return to the value of my bathroom having a fireplace which you usually don’t see in homes which I’ll get back if I sell this home. She also helps you pick up material and has saved me money and chosen the right material like lights and tile which I was going to pay a lot more for. Never using a designer I didn’t know what to expect and now having one I know that any remodeling I will do I will use a designer more specifically Angela from Elegance by Design.

We used Keith and Innovative Remodeling & Structure for some millwork (board and batten style) in our entrance way. He re-constructed our columns in the great room to a modern farmhouse look. We love it! Great craftsmanship. He worked with us on the design to give us the look we wanted that flowed with the rest of the house. We were so happy with the work, that we added on a fireplace re-design. We resurfaced the dated brick with a more current gray stone. He rebuilt the mantle and created a shiplap trim design above the fireplace. We'll definitely use Keith again.

Kim has a great eye for design, color and style. Her inventory feels & looks high end. She goes the extra mile to assure the presentation is perfect - often coming back the next day with accessories/artwork. Kim works very hard to ensure a smooth process from start to finish. When you utilize her service, your property will sell for more $'s in a shorter time - that is a fact. Thanks Kim for all you do to make my business more successful. I lost one parent and downsized the other (long divorced) and had decided to stay in my parents home. Fern helped me to divest myself of 3 homes worth of furniture and "stuff", choose what to keep, and transformed the house into a whole new place reflecting my tastes (which she also helped me to distill). What impresses people who know me, was the (seemingly) effortless result of a few sentimental antiques showcased amid more modern and uncluttered furniture. One friend's comment, "It is absolutely Kimberlee!" What impressed me, was how quickly Fern absorbed my likes and dislikes, understanding my taste better than I imagined. She convinced me that I would love a dark purple accent wall in the living room, and after all my arguing, she was absolutely correct. Fern is empathetic, creative, and dependable, all huge benefits in a designer/decorator. She makes the collaboration of designer and client virtually stress-free, especially amazing considering this client who did not have well formed tastes... I might like it, not sure, but I like it this way, too, and this one is really comfortable as well, etc. Lakeside Interiors is enthusiastically endorsed for small projects like paint colors, to full overhauls.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
