The movers were professional. They got to my place on-time but it took them sometime to figure out where the loading dock was located even though I had sent an email to their company with specific instructions. Even with delayed start, they were able to move all of my furniture out of my place just under 2 hours, which is very impressive. Their moving equipment (trucks) is very old and i also saw the driver scrape the truck twice against the other moving truck and rail guard and it seemed like one of the drivers was not used to driving big uHaul truck. They did cover my furniture with cloths and made sure it was secure. All in all, for the price they are charging they did a fantastic job and there were no major dings to my property.

Very reasonable pricing. Time starts when they arrive at my home and finishes when they are done unloading everything at the moving to location. Truck charge is a flat fee independent of distance and fuel is included. Company was very punctual and responsive. Very hard working movers. Moving is a tough job to do.

Very professional movers! Arrived 5 minutes before the scheduled time and worked hard to make sure everything was right. They had to move my couch down a narrow set of stairs and bends. They were very patient and professional the entire time. I would hire them again if I need to.

Movers were a little late but we’re in touch as soon as they knew and kept up to date as to Schedule. Movers were very careful of flooring and furniture and moved our vintage generation piano from our home to our sons with Care. We were refer motion transports to others and will be using their services in the future.

Awesome job. Hands down will hire Melvin and his team for moving. A case of Underpromise and over delivered. Three guys came in for the two movers quote and completed the job. They came prepared with dolly, blankets and wrap and other tools. Although I used my own blankets for the job.

These guys were great. First off, they were super accommodating when I had to change the move time the very day of the scheduled move. Two guys moved our apartment in 2 hours, including disassembling and reassembling our bed. They helped us figure out the best way to configure our living room which was a little nutty I must admit. And, this is a big one, they managed to get our big couch out of the old apartment and into the new apartment without any damage to the couch or the building, which the previous movers couldn't pull off (and there were 3 of them). Friendly, communicative, helpful, accommodating. I totally recommend these guys. I think, though, that they should get a dolly just to make things a little easier on themselves. :)

The move itself went really smooth. The 4 movers worked really quick moving a townhouse in Brookfield to a house in Homer Glen in 3 hours. My one complaint would be the charges for tape and other materials I thought were included in the packing materials portion of the quote. They excessively wrapped every last item which used a ton of tape and boxes we didn't need, which added a lot to the cost. But still this was a fair price for the move and a good job.

I could not be more pleased than I am with Alliance Movers! I had to call to ask for a bigger truck and an additional person for the move due to the fact that there was more items than I had realized! The 3-Movers arrived about an hour early for the move on Saturday, they looked at the job in the 3-areas involved and really got into it! They started in the Basement and were flying up the stairs with all of the box's and began loading into the truck! They even moved additional items out of the Basement for me and placed them into the Driveway! Next they went into the Garage and emptied all of the items involved including additional items! Lastly, they went back into the House and very carefully wrapped all of the Furniture and moved it into the truck! I could not believe it, they got everything into this 25' Truck all very neatly and carefully and without damage! Unbelievable! They drove to the new House and immediately began to unload the Truck! They were directed by my Wife and Sister were to put all of the items as they came off of the Truck without question! Everything was unwrapped and placed without damage! They totally cleaned up the job site and had the entire job done in 5-hours! They were then going to another job-site for another move that afternoon! I was totally impressed with the 3-men from Alliance! They were extremely courteous and very professional! They worked very well together and were a Great team! The Move went a lot better that I initially thought and it all went well and largely due to Alliance Movers!! It was a pleasing experience and I would highly recommend Alliance Movers to anyone who is looking for a Great Company to work with!!!!! Thank You!

The 2 moving men that showed up were great. They called on their way so we had a hard start time and had little discussion - straight to work. They picked up quickly on the system I wanted to use to move in furniture and were moving ahead of me quickly. They did little extras that were not asked of them which I appreciate. The movers were also extremely polite and took great care not to damage the furniture or the house. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Mobile Services Moving Assembly Delivery. Kc

All of the above! Travis and Calvin were very professional as well as personable. As we all may know, moving can be tedious and a nightmare if you don't have the right movers; these guys made the experience quite the opposite. I'd recommend them time and time again!

After a disappointing experience with a previous mover, I am pleased to state the experience with J C Movers was exceptional. My item was outside the metro Chicago area but the moving company agreed to my request. They were punctual, professional, and contacted me throughout the process. Highly recommend and would use again.

Nice movers, on time, efficient, worked there butts off on one of the hottest days of the summer, up and down multiple flights of stairs for 2.5 hours and never once complained and or asked for a break. I had to remind them to take a break. Highly recommend their services if you have to move fast one a budget. The only thing they didn't offer were moving supplies and a truck.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
