Simply Trees did a great job trimming the giant old oak in our backyard. Their quote was fair and the service was friendly and no-nonsense. They were on site early and powered through until the job was completed. I appreciated the care they gave to clean up, especially to our neighbor’s back yard. I definitely plan to use them for future tree trimming needs.

Skaggs Tree Service did a fantastic job. They were kind enough to come out TWICE, first to give me a quote for trimming up three large evergreen trees, the again when I changed my mind and decided the trees needed to come down altogether. They were easy to work with and showed up early in the morning and got the job done in about 45 minutes. I was impressed at how quickly, methodically, and SAFELY this group worked. They even cleaned up all the trimmings and retrieved a few balls my daughter (and husband) had lost to the tops of the trees previously. They were very kind to work with and I will definitely be using them again when we are ready to tackle a few other projects. I would highly recommend Skaggs Tree Service!

Baumann Tree, LLC did work these last two days on our property, cutting down two Oak trees, trimming and dead wooding two Oak trees, trimming over-hanging neighbor's tree, etc. They cleaned up and removed all debris. The crew was courteous and polite, working very hard. They did an absolute excellent job! We will use them in the future, and will recommend them to friends and neighbors. It was a pleasure doing business with them. Herbert and Ann Murch South St. Louis County

Needed to find a lawn service company for my rental property after the gentleman that was cutting it flaked out. It had been four weeks so the yard was in bad shape. The LawnStarter process was very easy to setup and they quoted me a reasonable price. It was really nice to be able to take care of everything through the app. Happy to have found the service. They did the work when they said they would and the yard looked much better than it had.

To anyone looking to hire someone to take care of your garden and landscaping, Kathy Selz is the person to call. I only regret I didn't take before and after pictures of my landscaping because you would be able to see what a difference it makes when someone knows what they are doing. Kathy showed me the plants and bushes the deer are eating, bushes that were trimmed incorrectly and showed me I had probably a foot too much mulch. We made a plan to get everything the way it is suppose to be. Yesterday, Kathy and her crew came out and worked the plan. The mulch they dug out from the landscaping which had been accumulating for 20 years filled a truck and then some. I am so happy our "paths" have crossed and I look forward to a long relationship with Kathy and her company. She is a true professional that knows what she is doing.

We had 1 tree removed and 1 tree trimmed at our residence. The Envirogreen staff from start to finish was very helpful, informative and professional. The tree crew did an amazing job with our older large tree we had removed next to our home and power lines. We would recommend this company to anyone looking for tree service or even landscape work. We couldn't be more happy with our experience with Envirogreen.

Jim's prices are reasonable and they do a great job cutting and trimming. When I need some extra yard work done, i.e., leaf removal or spring clean up, they can accommodate and will even clean out my gutters when needed. My neighbors have asked who I use and have used them when on vacation. So I highly recommend this lawn care team.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
