Aldo recently worked on my home in Chicago. I contracted him to remodel my kitchen, including paint, refinishing my cabinets, and installing a tile back-splash behind the counter tops. It took Aldo and his team about a week and a half to complete the work which I found reasonable. I was quite pleased with the recommendations that were provided to me. I wasn't sure what design scheme I wanted to go with initially but Aldo was very helpful in that aspect and I loved the final outcome. The team made sure that I was completely satisfied with the work that they did and I appreciated that.

Josh made quick work of attaching handles to my kitchen and laundry room cabinets. Josh was friendly and did great work. He made sure work was done right and made a point to be sure to leave the rooms clean when done. Highly recommend him.

Ed did an excellent job. I love my kitchen remodel. I get so many compliments on my new backsplash. He had cabinets, dishwasher and counter tops installed quickly. Plus installed a new window, ceiling fan and doors. He even did some minor upgrades at no cost, like changing my outlets. Was veryour friendly and efficient. Already have plans for him to do more work, backsplash in my bathroom and flooring in basement.

What an amazing experience, having Matthew update our kitchen with new cabinets. He singlehandedly removed old cabinets and installed new cabinetry in 5 days. He was punctual, meticulous, honest, integral, well knowledgeable, and his fees were affordable. We would definitely request his services again, as well as recommend him. We saved approximately $2000 with his cabinet recommendations.

Repaired finish on kitchen cabinet door matching it nicely. It was not a time sensitive job but did require some patience waiting for him to complete. Very reasonable price. I would use him again.

Used TCN for new quartz countertop, reinstalling faucet into new under mount stainless steel sink. Seam in corner of the counter top is barely seen. I was told if I didn't point it out they would not have seen it. Tom called every person that worked on it throughout the time they were here. Already recommended him to a couple of people.

I could not be happier with the end result of the furniture refinishing project Don Burch did for me. At stake was a 100-year-old bed that could not be replaced. Don worked miracles in repairing extensive damage to the footrail, creating new pieces of woodwork and finishing that matched the original so perfectly, not even the original craftsman could be able to tell the difference! I found Don to be reliable, professional, and a true artist at what he does. We were so pleased with the results that we are working with Don on another project in the near future.

He is a former house inspector. This is an extremely valuable perspective when you consider making changes to your home. He is thoughtful and measured. He completed several extensive projects in my home: replacing wood flooring in my entranceway with tile, refacing my fireplace surround where he demolished existing large boulder stones and replaced with sleek flat tile and even suggested I lower the hearth to the floor for a more modern look. He shrunk the footprint of an oversized kitchen island that involved moving cabinetry and plumbing and preparing the base for a new top and he helped me redo my powder room and replaced my '80s mirrored cabinet fronts with custom stained wood. I am happy and very pleased with the work he has done on my home. He made a number of suggestions about how to maintain my home going forward. I appreciated this expertise.

I thankfully found Tommy 3 years ago when I was rehabbing my newly purchased house. He is not just the painter-- He is absolutely amazing! He is creative & full of wonderful ideas - on top of being fantastic at the work he does! He has painted the inside of my house, created copper faux ceilings, faux finishes in several rooms, and most recently painted the entire outside of my house - and helped me with the color choice!!! Everything turned out beautiful & I'm always getting compliments on how beautiful everything is!!He is my "go to" guy! The next things on my list are for him to re-do my kitchen cabinets (for which I will trust him when it comes to the color because I am not creative!!) and epoxy flooring for my 3 season room!

Highly, highly recommend.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

      Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

      • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
      • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
      • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
      • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

      How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
