I am a friendly and patient mentor and I know a lot about my profession and all its different musical styles. Listening to one of my students play a piece for me (and her family) when she has mastered it. I derive great satisfaction from helping my students to progress and improve.

My students really learn the joy of the piano performance because they choose what kind of music they want to play, of course I advice what music to play in case they are not sure. They feel and realize their improvement in each lesson and can showcase what they learnt in recitals that I organize twice a year in a very friendly, fun, and non competitive environment. After each recital we have a social snack time! Year after year my students realize how they are escalating in their level of artistry and technique of piano performance. The process of teaching my students the art of the piano performance. Every lesson there is something new to teach, something new to improve in my students. I also enjoy learning and improving as a piano teacher. Every lesson is an opportunity for me to become a better piano teacher as well.

I provide private flute and piano instruction to children age 4 through adult, ranging from beginner to intermediate levels. My goal in teaching private lessons is to create a positive atmosphere that encourages the student to grow in their music knowledge, technique, skill and musicality. I focus on using the student's strengths to help improve areas of weakness. Lessons are taught in my home studio. During lessons, the student and I will go through assigned pieces and cover new level/age appropriate topics for their new assignments. As part of my classical style of teaching, I also make time for improvisation, ear training and sight reading skills - important skills that when mastered, make the music experience much more fulfilling and enjoyable. I host recitals two times a year, in March and November. All students are encouraged to participate. We work on performance preparation and performance skills.

I have been told by many parents that what sets me apart (as a piano teacher) is that I understand the process of teaching and learning because I am able to combine my 27 years of classroom teaching experience with my many years of playing and teaching the piano. Most piano teachers do not have the training or experience that comes with teaching in a classroom for so many years along with teaching piano. Performing on the piano and teaching the piano effectively are two very different things. I understand how people learn and how the mind works. I enjoy the daily interaction I have with my students at their lessons and those "ah-ha" moments when I am able to visibly experience my students' joy as they react emotionally to a piece they are playing. That moment is always filled with a sense of accomplishment and deep satisfaction for both of us.

I pull lesson material from an extremely broad scope of experiences and implement them into the piano lessons to help create a well-rounded musician as well as a well-rounded person. Being able to find the point of inspiration for a student is a skill I pride myself in. Once that point is found then all of the doors are opened to the student. I also provide CD rentals to my students one to two times a month to help work their ears! Many students don't realize how much they may love Franz Liszt until they hear a great recording of his works! My personal life revolves around classical piano as well, I practice as often as I possibly can and read books on music theory and the lives of composers as well as reading orchestral scores before bed. I have an undying passion for music that I strive to share with the community! Seeing the "Aha" moment in a lesson is just incredible. I will never tire of seeing this happen. The moment they realize their thumb can play two different keys in one song is such a strong symbol to what piano is. The simplistic nature of an idea can boggle the mind for days and even years when on a larger scale. The simple Bach C major prelude from book one of the Well Tempered Clavier is a great example of this. Any intermediate student will have the opportunity to play this work and play it quite well, but to this day I do not think I have found all of the hidden gems in that short 2 page simple piece. The next level is when the students connect their emotions to the piano; once this happens, there is no stopping them! This becomes especially apparent early on in improvising. Improvisation comes from the subconscious and will let out emotions and thoughts you may not have known were stewing around up in your head! The latter is truly heartwarming.

I teach jazz and classical piano at my studio in Evanston. I work with all ages, and specialize in working with adults and teenagers. As a performer, I have been active on the Chicago jazz scene for over 25 years, and have performed at Chicago's major jazz clubs including the Jazz Showcase, Andy's, the Green Mill, and many others. I am on the music faculty of the Chicago Academy for the Arts, a private high school in Chicago, and am also on the staff of the Boocoo Cultural Center in Evanston, where I host a Jazz Jam Session on the third Sunday of every month. This Jam Session provides an opportunity for my students to play with professional musicians in a relaxed setting for an appreciative audience. Every teacher has different teaching approach and philosophy and I would say every music teacher that I met is trying their best to help their students to learn and develop as a musician and a well-rounded person. I love teaching and sharing with my students. I enjoy every moment of my time with my students and I love to help them to gain interest in music and art and enjoy playing music. In my lessons, I don't just give my students instructions on how to play and listen, but also help them to think and solve problems. I help my students to become independent in music playing and learning so they can keep playing music for the rest of their lives with or without a teacher. I love meeting people and sharing my passion, knowledge and experience with them. I love music, I love teaching, I love children, I love other music lovers so being able to be a full time music teacher and to have a positive influence on my students is one of the best things that ever happened to me. Thanks to all my teachers, employers and my parents. They taught me a lot and helped me a ton. Now it's time for me to do the same to the others.
