What a great job! We were lucky and were able to get everything done right away! They were quick, professional and did great work! We had to replace all the deck boards and railings on our deck and it was contracted and completely in under a week and it's beautiful! We are very pleased and will be hiring Hercules to do more work on our home in the near future!

We contacted Julie regarding ideas about painting and decorating our home. She came to meet us at a time convenient for us, looked at the house and gave several ideas that matched what we had in mind. She helped us pick through several color schemes, guiding us through the pros and cons of each one and giving us ideas on how and what accessories to add, to pull everything together perfectly. We were impressed at how Julie was able to understand what we needed and quickly came up with the right ideas. We look forward to working with Julie on continuing to decorate and upgrade our home.

Remodeled bathroom, He installed new drywall taped and mud. Installed New ceramic tile floor , installed cement board, laid the tile and grouted the floor and it looks beautiful. He also addressed some structural needs for the tub/shower and repaired. He was there when he said he would be. Careful with tools and supplies going in and out of the house( drop clothes, clean and neat about work space and protecting floors and surfaces. Fast and efficient excellent work. When I first acquired my condo, I knew I had a lot of work in store for me. As a first-time homeowner, and moreover a bachelor with a unique vision for his condo, I struggled to come up with a plan for how I would execute the radical transformation I needed to make. In the beginning, my condo was more fitting of an old couple’s abode of respite. However, I sought to transform it into a modern bachelor pad with a home theater presiding over it. I did my research and recruited 1816zenden to help re-design my home because I liked their website and their philosophy behind designing a home. I first met Roopa from 1816zenden at my building. She came over, did the necessary measurements and I told her of the various constraints I had in terms of the design. I wanted to have a large projection screen, front and center in my living room with a projector mounted in the bedroom. She was extremely understanding of my needs and listened to me although I felt like a madman speaking about what I was planning on doing with my condo. Shortly thereafter, Roopa e-mailed me her designs for my place and I was extremely pleased with the layout. She offered to help with the execution of the design and given the allotted budget, we struck a deal that she would take care of the more important parts of the project and I would complete the rest when I get the opportunity. She was able to find great deals for many of the important aspects of the project, most notably for redoing the granite countertops in my kitchen and bathroom. I’ve been living in my condo for the past 6 months now, and I am extremely pleased with how it turned out. I’ve had friends over and they have all been extremely impressed with the place. I would highly recommend Roopa for designing the layout of a home and executing the necessary design choices. I found her prices to be reasonable and I have the highest opinion of her as a professional. -A.S.

Designs from A to V installed new flooring in my condo a month ago, and I can't overemphasize how professional; skilled and -- most of all -- fast they are! I work from home, so being displaced while the floors were replaced was extremely important to me. They promised to finish the job in a week; and it was done in 7 days. I've *never* had that happen with a contractor. Their prices are reasonable, and their work really is fantastic. They exceeded my expectations and I would highly recommend them!

I hired Variant to help me with branding and the interior remodel of my coffee shop. It was my first time hiring an interior designer so I wasn't sure what to expect but they were great to work with and the renovation looks beautiful. I could not have asked for a better experience or outcome. I would refer them to anyone looking to renovate their business or home.

I had a 6 month project where we went from a 2 bedroom one bath bungalow to a 5 bed room 2 bath bungalow. I had someone on site working everyday. Luci kept me updated on all of the issues as well as guided me on decorating the place. Larry and the crew were a joy to work with. We had the normal amount of “surprises” and cost overruns for a project of this size, but Luci and Larry overcame everything that was thrown at them. I can not say enough good things about them.

We first worked with Renae for Christmas decorating for our restaurant. We received so many compliments on the decorations that we asked her for advice on how to improve the existing design. She gave us insightful feedback and recommendations that wouldn't cost a lot. All the changes were so positive that we used her to fully design our new restaurant dining room. She is very creative with ways to design very affordably and respected our budget.

Our experience with Lauren Marshall Interiors was terrific. We worked with Lauren on the renovation (gut job) of a bathroom in our 100 year old home. Because the size of the bathroom is small, it was important to choose appropriate materials and fixtures that modernized the bathroom without compromising the integrity of an older home. Lauren was able to design the space and work within our budget to achieve those two objectives. She provided great visualizations and walked us through the project. Although she had a vision, she was receptive to my input. She delivered all design specifications on time and within budget. She did not rush me to make decisions and gave me lots of options for materials. Lauren communicated well and often to ensure the project was progressing as planned. Additionally, Lauren was punctual to all meetings both at our home and showrooms. Lauren is a wonderful designer with a terrific eye for detail. I highly recommend Lauren Marshall Interiors for any and all home projects, whether a gut kitchen or bathroom job, or giving a room a fresh new look.

We needed to stage our house very quickly to move to the West Coast. After we scheduled our consultation. We were sent a detailed list of things and how the project will be managed. Within 5 days our house was decluterred and staged. We needed to have our furniture moved right away so Sophia had all our things organized with movers and had new furniture staged in the house. Our realtor just had to bring a photographer to get our house listed. Everything was done quickly and efficiently. We felt at ease with this stressful move and ended selling our house in 9 days! Thanks to Space mkr’s team Amazon style our house looked like a magazine home! We moved 2 weeks ago in our new house! We liked the design Sophia did at our old home so Much, she will be designing and planning the layout Of our new home. Our family had a positive experience and loved working with a fun and creative team! Thank you again!

My husband and I love working with James. We appreciate his professionalism, his candidness, his humor, and his amazing sense of style. We moved from our downtown Chicago high-rise to a home located in suburban Hinsdale. James has transformed our dated Georgian Colonial into a refined, stylish, and sophisticated house we are happy to entertain and reside in. We always trust his design choices and are amazed by his photographic memory with the details of our home. He furnished and stylized the décor throughout our entire house. Specifically, he selected furniture, lamps, light fixtures, rugs, paint colors, tile, wall décor, window treatments, and accessories for the Living Room, Dining Room, Family Room, Kitchen, Home Office, Master Bedroom, Foyer, Mudroom, Powder Room, Hallway Bath, and the Outdoor Pool Area.

Excellent service, upfront and honest off the bat. We were looking for an interior designer to really alleviate the hassle of moving into a new home. We were low on time and wanted someone who would manage a project from start to finish. David's offer was to do a free consultation in home with a full walk through free of charge, and his website laid out how the entire process will work so it was 100% up front. From a project managers perspective, that's perfect. We are looking forward to working with David on creating our home and will leave a post review of how things went. Expecting things to go really well.

I was planning an addition to my home. I had no clue as to how complicated it could be. Between permits, the zoning requirements and not to mention the contractor problems that could have occurred. I was referred to Illusione Design by a friend. He said they did a great job for him and know I know why. Mr. Quintero and his team lead me through the whole project with professional advise and a level of experience and professionalism I have not experienced in a long time. What I now know could have been a really trying situation, went off without a hitch. The plans were done in no time and as far as knowing your way around city hall and all the codes. These guys really blew my mind. So yes. if you're planning any type of project, I think you would be smart to give them a call. I'm sure you will be pleased with the services they provide.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
