Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do you move large pieces of furniture?

Moving large furniture can be done with help from the best movers in your area and careful planning. First, get an idea of how much the furniture weighs and how much each mover can manage. The next step is figuring out the path the furniture will take as it exits its point of origin and makes its way to its new home. Professional movers then use dollies, furniture protectors and personal safety gear for a safe, smooth move.

This the second time we have used Kennebrew Moving in 2020. This is an outstanding company that works hard and makes a real effort to see things from the clients perspective. Jeremy is a very detailed oriented individual who is determined to do the move right. I would have no reluctance to calling on Kennebrew Moving, if I ever need to move again.

Pick Up Movers is the best moving company I have ever hired. They transported my household for almost 700 miles with no problems whatsoever. Pierre was a wonderful help and Kenan was not only the hardest working crew member, but the friendliest as well. If I ever need to move again, there will only be one moving company I will call. Thank you all so much!

We will use them again for future needs. Very responsive during quoting/scheduling and on the day of the move. Thank you

Roy and his workers moved a piano from our basement to our first floor. They were prompt, professional, and courteous. Roy even took the time to wrap our piano in a protective covering so its lacquer wasn't damaged in the move. His rate was very reasonable as well. I highly recommend Roy to anyone looking for a professional mover.

On September 8th Randy from Steel men moving and more responded to an add i placed on thumbtack for a moving company within 50 miles and moving a pool table and making 2 stops was involved. After explaining the scope of the job,and selecting a move date of 9/11, Randy provided me with a very reasonable quote and I accepted. The day before my scheduled move date, Randy contacted me to inform me that the crew that was scheduled to move me was detained in Wisconsin due to an illness and they would not be available for my scheduled move on Friday morning and he asked if he could move me on Friday evening. I work on Friday evenings which is why I elected to be moved early Friday morning. Randy said they could move me that Saturday or Sunday and that didn't work for me either because I wasn't available. Randy said ok he would do whatever it took to get me moved on the scheduled date and time we agreed upon. An hour or two later Randy called me to let me know a crew would be there to move me and the foreman would call me to confirm everything within 15 minutes. 15 minutes later Phil contacted me and we went over the scope of the job and I made a change from 3 men to 4 which was an additional $36 per hour but I wanted to ensure the move would be complete before I went to work. The morning of the move I received a call from Phil at 7:30am informing me they were 15 minutes away, the schedule arrival time was 8:00am so they were early. I showed the team what had to be moved and they immediately started working at 8AM. By 10AM they had disassemble and wrapped my 3 slate pool table and loaded all my furniture and boxes into the truck. We arrived at the first stop which was a 40 minute drive and all my furniture and boxes for that stop was unloaded and brought up a 3 story walk up in 1 hour We headed to the 2nd stop which was 30 minutes away and they unloaded the pool table and dining room set in less than 10 minutes. When i tell you I did not have 1 thing broken, dented or scratched The entire nove took 5 1/2 hours. These guys were absolutely amazing. Prompt, professional, courteous. If you need some movers Steel men and more is the real deal. I will definitely keep them in my contact list.

Apex was absolutely the right choice. From the first contact until the end of the job they displayed absolute professionalism. The movers were on time, polite, caring about my belongings, not bothered in any way about any thing included in the job. The negotiated price was very fair. I don't plan to move again, but I will definitely tout Apex to anyone I know that is moving.

Kennebrew Moving was a poor experience in regards to the explanation of contracted cost. I will give credit they were hardworking, punctual and overall professional. They were not big on wrapping furniture, when needed, you have to asked for that. Also I had minor damage to my new walls.... but because the furniture was very heavy and there were stairs , I let it go, BUT THIS WAS an 3 person move. At times, I assisted and a friend to help navigate stairs and other difficult move situations. Also, the marble top to my dresser was dropped ( an end hitting the ground) and luckily it didn't break...Two people should have been carrying it. My issues was with contracted cost. My initial cost for 2hrs with Three movers was $685.00. Upon arrival, only two movers showed up. My move was a three person move without a doubt. I paid for assemble and dissemble, $120.00 ( which counts toward your allotted time FYI). I would suggest you handle that yourself or make sure you have THE THIRD person as part of the crew present. The move ended up being 4hrs to complete. So I owed for another two hours, not an issues but the owner tried to over charge me. The initial two hr quote was $120 per hr for three movers ( otherwise $75.00 per hr for two movers) due to the crew being smaller, I should have been credited $90.00 for the 2hrs ( $120- $75= $45 x 2hrs = $90.00) for the first two hrs to compensate me for the third mover not being there. The $90 would have cover a third hr with $15.00 left over to go toward the 4th hr which would leave a balance of $60.00 for the fourth hour. Upon completion he charged me $75.00 which I immediately paid. Which means I had $15.00 credit!!! But he was hauling old furniture away for me for $80.00 which meant the $15.00 would go toward that and I would have a balance $65.00. He tried to charge me an additional $155.00 and his explanation did not add up and after I ended he conversation , I will admit rudely, He called me back with major attitude telling me HE WAS TRYING TO SAVE ME MONEY??. I refused to pay the amount he was asking for and the owner in turn brought back the furniture. So, in essence I gave the movers 15.00 tip..lol.. My suggestion if you decide to use this company, make sure you revisit the contract at the beginning of the move to clarify all cost, your expectation and hourly rates. Also, if you are expecting three movers, confirm before the move that the contracted labor will be available.

These guys are very good. The price is right, Chris is very responsive when you have questions, and the movers are professional. When challenges come up (limited parking for the truck, large items that are difficult to get through the doors, etc.), the guys don't complain and make you feel like it won't be a problem. We moved my 2 bedroom apartment to a single family home an hour and a half away in just about 6 hours. I've had three other movers before, and IVM are definitely the best. I highly recommend them.

Thank you so much for disassembling my treadmill and moving it down the stairs to my garage. I truly appreciate you guys made an exception that my move was not a 2 hour minimum. Exact words from nice guy I spoke to, “people are going through hard time right now so we will make an exception with the 2 hour moving minimum.” So nice I couldn’t believe it. Right from the start I spoke to you guys, very nice and professional and you could tell these guys truly cared about people and not just money. They responded to me fast, came out the next day, and the 2 moving guys were super friendly, professional, and respectful. I would highly recommend this company, refer them to others, and use them in the future.

I swore I'd never hire movers again after I got royally screwed by a company when I lived in the city. I spoke to several different companies and I could tell right away Chris was a sincere person. I was still hesitant to hire movers but I reluctantly hired Chris. Let me tell you it was an amazing experience!! I was on a strict budget so I only had a set amount of time that I could use them. Let me tell you, these guys never stopped moving from arrival to departure!! I've already referred 5 people to them. Anytime I move I can promise you I'm only making 1 phone call!! Right to Chris!! Thank you for making this such an amazing experience!

Is it possible to give zero stars? These are not professionals. They were supposed to move me from a 4 bedroom house. They brought a small u haul truck and 2 men but was only 1.5 manpower. They caused damages to both homes. Basically, they did not bring the labor needed for the job and are charging me for their amateurish and unprofessional work. Kameron then lied that he spoke to me about damages when he didn’t. Simply, use the professionals and stay away from this mover. They will charge you for moving slow, tear up your stuff and add fees that they did not discuss with you prior to hiring them. I have used A lot of professionals on Thumbtack, but this is the first time I have had such mediocre and gross negligent service!!!!

Moving has been a process. We actually booked and rescheduled with IVM at least 3 times because our closing wasn't the smoothest process and our work schedules kept conflicting with the times Chris had available. When were finally ready to move we got scheduled and the service more than exceeded our expectations. The movers showed up 30 minutes early which was great. They got everything loaded with ease despite the mess we left and unloaded at our new home just as fast. The guys were very efficient and they also didn't mind the help from our 9 year old nephew, who we thought would be more in the way. They were even willing to help with the assembly of our brand new crib but it would have required the use of power tools that they didn't have. We will definitely use them again and would recommend them to any one in need of movers. The price was more than reasonable and the service was excellent. Thanks so much!

We were in need of some help moving furniture and boxes into a POD storage unit, and were lucky enough to find super friendly Travis, and sweet & polite Malcolm to help us. They did an excellent job of wrapping everything thoroughly, and expertly loading up the POD. I even overheard one of my family members saying "Ain't nothing in there gonna be shifting around!" Very pleased with Athletic Movers and would definitely recommend and hire them again.
