I hired mark Knowles on thumbtack to fix a jarred lazy Susan corner cabinet. The cabinets are from the 70s, but still in great shape, except that one mechanism for that one cabinet. Parts were hard to find, but Mark went out of his way to find the right part, at a very reasonable price. He, in turn, supported a self employed, small business vendor. When he received the part, he called me immediately to set an appointment for the install. Mark was on time as promised, was personable, and very experienced with the repair that was done in a matter of minutes. I was thrilled to be able to use the cabinet again. Thank you, Mark. I would highly recommend you to anyone and hire you again for future needs.

Eddie has done a great job. He has been wildly responsive to concerns, and the end result looks great. He laid tile, built a custom cabinet in a tricky location, and then trimmed out my cabinets to look like they were customized all along. We came up with innovative solutions for the cabinet above my refrigerator, so the new, taller fridge fit AND my cabinet doors open freely. It is a brilliant solution you'll have to ask him about.

Josh made quick work of attaching handles to my kitchen and laundry room cabinets. Josh was friendly and did great work. He made sure work was done right and made a point to be sure to leave the rooms clean when done. Highly recommend him.

Dan worked very hard to understand our needs and get things exactly right. His customer service was incredible! When the project was completed we were unhappy with one of our design choices for cabinet doors. He replaced them with no issues. (This was our error, not his.) He was a little slower than anticipated but kept us fully informed. I highly recommend Dan and DP Sheetz Designs!

Mark is an expert cabinet painter who produced an excellent final product. Exceeded both time and cost estimates, but still saved me a great deal of money and inconvenience as compared with installing new cabinets.

Ed did an excellent job. I love my kitchen remodel. I get so many compliments on my new backsplash. He had cabinets, dishwasher and counter tops installed quickly. Plus installed a new window, ceiling fan and doors. He even did some minor upgrades at no cost, like changing my outlets. Was veryour friendly and efficient. Already have plans for him to do more work, backsplash in my bathroom and flooring in basement.

Tom was very prompt in getting me quotes on various different cabinets and styles, as well as a time frame, when the project could begin. Elise gave a great computer print of the kitchen layout and measurements, and also brought an outside perspective to the project. They had a lot of other pictures of kitchens they have completed in the past to give you an idea of the workmanship and quality they provide. Everything was done in a clean and professional manner. Dave and Frank did a fantastic job on the construction end. Very pleased with our results, would recommend giving them an opportunity to help with any project you are considering.

We are extremely happy with the new hardwood floors, new trim, and kitchen cabinets, Neil installed for us. They look great, he took the time to finish them so they really looked nice, and I learned some new methods to make the rest of the house higher quality. He brought in other tradesmen, as needed, but I was amazed at his knowledge, and desire to get things done well, but quickly. I think he could have created less dust by cutting more outside, but I realize that is a trade off in time, and time is money. So I am thrilled at the outcome, and know I don't need to look any further for a contractor for any other projects we have.

I needed a wall extended out about 15-20 inches in my kitchen to cover Ikea kitchen cabinets. Rick is very detailed and you can tell he takes pride in doing the job well...no matter how large or small the job may be. I have a couple of more projects that will require drywall repair and I look forward to using Rick's Home Improvement.

Bob made 10 high quality white cabinet doors to match the rest of our kitchen. Not only did Bob do a really fantastic job, but he sent us regular updates (with pictures) as the job progressed. We would definitely use him in the future, and I highly recommend him. PS: Did you know he assists in the restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright houses?

Mark remodeled our kitchen for us. We had a brand new laminate floor installed, kitchen cabinets with crown molding and light rail, under cabinet lighting, and granite countertops. Mark was quick, clean and very professional. The floor was completed in 2 days the cabinets done in 1 and the undercabinet lighting and counters done in 1. All together we got a brand new kitchen done in 4 days. Not only was the work done great but Mark was easy to work with and very conscious of our budget. We had other estimates that were well below Mark's and he has a 5% competitive match but he stated it was not a reasonable bid but did lower his price some to help us. He was still higher than the others but he confidently proved that he had better quality cabinets which was majority of the additional cost. Couldn't be happier with the finished product.

Amazing! Kevin and Scott were professional, punctual, and reasonable. They have great design sense and the talent to make it happen. They tore out beams in my family room, put in 8 can lights, refinished all of my doors, trim, and kitchen cabinets, rerouted a gas line and they are a Ready scheduled to come back and renovate my laundry room. I have had numerous compliments and give. Their name out to three people, and they only just finished the work two days ago. We lucked out finding contractors this good.

Michal is great! He does fantastic work and knows what he is doing. He did the drywall in my kitchen, laid the porcelain flooring perfectly and installed my cabinets as well as a few other things all for a really great price! He cleans up each day after himself which made my job easier and he is professional. I will be using him again for future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
