Ofer and his team provided good communication, arrived in a timely manner and and met my expectations for vent cleaning job. They didn't mind me asking questions along the way and showed me pictures of multiple vents before and after. I plan to call this company back for annual HVAC maintenance and have already referred them to others. It's amazing how much crap builds up in the HVAC system over the years. Thanks for the help guys!

Bob has been to my house multiple times now for different issues and is always available whenever anything comes up. The best part of working with Bob is that I know I can trust him, he doesn't try to use any kind of lingo or anything you don't understand in order to sell you on something you don't need. He's always up front and honest, unlike many HVAC contractors I have encountered in the past. I recommend Bob to everyone I know who has any HVAC needs. Highly recommended.

Robert responded to our request within minutes, set up a time for the very next day, arrived on time, got straight to work, clearly was well prepared, installed two Nest thermostats, even worked on wiring on the actual HVAC units, gave me an obsessively detailed worksheet with the serial numbers for the Nest associated with each HVAC system, then recommended maintenance on those units, then stuck to the honest estimate he had provided before starting the job. We couldn't be more satisfied with this professional.

This job installed and supported by Casa is a 3 unit mini-split ductless AC system for my 100 year old bungalow without ducts. Let me tell you something about Mike, owner of Casa Heating & Cooling. I received a bid from him as a first-time user of Thumbtack, driven by a frustration in my inability to constructively collaborate with big-box HVAC general contractors on what I was after. I immediately received a request to bid from Mike which resulted in 2 very thorough site visits to properly estimate my job and the myriad of manufacturer options available. Mike worked with me to ensure that he was quoting exactly what I was looking for in terms of capability of the system, and he configured the solution to be expandable in the future - all for the same price or maybe even less than the original big-box quote. Mike oversaw the installation himself, doing much of the heavy lifting and complex pieces of the project on his own - and was onsite during the entire process. Mike is also extremely reliable for support, much of which is a result of user-error and general dumbness on my part, but he is extremely responsive both in communication and on-site visits. Do NOT hesitate to do business with Casa - he's the real deal and provides better service and better value than the big names like Four Seasons. You won't be disappointed.

I needed help installing legs on a couch. I had ordered a couch from Wayfair that came without predrilled holes for the leg assembly. The contractor that Wayfair referred me to kept delaying, so I turned to Doyle for assistance. Within 24 hours of first contact, the legs were installed on my couch. Doyle was very responsive, incredibly professional, and completed the fix in no time at all. He is very friendly and took the time to explain to me how I could do similar fixes myself in the future. I give him my highest possible recommendation.

Bobby's proposal was $500 less than the other three contractors. He installed a complete 14 Seer AC system including the condenser, coil, and line set. His work was fabulous. He cleaned up after himself. He's even coming back during the heat of the day this weekend to verify the Freon levels in the system are what they're supposed to be. Thank you

We were able to get in touch with GTC Comfort Air through Thumbtack. The representative and owner, Vlad, was wonderful in responding to our request in a timely manner. The quote was very reasonable compared to the other quotes that we got. The price point was great! Because smaller firms have fewer overheads than bigger and more established firms, the quote was a third less compared to the two bigger HVAC contractors in our area. He was very knowledgeable and identified issues with our system and we were able to install a new system in a timely manner. I would strongly recommend GTC for those with HVAC issues or want a new system.

I had humidifier installation service from Jaime. I found him on Thumbtack and he was very patient answering all my questions before the project. He was exact on time for my appointment, which is very rare among all the contractors I've used. The space on the return duct is pretty tight for the humidifier. He moved an electric box and reconnect furnace flue to make space. The installation was done smoothly without any issues, and he cleaned up everything before left. I really enjoyed his service and I will definitely call him again for my future needs on my HVAC system.

Martin was great to deal with from start to finish. He came out on the weekend to discuss the project in detail. After spending the time to hear what we were looking for he explained how he would do the work and what he recommended. He was able to give a quote before leaving and even set up a time to come back to complete the project. Martin was professional, courteous, competitive and knowledgeable. Sometimes it seems difficult to find someone honest and reasonable. I am happy to say I feel lucky to have found this contractor. He is my go to guy for now on for all things HVAC. For anyone interested in what work we had done...we have a finished basement that did not have any supply or return ducts so it was always cold, stagnant air down there. He was able to install both supply ducts and a return to make the basement comfortable. He made quick work of the project and was considerate enough to also clean when done. I can’t say it enough, I am glad I found Martin. He will be the contractor I opt for when it comes time to replace our furnace and a/c.

As a general contractor, i call on Direct Improvements to assist me with all my HVAC. I've been working with Direct Improvements for 8 yrs now. In fact i met the owner Thornell, in Iraq. He was charged with servicing AC units to keep military personnel cool. Direct Improvements has been critical to my Contracting business. They do fantastic work and are timely. With mechanicals being so important in rehabbing and renovations Direct Improvements is my go to company. I've also referred Thornell to many customers and they've always appreciated his professionalism and quality of work.

Sal and Sam are shining examples of what HVAC contractors should be; I work in the industry on the commercial sales side, so I hold technicians to a high standard with their work, professionalism and ability to problem solve - Pinnacle has bested any other group I've hired in the past, so I only use Sal and Sam for my work (it's like finding a mechanic for your car that loves your car as much as you do!) I have recommended Pinnacle to not only customers of mine needing residential service/replacement, but also to my parents for their HVAC needs. Look no further, ladies and gents, your optimal choice for HVAC contractor is here! Thanks, Sal and Sam, for all the work you've done for me and my family throughout the years! Less

Moussa and his crew completely did my basement. Before starting, my basement was completely raw and Moussa worked with me in understanding what work needed to be done how he was going to do it, what the final finishes were going to look like (prior to starting), finished early and was did a tremendous job. I highly recommend Moussa's work. Moussa also gave a fair price, other quotes I received were much higher and doubt they could have done nearly as good of a job. Please contact if you need before / after pictures. All my concerns, big or small, and at any point in the construction process were answered and addressed without hesitation. Nothing to complain about when the job was finished! Task performed (all to code): Framing, drywall, tiled, installed an entire bathroom in the basement (had to install sump pump), concrete, HVAC, gas lines, electrical, lighting, installed a spiral staircase where there was no staircase originally.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.
