Monique and her mom, Betty, were incredible to work with! I had a lot of bumps in the road--changes in numbers, addresses, etc-- and Monique was more than understanding throughout the whole process. From our first conversation to our final goodbyes, she was nothing but kind, professional and fun to hang out with and talk to! She was also more than willing to listen to what I had in mind for myself and bridesmaids (and my mom too!) and also make her own professional suggestions to really make sure we all looked our best on my special day. The makeup didn't move all night, despite lots and lots of happy tears! She even gave us all little lip kits for touchups throughout the day! I really do owe the world to Monique and Betty for being such a pivotal part of my wedding day. If you're looking for a flexible, talented, warm and fun makeup artist, look no further! Monique is your girl!

Lerin did a great job doing my makeup on my wedding day (12-12-15)! She and an assistant did makeup for 11 girls (including myself, 3 moms, my aunt, my step sister, & my 5 bridesmaids). Everyone looked wonderful & makeup was tailored to each person's personal taste. Would recommend 100% to anyone who wants to get makeup professionally done. Lerin is also very personable & responsive. So happy that I found her as I had researched many other makeup artists but their makeup abilities, in my opinion, were not up to par with Lerin's. I plan on using Lerin for any future special occasions or photoshoots.

Traci was just wonderful! Traci uses an airbrush style makeup and let me tell you... if you sweat ... it's so the way to go! I felt like I was wearing no makeup at all. My skin didn't feel caked on and it just felt so great and I have very sensitive skin! All my girls loved it and so did my mom! We would ask for suggestions and touch ups and Traci helped with it all! Thank you for all your help!

I could not be more grateful for finding such amazing makeup artists for my wedding. I am EXTREMELY picky when it comes to makeup (I have done my own makeup for all of my brothers weddings instead of getting it done) but she made me feel so beautiful without being over done. My main concern was if she'd be able to cover up a few blemish scars and she completely did! My bridesmaids and I were beyond pleased and would use her a million times over. Thank you so much !!!

Lisa did my makeup as a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding. I felt like she really understood what I wanted and was able to give recommendations. Some makeup artists say "pick you own color" and she was able to say what blush/lipstick/etc. she thought would look best with the eye look. She also did great brows!

I was super nervous to hire her because this is my first time using thumbtack. I was nervous incase i ended up not liking my makeup for my formal. But she literally turned out to be my favorite makeup artist. I've been getting my makeup done at different place: Mac, sephora, color room, etc. But she's by far the best. She really makes sure your makeup/ look is perfect. If she doesn't like how something turned out/was applied, she redo's it. She really does take her time and focus's on your makeup. i had a eyebrow hair growing and she even plucked it. She really does want you to look perfect! highly recommend her :)

Julie was amazing! she did my hair and makeup for both my bridal portrait sitting and my wedding, as well as a few ladies in my bridal party. I wish I had occasion to have her do my makeup and hair ALL the time because she was fabulous. Professional, on time, friendly, and everyone looked fantastic. 10/10 would absolutely pick her again!

I did trails with a total of four different makeup artists for my wedding. Monica by far is the most experienced, communicative, organized, and generous. First, all of her instruments were clean (brushes, sponges, spatulas...) and she mixed colors on a glass mirror instead of with her hands or on the palette. Second, she asked for my opinion/thoughts on every product BEFORE putting it on my face and I could tell she welcomed all the comments. This is extremely important to me in a trial since so many artists are stubborn in the way they like to do makeup--I sensed none of that in Monica. She was willing to change the look as we went multiple times. Third, after my trial, I kept in communication with Monica with pictures throughout the day and suggestions (for example, that the eyeliner was transferring onto my eyelid fold). She kept these in mind between the trial and service day. Some concerns: When putting together the final contract, there were some math errors (to my advantage). I corrected these and no harm done. Monica had to back out of my service date due to a family emergency and left me in the hands of her assistant (and gave me a free second trial), who is equally talented, but not as organized or experienced. My wedding day look turned out great, still... I wish that I had Monica instead.

Working with Patricia was great! Before we met she was very responsive and answered all my questions. She was very sensitive to my needs and asked me detailed questions to make sure she was giving me the look I wanted. She made me feel at ease with the whole process. Not only can she do makeup, she is a wiz with hair! She did my hair and makeup for my bridal shower and I got tons of compliments. Hiring her again for my wedding day! Highly recommend.

Eva is the BEST makeup artist. She is extremely professional and makes you feel like a princess. I had originally hired Eva for my bridal makeup but after my bridal trial I ended up hiring for several other events including my wedding makeup. The day of the wedding she arrived early, got everyone done ahead of schedule but made sure everyone looked great and was satisfied. She definitely goes above and beyond to make sure you are happy. I will definitely hire her for future events.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

  • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
  • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
  • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
  • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
  • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
  • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
  • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

  • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
  • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
  • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
  • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
  • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.
