We did a short move within the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago with a LOT of boxes--many of them loaded down with heavy books. Travel time was almost nonexistent, but the rest was completed in a little over 4.5 hours. The three movers who helped us unload everything were Johnny, David, and Earnest. These guys were excellent--diligent, very friendly, and complete professionals in whom I have complete confidence. Nothing was broken or damaged in any way--including china, electronic devices, and personal paintings which were literally priceless. The scheduling was off, as we called to confirm 2 days in advance, but because we missed their call a day in advance they cancelled our reservation, which was annoying. Things got even trickier when flash flooding trapped our entire belongings on the truck for the night because they were unable to immediately unload it. Johnny and David personally vouched for our belongings and promised to return first thing the next day, weather permitting. They were true to their word and Johnny kept a very honest record of the clock the whole time. Highly recommend these guys.

Extreme movers were fantastic. They were both extremely fast and careful. It was a difficult day to move with the snow but they did it in record time. I would HIGHLY recommend them and would hire them again in the future.

Awesome job. Hands down will hire Melvin and his team for moving. A case of Underpromise and over delivered. Three guys came in for the two movers quote and completed the job. They came prepared with dolly, blankets and wrap and other tools. Although I used my own blankets for the job.

I hired TLF services to move our furniture to a different apartment in the same building. The movers were punctual, very friendly, took extreme care in assembling and disassembling furniture, also moved it around a bit for us to see decoration wise and finished the job well within the time limit. I will definitely hire TLF services again.

The Specialists were very helpful with my move! I moved from walk-up to walk-up on a very hot day. They completed the move quickly and efficiently, and took care that my items were moved safely. I definitely couldn't have done it myself! I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to hire movers. Thank you so much to all of you!

Hands down the best movers in town, we’ve worked with Two men and a truck as well as E-Z Movers and I have to say choosing Granat Labor was the best decision, him and his team made sure they were on time, very responsive and no hidden fees and no catches, they reassembled when needed and made sure we were happy!

Derrick and his crew did an outstanding job w our move this month. Derrick was very prompt w returning my emails and answered every question I had. He had some great recommendations to help our move go better ( he recommended 4 movers instead of 2-which was much better) the workers were very professional and hard working. I highly recommend them. I will definitly use them again.

Pick Up Movers is the best moving company I have ever hired. They transported my household for almost 700 miles with no problems whatsoever. Pierre was a wonderful help and Kenan was not only the hardest working crew member, but the friendliest as well. If I ever need to move again, there will only be one moving company I will call. Thank you all so much!

I had two very difficult apartments to move out of and into - a 2nd floor walk up in Chicago with a very narrow, spiral staircase, and a 4th floor walk up in NYC with very little street parking available. The movers never blamed me for the challenge either apartment presented, but conducted their work swiftly and professionally. My furniture and boxes were out of the first apartment in an hour, and made it to my new apartment in just three days despite terrible weather across the entire Northeast. During the move-in, the movers could not find any street parking within 75 feet (poor guys!), which only meant I had to pay an extra 75$ fee, which I was already made aware of as a possibility in the estimate, and the foreman handled the situation courteously and professionally. Because of the massive distance the guys had to cover from truck to apartment on this end, the move took a little over two hours, but it was no less impressive! All of my furniture was completely undamaged and the only broken thing was a bowl that I personally had failed to pack securely. I paid exactly what the estimate predicted (minus the 75 feet distance fee) and was overall pleased with the communication and process. My moving coordinator went through the estimate with me in detail beforehand, explaining certain fees that applied to my situation (in my case, both cities required shuttles (rather than large semis) on city streets so there was a fee to transfer my stuff off of/onto smaller vehicles, there was also a small fee for the flights of stairs at each location, but this was minimal). I had to add a few items of furniture three days before the move, and my coordinator drafted a new estimate for me painlessly and easily despite the last minute notice (I believe you're allowed up to 2 business days before the move to make changes). This company provided me with one of the most decently priced estimates after I had been dealing with other, larger companies that were asking for $8000 for a move that STI did for just over $2000. I highly, highly recommend their service.

I had a really good experience with this company. They worked really hard to move my stuff up 4 flights of stairs since I had no elevator and it was almost 90 degrees outside. The two men were extremely professional, kind, and punctual! The move went smoothly and they were accommodating!!! My furniture is all in place thanks to them. I also got a great quote from them. Will definitely use them if I ever need movers.

Jay and his team are amazing! They came on time, moved two huge couches (not an easy task out of my small building entrance) and they did it smoothly and efficiently. Their name speaks to their process, they are smooth movers. Will definitely use again and can't speak more highly about their service!

Our experience with Gabriel & Jeff of Move Mania was excellent. The crew was punctual, professional, respectful & accommodating to our needs. This is our first experience with a moving company. In two previous years, we moved ourselves. This is by far a great experience. Move Mania will now be our preferred movers. Thank you Gabriel & Jeff.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
