Our daughter (Kivi) started with the recorder in 4th grade, and soon graduated to clarinet. By Middle School, she was taking lessons from a classical teacher who advanced her skills markedly. Upon reaching high school, she was in demand by the jazz band - whose leader persuaded her to take up the saxophone. Kivi loved the sax, and loved jazz, but clarinet remained her first instrument. I thought of the great jazz clarinet players: Pete Fountain at the top of a substantial list. But we could find no one who could teach jazz clarinet. Finally, we attended an event at VanderCook, and one of the presenters gave us Jon's name. Kivi studied with Jon for about two years. I was disappointed with the amount of time Kivi had to spend practicing Jon's lessons - what high schooler has time for anything? Nevertheless, Kivi learned a great deal from Jon, and was the only student to ever perform a clarinet solo in our high school's jazz band history ("Jack the Bear"). Jon was unique in my experience in that he taught what Kivi wanted to learn - rather than imposing a rigid course of instruction. If you are considering private lessons that offer something both valuable and unique, please look no further than Jon Novi.

Bob is great! Patient and fun. We have worked with him for over a year and he even organized four 6-year-olds for a band for the school talent show in a very short time.

Tom had taught both my brothers how to play guitar and me being the youngest I wanted to do everything my brothers did. Tom started teaching me guitar when I was around 12 years old. He was the best teacher ever and still is. He was very thorough and was very involved in my progress which is important. He also interacted with me by playing while I played, which helped me respond better to the music. He made learning guitar fun and easy. I learned so much over the years and as I got older, now 28 years old I have written several songs, jammed with many, and have played in a band. He has also opened me up to bass, drums, and piano because he taught me how to listen to music and read music. Hopefully when my children are old enough they will learn from Tom, as well. I highly recommend Tom Margaritas for anyone who wants to learn guitar. It's kind of amazing that after 16 years I am still in contact with Tom my one and only guitar teacher. I'm feeling awesome cause I learner guitar from a truly inspiring person who is so creative and talented.

This band is terrific! They ran everything from the moment the evening started, right up to the last song! Jim Rallis did all the entrance announcements for the bridal party, and made each individual person feel special! We were able to set up our own song list and they performed each song perfectly! Very professional, and absolutely a blast to party with. There was never any down time, when the band took a break, Jim turned into a DJ and the floor never emptied! This was a very special night for my daughter and l, the band set it up for me to surprise my daughter during the father daughter dance by having me sing our special song to her with a wireless mic, we will never forget that moment! The band is very easy to work with, they performed special requests, allowed several of our guests to sing and play with the band, and had the bride and groom up on stage singing and hammering away on the cowbell! They made our night very personal as if they were part of the family. Angie also took pictures and videos from the stage that were unbelievable, this was something our photographer wasn't able to get, and a totally different perspective! If your looking for a band that can do it all, this is it! Terry & Mary Jo

Vinnie was awesome! The guests could not stop raving about him. He was punctual, very professional and very friendly. His voice and music was great. He played to the audience needs and had a great variety of songs. He was interactive with the guests during breaks and played songs they requested. I had younger group of high school/college kids as well as an older group all of which loved his music. Many of the guests asked for his contact information and I'm sure I will be seeing him at parties my guests will be having in the future.

Two of my sons took piano lessons from Miss Linda when they were 5-6 and 7-9 years old. Both boys are very different (personality, work ethic, temperament, talent) from one another, but Linda was able to encourage the push them to achieve a level of musical appreciation and performance that has helped both excel in the orchestra and band instruments they have taken up now they are older. A very talented musician herself, Linda also 'gets' kids and has a gentle way of instruction that encourages children to want to practice and improve each week. Highly recommend Linda!

The B-Side Band performed at our fundraising in November. They were outstanding!. I would highly recommend them for your next event. From securing our date to discussing the details of the evening, the members of the band were extremely helpful in guiding us. Our guests enjoyed their playlist and couldn't get off the dance floor.

My daughter, Piper, started her 1st music lessons with Miss Jessica at age 7. She laid the foundation for love of music which continues to this day. Her thoughtful lessons designed to suit Piper's ability, made learning fun and easy. Her uncanny patience brought them through periods when faced with greater music challenges. I appreciated her approachable demeaner and willingness to keep an open dialogue. Piper passed from piano to French horn in 5th grade when school band was offered. With the benefit of lessons from Miss Jessica, it made for a smooth transition. Thanks for 4 great years! Kate (Piper's mom)

The Big Eagle Band was established in Chicago, IL, in January 2008. Covering a range of jukebox favorites from the 1970’s to present day, The Big Eagle Band sets its sights on recreating what is in your establishment’s jukebox, live on stage. The Big Eagle Band features John Beniacs on bass and vocals, Matt Stone on guitar and vocals, Mark Sibincic on drums and Phil Valenti on guitar. All members are in their early 30's, jamming the music everyone loves. John, Matt, Mark and Phil have a long sordid history of playing in original bands dating back to the mid-90’s (most recently Mark and John in Government Warning and Matt and Phil in Killie McGee and Point 08). While styles and genres fade in and out, hits remain, and this idea brought the four members of The Big Eagle Band together. With everyone’s prior experience, it was a matter of weeks before the band was armed and ready to bring its show to the masses. The Big Eagle Band’s performance is guaranteed to electrify and stimulate any crowd with their diverse catalog of jukebox favorites and humorous banter — the perfect ingredients that make any show not just fun, but a blast! The Big Eagle Band is professional and is available for booking not only for bar gigs, but also for corporate events, festivals and public or private parties. Offering well over 6 hours of music, The Big Eagle Band can provide entertainment all night long.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
