Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do you move large pieces of furniture?

Moving large furniture can be done with help from the best movers in your area and careful planning. First, get an idea of how much the furniture weighs and how much each mover can manage. The next step is figuring out the path the furniture will take as it exits its point of origin and makes its way to its new home. Professional movers then use dollies, furniture protectors and personal safety gear for a safe, smooth move.

My only complaint is that it would have been nice to know in advance the day and time of my move vs. 2 dates and a text message 24hrs prior to moving (with time changes in between). we had to drive 9 hours overnight after our move...

Chicagoland Moving & Storage is a great moving company! Ben was very professional, honest, explained everything to us and answered any questions that we had. He also quoted us a reasonable price for our move. On the day of our move, we had Tito and crew. They were absolutely fantastic! They were punctual, professional, personable, very careful with our items and moved quickly through the move. We ended up being under our estimate, which was great! The best part was that I lost my engagement ring in all the packing chaos the week before and I let Tito know to please look out for my ring in the move.... he found it! I was so overwhelmed with emotion and thanked him endlessly. They were all such a wonderful team to work with. They are truly a 5 star company! I would definitely use them again. Thank you Ben, Tito and crew!

The movers showed up on time. We got it done quickly. They have good communication to confirm the move, let you know when they are on the way, and another call when five minutes out.

Tom and Miguel were fabulous taking every precaution to make sure the move was completed without any damage to ANYTHING! From blankets to routing they were very careful with my piano and home. As this was a move within my house (although not an easy move!) Tom was able to tune my piano immediately after the move. He took his time and explained what he was doing and why. I highly recommend Tom and his team. 5 star all the way! Thanks Tom!

Excellent piano movers! Very conscientious about the move. Used ramps and padding to protect not only the piano but also the walls and woodwork in my home. Would definitely use them again. Highly recommend them.

The team that did my move were incredibly polite and thorough. My items were all wrapped very well and arrived in excellent condition. The team was very fast despite the fact that they were being paid by the hour. My only negative was that the woman I spoke with to schedule the move was not very clear and had to call me back twice to clarify details about the move that I had previously given her.

It was a very difficult, very heavy move. It was a Rowe Juke Box from the bassement to the garage. Up (11) steps. After a fes attempts they were able to move the Juke Box Player, but with some damage to the walls and floor. They were very appologic but of course nothing could be done. After a few minutes we settled the matter. They were very good but this move really tested their ability. Still a good choice.

We hired SteelMen moving to move us from our home in Palatine to our new home in Libertyville. They did a fantastic job! They sent 4 guys and had to make two trips but worked so quickly and efficiently. They took extra care of all of our furniture and fragile/valuable boxes. They helped assemble furniture as well as organized the boxes in each room and the garage. They made our move into our new home so easy and helped us so much! They went the extra mile and we really appreciated it. I would definitely recommend them for your next move!

The movers arrived in the time window agreed upon, worked hard and fast, took good care of my items, and put everything in the rooms they belonged in where I wanted them. David answered all my questions during the booking process, called to confirm details the day before, checked in at the beginning of the move to be sure his team was meeting my expectations, and made sure everything was satisfactory at the end of the move before his team left. Payment was what we agreed upon, no hidden fees, and making the payment was simple with several options to meet anyone's preferences. I am very happy with Sweet Home Movers and would definitely use them again.

Even though I hate writing negative reviews, for this vendor , I need to do this someone else doesn’t fall into their trap and tricks I hired this company for a local move (9.5 miles) , to move my home. David visited my home, saw everything that need to be moved and made an estimate for five hours and $850.00. My contract was to disassemble, pack, move, unpack a d assemble things. We both were clear in our communication and we agreed too. Between the estimate day and the day of actual move I moved almost all of personal clothings and got rid off a few furniture stuff ( actual items to be moved were far less than the estimate) Still on the day of the move, they took 8 hours, charged me $1489.00 and half the work was only done. None of the items were unpacked . They didn’t even bother to remove the plastic wraps on furniture. They dumped almost all the boxes in my living room. Surprisingly they didn’t write any identification on most boxes when they packed and moved. So at the destination nobody was able to figure out what was in each box I had to hire someone else the following two days to get my new home in order . Here is the trick, they will give you a quote and an estimate. Like insurance policies there is a * fine print which says we will bill you on a hourly basis and this is just an estimate..!! When they arrive, they simply kill time and keep the clock running. In my case three people came and two did most of the job. David , the leader and who owns the business did participate in the move for some simple items. He was ‘supervising’ for most part , but they billed me for three people. Such a rip off and tricky affair. On top of everything, they showed up late in the morning even though the schedule was planned two weeks in advance. It was a terrible experience and I would never recommend this company to anyone..!

Very professional movers! Arrived 5 minutes before the scheduled time and worked hard to make sure everything was right. They had to move my couch down a narrow set of stairs and bends. They were very patient and professional the entire time. I would hire them again if I need to.

From the time the pick up was scheduled, Jason kept in touch. Kept me updated when he will come pick up the table. Moving was very professional and they took care that none of my walls were scratched in the move. He also refelted the table making it look like new. Highly recommended

I spoke with Brad (really nice guy) and decided to use Vitesse vs. Elite Moving. Boy was that a bad decision. Brad may be a nice guy, but most of his movers and trucks leave something be desired! This was my 7th move since 2008, so I'm not new to this rodeo. My moves are relatively large (~5 bedroom ~3,000 sqft houses). I know how to pack and prepare ahead of time to save movers time and trouble. We color code or label boxes and then at the destination house we put the same label on the door to the room so they can see where items go. The day of our move, the five movers were 40 minutes late. When they arrived, I took a look at their trucks. My first concern was that the 2 trucks they sent weren't going to be big enough. And once I looked a little closer at the trucks condition of the trucks (more about that below), I knew this wasn't going to shape up to a good move. Compared to Elite that shows up with uniformed workers and nice trucks, Vitesse's trucks were old, had temporary tags and had holes in the floors of the bed. Yes, holes as big as 12" straight to the ground! Thank goodness it wasn't raining the day we moved! Now for the move, we walked through the house to show what was being moved. The packing and handling of furniture was pretty poor. They didn't always use pads, instead, they used shrink wrap. As three guys were trying to jam a leather sofa through a door, with just shrink wrap (no pads), I was really surprised they didn't rip the leather or break the sofa more. I'm not sure what the shrink wrap did for the sofa! My artwork also had only shrink wrap. One large piece worth several thousand dollars had its glass broken. An irreplaceable custom mirror made for my restaurant was broken. What really upset my wife and me was that we told them to take extra special care of an extremely expensive dining room table top. Upon delivery, my wife asked them to lean it against the wall so the top wouldn't get scratched. However, these "movers" took off the padding and put the table face down on the floor! We were dumbfounded! What was even the point of wrapping it if you were going to lay it on the ground afterwards? Except for 2 of the guys, the movers were super slow and constantly took breaks. What was obvious too was that some of the guys acted like they couldn't speak English. I mentioned above that we label our boxes to match the rooms. However, the movers once they were about 1/3 of the way unloaded, just decided to put everything in the garage or living room. It didn't matter if it was for the nursery or office, etc. It was just all stacked in the garage and living room. Even if we said, "please take this to the office," it would end up somewhere else" I had informed the moving company that my prior move required two 26' trucks. I did tell Brad that I sold an elliptical and washer and dryer set, and there'd be a little more room, but they sent a 26' truck and 14' truck. Needless to say, they had to make a second trip with one of the trucks because they were about 8-10' short. During this second trip, the foreman had to leave three guys behind to unload. While the foreman was gone, my wife told me that she probably unloaded 1/4 of the truck herself. Apparently when the cat's away, the mice will play, so while the foreman was gone the three guys left behind didn't do much. Vitesse also charges you for packing tape ($5/roll) and shrink wrap ($30/roll), so the add-ons can begin to add up. Compared with some of the more reputable companies, these items are included. A good moving company will also offer to help you put furniture back together or arrange it in the room. If I wasn't an able-bodied person, I would have had to hire other movers to help move the furniture in the house to the correct places. Most of these guys were just lazy and wanted out as quickly as possible. Even though I’m sure the foreman would have agreed to help move some stuff, without other helpers that cared, more harm than good would have probably come about from asking them to help put items together. No point paying $150/hr for guys to make matter worse! I understand the service and labor industry, so I still gave the foreman a nice tip. It's not his fault his company gave him sub-par trucks (nor big enough) and sub-par movers.

The best company to help you with the move. Everything was prompt. No damage, always came on time and always respond to all your questions. If you ask me I have never worked with a better company, and I am not talking about just moving companies. Go with them, their quote is one of the best, if you find something better then just compare the reviews. Dont ever go with Teray Boyd" from Ray's Removal Local/Long Distance Moving. Never work with him. This guy is a scammer and should not even be talked to. You can find him on Thumbtack. Don't ever hire him.

Ben was amazingly helpful. We had some issue with the garage and Ben was happy enough to get to extra mile. We were able to park outside the garage and Ben was still able to help us unload and move all the stuff from the truck despite the extra distance. We had some extra stuff and those were also moved to the new apartment without question. It was great to work with Ben and his team. The whole moving process was so streamlined and easy. And not a single question asked. I recommend Ben to all. He is best guy for any kind of job in that area.

My need was to move a couple of pieces of heavy furniture from one location to another within my home that involved stairs. This company was lighting fast in their response time, provided a reasonable and realistic quote. The workers showed up on time and were very pleasant to interact. They got the job done quickly and efficiently. I would definitely hire this company again for any moving needs in the future.
