Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service?

When searching for the best house cleaning service near you, consider the depth of your cleaning needs, your budget and the size and condition of your home. Read reviews from verified customers of any cleaning service that you’re looking to hire. Also, check out the reviewers’ photos and do background checks on reviewers to ensure they’re not employed by established cleaning firms or maid agencies.

Did a great job on short notice. I was in a rush to clean a house out before the end of the month and they were the only company that could come out. They had to squeeze me in at 6pm and still made the place shine.

I hate that I have to write this, but I think it’s important for those looking to find the right person to clean their house. First, I will say she did a pretty good job cleaning and took her time. I hired her as I’m out of state to clean my mothers house. She has trouble seeing and I want to make sure she lived in a clean environment. I was quoted $330 for the whole house (I expected to pay more for the first deep cleaning) My mother called that she did not come with any cleaning supplies (mop, bucket, vacuum) which I assumed would be the standard. (Now I know to ask in the future) She had to come back to do the downstairs a few days later, and she told my mother it was another $300. My mother asked her to leave. Let me start by I would have had no problem paying the extra charge for the time if that was disclosed to me. She also only took cash (I’m out of state) so my mom had to run to the bank and I had to send my mother the money. Half is a learning experience for me In the future on what questions to ask, however this information should have been disclosed up front. I’m pretty bummed because I wanted to have her come in monthly on me for my mom. I’m not writing this to bash her, just to communicate better with her customers and always give starting prices if you are going to charge more.

My house is sparkling clean once again, thanks to the HNL team! The team arrived on time, asked specific questions as to what I wanted, and once completed asked me to look everything over to make sure it was completed to my liking and that they didn’t miss anything. They did a fantastic job. I would definitely hire them again.

It's my first time hiring cleaning service.  I honestly didn't know what to expect.  My first initial thought about Ms. Tosha was that she was nice. So I ended up hiring her, she gave me a price of $330 for a deep clean. She went over the details of what deep cleaning is and we set on the date and time. She arrived a bit late which was not a big deal to me. Once she made it we talked about laundry and pricing for it which was $75. Keep in mind my house is big (I clean it and know how hard it is to clean it alone) but in this case she said she had other employees helping her. I left the house at 9:30 am and came back about 5:30pm and my initial thought was "they are still not done because there's still alot missing" I went about putting groceries away and left again to pick up my oldest. Once I got back at about 5:45pm Tosha ask me what I thought about the cleaning? And I was surprised since in my head I thought she still wasn't done. So I asked her if she wanted my honest opinion and she said yes, so I went around the house and showed her what I was disappointed with and she agreed.  She ended up staying until 7pm to clean it to my satisfaction and she stated how hard is it to find good employees...again I understand because my house is big and I know how long it could take to clean.  Tosha looked annoyed but I figured it's been a long day she is exhausted and at that moment I felt for her than she left. Well than I go downstairs and noticed there's 2 baskets with dirty laundry 1 more in the washer and 2 in the dryer.  So I took pictures and asked her about the dirty laundry.  Than I notice that my new broom is missing and she had left her broom, no big deal I thought and I asked her for it back, in our conversation I told her since she didn't finished all the laundry that I was going to only pay her $50 for it because it wasn't complete and that's when the text msj went south...she wanted my honest opinion than I figured she is mad with her employees but the way she answered me, she made me feel as if she was also upset at me. Before all of the text msj we talked about setting up once a month cleanup well she hasn't even reached out to schedule the next time. (At this point I understand we will not be conducting business again) thank you tosha for going above and beyond to clean my house. It's not me who you should be upset at. I ended up just paying Tosha $330, because that's what she decided to do. You can see my attached pic from our conversation.
