They were there within 30 minutes of my requested time and moved pretty efficiently! They were very mindful of our hardwood floors and kept up good spirits despite moving in 90+ degree weather! I also forgot to pick up a tv box and they offered to take it in their car so it would be safe! Would definitely hire again!

Great for people looking for cheap movers. They got everything here safely and quickly. However, they do not provide wardrobe boxes, do not plastic wrap or blanket wrap furniture or use mattress bags. It was more like a college move, just throw everything on a truck. Be specific with them ahead of time if you want these protective things or spend more on movers if you have nice things.

Great experience with Ollie and Angelo from TLF - they came on relatively short notice on a Sunday, and helped us move some of our bigger items in less than the time quoted by other moving companies. They let us know when they were on their way and arrived a bit early, and immediately got to work quickly and efficiently. Would recommend to anyone looking for reasonable moving rates!

Martin and King David Moving were an absolute delight! The whole crew was pleasant, professional and remarkably efficient: they packed up and moved everything out in record time, even with my jerky neighbor calling the cops because their truck was partially obstructing the alley (Martin was perfectly polite to the neighbor about moving the truck, he was just a mean dude). They were all smiling and cheerful all day, even after moving my oversized living room furniture to a 4th floor walk up. I finished unpacking yesterday and not a single thing was broken or damaged! I found the company through a bid on Thumbtack and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them!

Everything went well with the move...the guys did a great job. Even in 90 degree heat. The only item that didnt make the move was a glass lamp shade (still trying to locate it). Other than that, all my items in my packed 2 bedroom apartment made it to my new house in a little over 3 hours (an hour less than i was expecting!) I was charged for some packing materials but overall the price was fair. Well worth the cost than moving everything ourselves.

We had a complicated move in that we were leaving more behind than taking with us to the new place. And yet we still seemed to be taking a lot. Very efficient and polite. We would have come in way under estimate except we had to wait for access to the loading dock and freight elevator- not the guys fault. One cheap plastic hanger broke and a pashmina scarf ended up MIA. Everything else came through unscathed, or at least the 75% that I’ve unpacked so far. Happy with service and communication throughout process.

They were courteous, quick and careful. They easily figured out how to get everything into fit into our basement with space for us to walk, nothing got scratched, and they were finished within a couple of hours. They made it look easy, even moving a king bed down 3 floors!

My initial movers canceled the day off the move. After countless Google searches and Yelp reviews, not to mention the hassle of actually moving on the 1st. I was so thankful for Mobile Moving. My fiancé and I rented a truck and we're going to move everything by ourselves. After long hours we were able to move everything into the Uhaul but we're quit tired and wanted professionals to help us move everything into the new condo from the Uhaul. During my last desperation to find a movers on the day of thumtack sent me contact information for Mobile Moving and before I could send my question, Mr. Derrick had already contacted me. This company is professional, reliable, timely and incredibly affordable. Definitely will use on my next move and the array of payment options was wonderful. (Chase QuickPay, Cash, Paypal) Thank you

I'm not kidding when I say that Liberty Moving is the absolute best! They were timely, highly efficient, tentative, and just all around incredible!!! I called the company and scheduled my move with a young man named Jason. He was super friendly and helpful and walked me through the entire process. This company made moving so much smoother/easier than it had to be!!! Will be using them again in the future, but hopefully won't need to move anytime soon! Thank you guys so much!

Derek and his company were amazing. Worked to fit me in on their very tight schedule. Beyond expectations in their care and knowledge in moving an eliptical for me. Worked efficiently and helped move something else, in order to get the eliptical in. Amazing! Will certainly re-hire and refer people to.

These guys did a fantastic job. I needed a very heavy treadmill and elliptical moved up my basement stairs which has a tight right angle. I needed this done last min as I was moving and another company I hired cancelled two days before they were supposed to come. JDog gave me a next day apt, guys were on time, very polite, and professional. A small dent was put in my wall during the move and they came back out late that night and had it fixed good as new. They are def guys u can count on to do a great job and have pride in what they do. I would use them again if I wasn't moving out of state.

Jay and his team were an absolute pleasure to work with. They had everything you look for in a moving service: Hard-working, accommodating, flexible (dissembled and assembled some furniture in order to get it through a narrow hallway), careful, resourceful, and worked quickly. The pricing is a phenomenal value too. Jay and his team are a great group of guys and would recommend them to anyone looking to move.

Nice movers, on time, efficient, worked there butts off on one of the hottest days of the summer, up and down multiple flights of stairs for 2.5 hours and never once complained and or asked for a break. I had to remind them to take a break. Highly recommend their services if you have to move fast one a budget. The only thing they didn't offer were moving supplies and a truck.

They were the very best! Everything was securly wrapped. My belonging had to moved from my home in Chicago, two storage units and then off to South Carolina. They delivered exactly when they said they would. Even after the long drive they moved everything in our home and set-up as promised. They were resonably priced and my belongings didn't have to travel long distance with other people's belongings, like most long distant movere require.there was not even a nick on one piece of furniture, i was very impressed with how they wrapped everything very secure. The owner of the company it on top of all the details and his employees were acceptional! Thank you Eko outstanding job! Ann Gaynor

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
