Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Professional Movers could improve by never claiming to be "Professional" or "Movers". The time and date for my long-distance move were confirmed 12 days prior to the day of the move. I texted the night before "just checking in to see if we're still on for tomorrow at 8 am." There was NO response. I continued to make calls and texts with NO reply. I was forced to make last-minute arrangements and incurred unnecessary expenses and stress. What a sham.

I was very impressed by the You Move Me staff. From the initial walk thru to the day of the move, they were pleasant, knowledgeable and always available for questions. The movers worked tirelessly, were very careful with my belongings and finished early and under the estimate. I would definitely use them again.

Our movers were fantastic. They went above and beyond. The owner was amazing. We will never use another moving company. The leader of the move was tremendous, professional, and so totally understanding. We have never worked with such hardworking men and such Christian and faith driven men who believe in their goal to help people. Thank you. Tracey and Perry.

The movers themselves did a good job, but their quote didn't disclose multiple hidden charges that added several hundred dollars to our total. We estimated around $600 based on their rate and time estimate and we're charged over $1000 between extra fees for method of payment and undisclosed extra fees for moving certain pieces etc. The work was acceptable but the transparency in pricing was terrible. Would not recommend without serious improvements in how they quote.

They committed to a time (between 11AM and 12 PM) and date (Friday December 29, 2017), then called a few hours before to say they'd be late, but would send a 3rd man to make up time at the original price. Once the crew of only 2 men showed up (at 4PM) they were exhausted from the earlier moves and one of the crew took numerous long breaks slowing the load for a truck and 2 men I was paying for by the hour. After a couple hours, the supervisor called and said the 3rd man was not possible and asked me if they could send 2 men at an additional cost. I agreed as I did not feel the move would ever complete with the 2 men on site. The 2 additional men showed up a couple hours later and helped finish the loading and unloaded as well at the new place. By the time they finished this first load (there was a second load that was too late to try) it was 11 PM. Then I was confronted by a bill that was higher than I expected due to the long, long load time and exhausted workers, I paid ~$800 for a job that should have cost about $500 and been done earlier or maybe $800 and included both loads. Yes this was the holidays, but EkoMovers committed to the date and time and confirmed again only 2 days ahead of time. Oh there was some minor damage to my furniture, but I'm not that upset as the items damaged were utility items rather than fine items, but still...it was a haphazard move. How could they improve? Keep their commitments and not send exhausted crews out. Be careful and more professional. I would not recommend this company based on my experience. What's more, my neighbor across the street who was merely watching said he thought they looked pretty bad as well..
