Gary was quick to respond and worked hard on our plumbing project (a basement water line leak issue). He did a fine job fair price. We were happy with his work and haven't had any leaks since.

I am not someone who typically writes reviews, mainly because I'm not easily impressed. I'm not easily pleased. With that being said, Ian Williams completely exceeded my expectations and in my book a job well done doesn't go unrecognized. I am renovating my basement, and I needed 168 feet of base and shoe molding. Ian installed it PERFECTLY!! The price was fair, and the work done was absolutely excellent. I couldn't ask for more. Usually after a contractor leaves, I look over and pick apart there work, and I'll call them back to fix something, or I simply won't hire them again and won't refer them. With Ian Williams, I feel confident to refer him, and I will most definitely call him for future jobs. Ian also worked around my schedule, which made it easier for me. In my experience, a lot of contractors won't show up, or be late or have some other lame excuse. If Ian says he will show up at a specific time, he will be there, I assure you. Reliability and dependability seems to be rare these days. If you need some precision carpentry done, Ian Williams is the go to guy. If you want a contractor who is meticulous, picky and very particular about things, then Ian Williams is the only choice.

Tom is the most professional, timely contractor we have ever worked with. Not only is his work fantastic, he is an excellent communicator, which is hard to find someone with those two qualities in the construction business! Whether Tom likes it or not, he will be working on remodeling projects at our old farmhouse for years to come!

Ariel was professional and courteous, provided a reasonable quote to compare with other contractors. He had an opening in his schedule that worked out for my needs. Ariel and his crew worked hard and the six rooms look great. I would use them again.

We began the initial consultation phase in 2017. Steve and his crew began the first part of my remodeling job, wrecking out the old kitchen and building in a half bath in Feb. 2018. Once the half bath was in, we began the kitchen remodel. Since everything had to come out and the kitchen moved 12 ft north, it required a lot of drywall and construction first. The crew were always on time and worked steadily each day to bring it all together. Attention to detail was good and by the time the new cabinets arrived, you could really see the the kitchen space becoming a reality. With changes I made to the original plan(extending the porcelain flooring and adding a utility cabinet) the work was still completed close to the estimated date, and at or near budget for both phases. This new half bath and kitchen upgrade have certainly increased the value of my home, and the beauty and utility of the 2 new spaces is a joy every day! I would recommend The Home Improvement Group,LLC for any job, large or small that you would like to undertake in your home. Steve is great to work with and his staff, Christian and Al are top notch in their abilities and professionalism. 5 Stars!!

Start Date: 10/27/2017 End Date: 04/25/2018 Project: Adding a 12’ X 31’ 3rd Garage Stall I would recommend Ruby Construction for your construction needs. The owner, Bill was very courteous and good to work with. The workers were all nice and respectful to me and my property during the course of the job. Bill was willing to work with me in regards to changes in the original plan and reasonable in correcting any problems that arose (which were not many). I have not had any direct experience with hiring a contractor for a project. So I only knew what to expect going in to this from what I have heard from others (in reference to working with contractors in general). I was pleased with the work that was done and with the minimal issues that can happen with any project. I would have liked to see more communication from the contractor as far as updates and the plan for the progress of the project on a weekly basis. This is more personal preference than a problem with the contractor. I would get all of the information I requested when I contacted him. The projected timeline was exceeded by a lot because of the unusually long winter weather we experience this year. Overall, I am happy with the work that was done and how the completed project ended up. Thank you Ruby Construction for a job well done.

I contacted Pioneer Construction & Remodeling to get a quote on installing new/updated cabinets and countertop in a small outdated (somewhere in the early 60's) kitchen that had very little cabinet and counter space. Kevin came out shortly after i contacted him to give me a quote. Their quote was thought out completely and emailed in a timely manner. They were able to do the job in the quoted time and were very easy to work with. They even cleaned up the mess (including sweeping garage) when they were finished. I was/am so very happy with my kitchen now. I am now going to hire them to install new entry & storm doors.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
