After I overestimated my handywoman skills, Jeff came to the rescue. He replaced the PVC pipe I broke and put in new valves and pipes to replace the old, crusty ones that were leaking. My real concern, however, was that the drain pipe wasn't draining in the kitchen sink. He did everything he could to diagnose the problem, including renting and bringing in a machine to break up the obstruction. Unfortunately, the blockage was ice, and the only way to fix that is to wait. To expedite the process, Jeff suggested that my husband and I put a space heater near the pipe, just to keep it a little warmer than it would've been otherwise. About 48 hours later, Jeff's suggestion worked, and now our drain is doing what it's supposed to do. Jeff's prices are fair, so we didn't feel like we were overpaying or underpaying. He was friendly, tidy, and communicative throughout the project. We would trust him to handle any future plumbing projects, and perhaps we'll have him back to do some painting and other handyman-type stuff too. He takes pride in his work so you can take pride in your home.

Zach is great. He knows his stuff. He is friendly, soft spoken, helpful, knowledgable, and quick. Zach had several options for us to save us money, which usually included him knowing how to make something out of nothing using his craft and expertise. He did drywall repair, drywall ceiling repair, fixed locks, replaced tub drain, cleaned up bad woodwork, replaced a ceiling fan, caulked a tub, and fixed a wobbly toilet seat. All jobs needed to be done, but we had been putting them off for years, so we finally bit the bullet and hired someone. We will continually hire him to help us do those pesky things that we can't seem to get done or know how to do.

We had Jason out to replace some vinyl siding that blew off during a wind storm. Although it took a few days to find a time that worked, once he made it out, he did a great job at a reasonable rate (in the blistering cold!). We'll likely use him for some other home maintenance projects we've been putting off. Nice guy, proactive about customer service, and got the job done!

Trevor has done a number of jobs in my home ranging from window installation, installing crown molding, replacing our ceiling, and rebuilding our basement stairs. He also replaced a storm door on our house, and resealed/winterized our home. Trevor and his team are friendly, efficient, affordable, and provide superior quality in all their work. We are looking forward to our next project, finishing our basement and upgrading our pantry with custom shelving. Trevor is MY contractor and I hope others will hire him for their household needs. His work speaks for itself, and his positive, can-do attitude is incomparable!

Nate responded quickly and started the work requested in a prompt manner. He was extremely friendly with my family and we enjoyed having him around. We had a contractor on hand for another job and he was flexible and worked around the other project. He was very helpful and took on other projects we added on with enthusiasm. Altogether he powerwashed and painted a garage door, power washed siding and deck, installed a storm door and did deck staining for us. We will be calling him again.

He came out to repair shingles blown off during a wind storm. He replaced the shingles with some I had, offered advise as to why this happened all for a reasonable price.

Eric did an excellent job installing an exterior door and storm door. He also fixed another door that was installed incorrectly by another contractor. Eric was always on time and kept me updated of any changes in schedule. I will be using Eric again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
