Installed 3 rooms of carpeting. They arrived on time. They did a great job. Cleaned up and vacuumed the rooms. We provided the carpet. We purchased two 15' wide rolls and one 12' wide roll because we did not want any seems. I wanted a specific trim strip at the edge of the living room. Adrian was very accommodating. We discussed options for the doorways in the two bedrooms. We will install a reducer to match the bamboo wood flooring in the hallway. The doorways are finished with the tackless strips, but long term, we want to use the reducer over the area where the carpet meets the wood floor.

3 reviews 5.0 star rating 6/4/2013 Peter and his crew are amazing! We recently purchased a house and the floors were really beat up (stains from chemicals and pets, lots of scratches and nicks, floor stain almost completely gone from high traffic areas). So we had 2500 square feet of wood floor to be refinished. I emailed Peter asking for an estimate, and within a day, I got a response. He arrived on time and his quote was by far the most competitive out of the three that we got. He estimated that the whole job would take 3 days, which both my husband and I thought was almost a little too optimistic, however, Peter and his crew had it done in 3 days flat (they worked from 8 AM to after 5 PM to accomplish this). On the first day, he had sanded the area where we could look at stains. When we arrived to do so, he provided us with more stain options that we were expecting (and we ended up choosing one that we hadn't anticipated we would like, but when we saw it in the house, it was the perfect color). He was very patient while my husband and I discussed which stain we liked better. He added his opinion when we asked for it, and answered any questions we had for him. Our floors turned out beautifully! The work is definitely top notch and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out! It feels like we have a brand new house. We highly recommend IDC Flooring!!!

My mother-in-law had her wood floor serviced months back and the outcome was great. Every time we visit her house, the floor looks new and clean. Her house is currently on the market and they get good praises from market showings. Highly recommended. Great Job!

Radu did a great job restoring a red oak floor that had not been maintained for over 60 years. Through his expertise in wood flooring and floor refinishing techniques, he advised knowledgeably in selecting stain color and worked tirelessly to address gouges and other anomalies in the original flooring. He and his team were exceptionally professional and courteous throughout the process. As I finish a multi-year rehabilitation of the entire house, visitors comment first and most emphatically about the hardwood floor.

I hired Kosterna Construction to do various drywall projects, including building the framing and insulating the walls. They also put in support beams where needed, built a sub floor for tile in the kitchen, installed an exterior door with frame, built frames/molding around windows, evened out a sloping floor/ ceiling. I was able to buy my own materials and paid them for the labor. They are very experienced in all new construction and remodeling. Very nice, reliable, easy to work with. I thought they did great work for a fair price and plan on hiring them for future projects! attached are some photos

This is the second time in 10 years we have had Advanced Floors work on our wood projects. His work is meticulous and the finished product is stunning. Our first project we had existing wood floors which we added two rooms. With the current floors having to be refinished, the new raw wood added, he was able to have all the wood appear as though it was all installed new! This round, we bought a home and decided carpet was simply not for us. We had all the existing wood removed, and new wood added. Again, beautifully done! Mike was also able to refinish our staircase (which we did in a contrast color), and it is stunning. We have had work done by others, who claim to be "cheaper". You get what you pay for. Any kind of remodeling is difficult while you are living in the home in the process, but with a little patience, the results are well worth it. Highly recommended!

Brandon helped repair a rotting railing on our deck. He worked diligently on the repair and cleaned up the entire work area when he was finished. The rotting wood extended beyond what I saw and beyond his original quote. Brandon never once said anything about it will cost more because.... he was going to stick to his quote and do what it took to get it done.

I bought a mid-century home with carpet in the living room and the hall way. I wanted to restor the wood floor underneath the carpet, which was brand new. I asked him to save me the carpet, which he did. My dealings with Slewek couldn't be happier one! He did a great job and was willing to make right even the minor details at his expense! I appreciated his geneorosity and will recommand his work to anyone considering floor restoration. SooGin

To whom it may concern: I am writing to recommend the professional services of Neal Sherman, Sherman Floor Company. Neal recently stripped, sanded and refinished 40 year old wood floors in my home in Arlington Heights. I am most pleased with the results! Mr. Sherman performed the work exactly as specified, and did so in a timely and professional manner. He finished the job on time and took great care to minimize any inconvenience during the project. He also maintained a clean and safe workplace, and removed all debris. I am very pleased to offer this reference on Neal's behalf. You are welcome to contact me should you have any questions. Patrick patched 3 areas of stucco on my kitchen ceiling. His work was good, he was through, hung plastic to keep the mess contained and cleaned up when he finished. Job went well and looks good. He also took measurements for additional work we are contemplating, but I have not heard back from him with the estimates. Work was done 3 weeks ago.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
