We had a good experience with Sheryl and her cleaning services. Her team was able to get the job done very quickly which we appreciated. Moving forward there are probably a couple of things we will ask to have cleaned as well but I do not fault Sheryl at all for that, if anything I blame the boyfriend for not thinking of it since I wasn't there. :) Because we have no fully unpacked, it's difficult to give a true evaluation because I know it's difficult to clean around some of those boxes and piles so I think once we are completely unpacked and I'm able to be there to meet with the team directly, I'd be able to give a more thorough evaluation. For this first one however, we were definitely please and look forward to working with them again. We are still waiting on feedback for some of the projects we had inquired about on the construction side so I'm not able to provide feedback on that at this point.

Jon was incredible. He took great pride in his work and sought perfection. It took longer than originally planned. But, a few more days were well worth the incredible results, especially when we consider the added hours he did to overcome the damage done to out kitchen cabinets from over 40 years of cooking and having been scrubbed with various cleaners. Jon did much of the work himself and worked late into the evening to finish up. On the last day he was assisted by Casey. In just a few days, I have already recommended him to neighbors.

I have nothing but positive things to say about Mark. I had an island cabinet that was sunken in. He arrived promptly to give an estimate and gave me a detailed proposal of what he would do. He was very efficient and knew what he was talking about. He was very good about communicating about his arrival on the day he did the work. He arrived and went straight to work. Mark ended up replacing the damaged cabinet floors with plywood and vinyl tiles. The end result is a far more sturdier cabinet floor and I am very pleased with the results. Mark was very pleasant to work with and I would highly recommend him.

Jeff was great. I can't say enough good this about this hard working man. Jeff contacted me for repairing a wood floor in our family room/hearth room. The previous owners laid new hard wood down but only took the wood to the hideous built in bookcase/entertainment center. My solution was to rip out the cabinets and patch the floor. Like most home improvements, nothing goes the way it's supposed too. Jeff was great at solving the problem with the floor and stayed late to finish the project before he went home. He came back two days later to finish putting up the trim and modifying the fireplace mantle. I'm so very pleased with his workmanship that I'm going to ask him back for other areas in the home. He does a great job and so respectful to you, the home and your thoughts.

We interviewed several remodelers. We believe Dave Braughton gave us custom cabinets at production cabinet costs. Dave was good to work with, he handled changes/revisions without stress or excessive add on charges. Dave/Dresm Design takes pride in his work and it shows in the finished product. We would hire Dave/Dream Design again!

I would definitely recommend Russ's work. He always works in whatever I need very quickly and quality work. So far, I have had my roof replaced, garage door and opener installed, dry wall work, kitchen cabinets replaced, ice maker line ran, bathroom exhaust fan installed and several other misc. handyman jobs. Trustworthy and beat the other quotes from other providers for job's quoted.

Total Home Solutions did a basement remodel for our family- Shane and his guys bid against 2 other organizations and were the best bid we got. I was blown away at the work they did. The old owners of my home had started the basement and put Shane and his team in a bad spot to start form, but you would never know that when looking at the finished product. Due to the space we had I had some custom requests to maximize the basement and none of my friends can believe the cabinets were custom made- Thanks Shane- We love our new basement-

Sally took my kitchen design and improved it 100%. My kitchen looks like it came out of a magazine. Her prices for custom Amish-made cabinets are lower than you can get at Lowes. This was not like work. It was really fun from start to finish.

Scope of work: KDZ (DeAngelo Howard) has worked on multiple remodeling projects for me and my husband for more than 5 years including: 1) Rehab of our rental property to include removal of old kitchen cabinets, counters, and sink; remodeling of bathroom including reconfiguring the dry wall around the tub shower, installed new wall tiles, replacement of new sink and toilet; painting in the bathroom. This rehab project is still ongoing and will include kitchen and bathroom floor tile replacement and repainting of the whole house (2 bedroom bungalow). 2) Personal residence: removed and replaced bathroom sink and counter top, removed and installed new mirror cabinet; removed and installed new toilet. Created a sculptured ceiling, painted walls; removed old floor tiles and installed new tiles. 3) Reconstructed a 14'x20' attached deck, including replacing all of the 2x4 support lumber and deck flooring and rails. 4) Painted eves around the ranch-style house. In each case, KDZ performed each project in a thoroughly professional and satisfactory manner. Mr. Howard is highly creative and a very good worker; he has an excellent eye for designs and colors. He is highly recommended for the projects he has done for us; we will use him again.

We hired them to put all of our kitchen cabinets together and installed. It was great working working with them. Simple and straightforward pricing. Once the appointment was set up, they arrived and did what they needed to do to make it all happen within the promised time frame. Would use them again for a project of this scale.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

    Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

    How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

    How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

    Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

    • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
    • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
    • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
    • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
