Darryl moved furniture and hauled away unwanted items from the basement. He painted the Kitchen and cabinets, a tasteful green and the cabinets and trim white, he sure made it Pop. Darryl cleaned the Gutters, which had screens that he removed and scoped out the gunk. I cannot say enough about Darryl and his professionalism, eye for every detail of his work, his on-the job continuity. He approaches each job with a plan and follows through until completion. Darryl brings more than Handyman to his work, he's has very good decorating ideas as well. Anyone who hires Darryl has just done themselves a great JOB.

My experience with Xtreme Cleaning Service was phenomenal! Hollie accommodated with my schedule on very short notice and left my apartment sparkling! She paid attention to all the small details- like cleaning the baseboards and cleaning any cobwebs on the top of the walls! Hollie left my apartment cleaner than it was the day I moved into it! She was friendly and professional and I would definitely call her again in the future!

I have a large home with over 150 panes to be cleaned. Brian arrived on time and by the end of the day every window in my home was sparkling clean inside and out. He also washed all of my outdoor lights and they look wonderful, too! Price was reasonable for the amount of work needed. I highly recommend ABS Services.

Can't say enough about Myers Construction did a total inside remodel for us. Steve is fantastic communication was great and he did everything I asked even when I changed things at the last minute. He went above and beyond in helping me with odds and ends to. He has great ideas and gives you a vision of how things will look. Always on time and cleaned up after the days work. For the amount of work we had done the price was more than reasonable. Kerri and Nikki were also great to work with. Everyone is hard working and pleasant to be around. They will be back in the spring to complete windows and paint on the exterior. Thanks for making our house beautiful.

Travis and his crew did a wonderful job installing a couple of concrete walkways at our property. His crew was very pleasant, courteous, and easy to talk with. I have no experienced with concrete projects so I have little to compare with, however, I would have liked the area cleaned up a bit more after the work was completed - some residual concrete on fencing, vinyl siding, wood left in the yard, and tape on the window. Overall, we are very happy with the work and we plan to use this company for our next concrete project - concrete pad for a steel building.

I was very pleased with the work performed (replaced two window panes). One of the windows was part of a large 6 panel window and the other was a small window in the sun room. The large pane was, pardon the pun, a real pain to remove. It appeared that the entire 6 panel window system was assemble and then placed on the large opening. The guys figured out how to get just the single pane out and the new glass was promptly installed. For the smaller window in the sunroom, it took them maybe 30 minutes total. They did a much nicer job than a previous contractor I used for the same size windows last Summer.

Wow - I can't say enough good things about John / Jessup Homes. He was an EXCELLENT communicator, arrived on time, and exceeded my expectations with the project I needed help with (hanging curtain rods on a series of angled windows). Some of the rods I bought were too long and instead of leaving the project half-complete, John's smart thinking found a way to make them work. He truly went out of his way using his own supplies to help me. I will most definitely call Jessup Homes the next time I need help and I would strongly recommend him to anyone.

We have used Columbus Custom Builders for a number of years. They fitted our kitchen and recently completed fitting our windows. There was some confusion over the window finishings but they were attentive and quick in finishing them how we asked. We have recommended them to others because they are reliable and do a good job. They are approachable and tell you succinctly and honestly what is needed

About

Smarter Windows was founded under the idea that buying replacement windows should be easy. We strive to deliver the best products and experiences at the lowest possible prices, all while minimizing the time required from you, the homeowner. In a marketplace where convenience is king, why does purchasing windows seem so difficult? We asked ourselves the same question and came to the realization that the old way of doing things simply doesn't cut it. Often times, companies will charge 3 to 6 times over cost of installation and the windows themselves. They use salespeople and a long, drawn-out sales process to justify their high prices, but at the end of the day, there is only so much a window can be improved. The bottom line is that consumers are being gouged, and we're here to change the game.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
