We needed a refrigerator valve replacement, and Adam (and his team at Greatful Plumber) was able to schedule our visit within two hours of our call! They work with a phone system that keeps you updated on every step of the process (verifies appointment, lets you know when they are on their way, etc.). They were very friendly, professional and took care of our issue in less than an hour! They aim to please and I will trust them again with any plumbing issues we may have!

Willie has now completed two jobs for us. He was responsive and reliable through the whole process. One of the jobs was fixing a leak in a shower that had been badly installed by someone else and involved removing and repairing a damaged ceiling. The other was repairing basically all the plumbing in a small house after the electricity was turned off and all the pipes froze. He was great to work with through the whole thing, and really put a lot of time and effort into figuring out everything that was wrong and fixing things in the way that made the most sense. His prices were very fair, and he clearly cared a lot about making sure the work was done well. He went above and beyond and even repaired other things he noticed were wrong. I would definitely hire him again and am happy to finally have a go-to plumber. Highly recommend. Thanks, Willie!

We had a kitchen sink plumbing job that spiraled out of control and required just enough countertop and cabinet work than most local plumbers would take it on. Larry responded to our post quickly and we accepted his bid. Our awful, stained, fiberglass built-in sink had a busted faucet and the amateur plumbing underneath meant we couldn't reach the faucet to replace it without destroying it. We took the opportunity to replace the sink with a stainless steel farmhouse sink of our dreams. Larry chopped out the old one, refit all the plumbing, installed a new faucet, refit the garbage disposer, and cleaned up in 5 hours, exactly as quoted. He was done on time and saved us a bunch of money on new countertops. The wife can't stop bragging about the new sink and the extra space underneath due to the professional pipefitting.

I had a very pleasant experience working with Michael. I was particularly impressed with his strong work ethic and extremely reasonable pricing. If you are looking for a hardworking, trustworthy, dependable plumber who is priced extremely well, Michael fits the bill. You don't get "brand" or "professionalism" of a big-name plumbing company but you save a significant amount of money. Service Plus was going to charge me $800 to install my water heater, Lowes and Home Depot provided me estimates around $600; Michael completed the install for just over $200 for everything--parts, labor, removal of old water heater. Michael earned every penny! It was refreshing to work with someone who understood the meaning of hard work and offered exceptional value. I enjoyed working with Michael and would definitely hire him again for future plumbing jobs. Highly recommend!

Zach was the perfect guy for the job for us. Our plumbing situation went from feeling like an impossible disaster to a simple clean up once he showed up. He is professional and knowledgeable but still able to walk us through why our sewer was backing up into our house calmly and clearly. He was totally up front about the potential scope of the problem and the steps he'd take to fix it. He quickly responded to all my questions and even patiently talked through options I was thinking through. A great guy all around and definitely somebody you want to have around when it's hitting the fan. Thanks Zach!

My water heater finally died after 18 years. I called FlowPro and Ron came out later that morning to provide an estimate to replace it. After discussing several options, I decided to go with a tankless water heater in place of a traditional gas water heater. The technician was able to come out that afternoon to replace it and I was able to take a hot shower that night! Very impressed with their prompt service and everyone was professional, from the office gal to the technician. I highly recommend them!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

    • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
    • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
    • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
