He was great at communicating back to me right away, he came with an assistant, they were both courteous enough to take their boots off at my door, to not dirty my home. They were prepared to do the job right away, since I had several things to be fixed he gave me an even better price. My husband and I are very happy with the installation of our new bathroom sink and faucet, and the other work they did. We will definitely be hiring Red's Plumbing again!

Bradley was amazing! I called him out for what I thought was a simple job, but my situation was much worse. Bradley walked me through options and costs along the way and was able to complete the whole job the same day for a more than fair price. He even fixed a leaky garden hose connection outside, and my kitchen faucet! He truly goes above and beyond. I won't call another plumber again!

Master Bathroom remodel done with expertise: demolition, tub, shower, tile, vanity, lights, sink, tile, grout, paint, hardware, faucets, valves. I had a contractor bail on the project, after doing the demolition and building the room (incorrectly). Ron came to the rescue with a professional demeanor, prompt arrival to quote, and explained the work involved. Not only was Ron able to work within the conditions, he reconfigured the other contractor's work to not require a complete demolition again. Ron has a knowledge of building codes and built the bathroom properly, including: reframe shower cubicle, laid concrete backer boards, repaired tub surround, installed tile straight, even, consistent, connected plumbing, electric, fixtures (very heavy stuff, but he handled it well with his colleague). I trusted Ron in my home, with the deposit and he was enjoyable to converse with and let me know in great detail about the project (before performing work). I'm pleased with the results and everything is still working great after 3 months, no leaks and nothing has broken.

Raul and his team did an awesome job on my apartment. I just needed it to be repainted and have the shower re-caulked and the door fixed. Everything was done perfectly and it was priced very reasonably. They worked with my schedule and got everything done quickly. They even put all of my furniture back and hung everything up when they were done. I'll definitely work with them again!

Marek laid tile, placed drywall, and placed a vanity where I asked. I had a small issue with the placement of an outlet, but everything went very well. I would hire him again.

I hired Mark to complete the majority of a bathroom remodel. I hired his team to install drywall, mud and tape the drywall. I also had him tile the shower and the floor. Mark also did the shower plumbing, installed a new tub, fixed a bad tub drain, hung two doors, installed casing and framed a window. Mark's price was reasonable. He was not the cheapest, nor the most expensive. But his communication led me to hiring him. The job was expected to take 5 days, however he ended up finishing on a Saturday. He is honest, very giving with advice and does good work. He is a jack of all trades and if I ever need a hand, I now have contractor I can trust. I recommend him to my friends if they need some work done.

I hired Jose because I needed front front and rear doors replaced. I must say he was very professional in the installation of both doors. He ensured that everything was done to my satisfaction. I was so pleased, I asked him to finish up a pocket door in one of my closets. Very satisfy with all the work and would highly recommend his services.

We used Aaron to do some work in our 2 flat; painting, fixing railings on back stairs, installing new shower head, and new sink faucet. He worked around the times that my tenants would be home. We will be using him again for some additional work. Very professional, emailed receipts, gives quotes, etc.

My wife and I have had Jeremy complete multiple projects on our home. Clearly, we are confident in the work he does, because we’ve asked him back over and over again! Jeremy helped replace and paint the trim in our entire first floor, he installed drywall in a custom closet we had built, and he’s installed many light fixtures that required extensive electrical work. He will give you a fair quote and do a great job, without having you worry about the quality of work being done. I always feel relaxed when I hire him for a job because I know he will be professional and his work is excellent. I definitely would recommend Jeremy for your next home improvement project. We will be re-doing our entire kitchen soon and using him for sure! He can do anything!

Roman just completed a bathroom and kitchen remodel in my condo, and I am so happy! In the kitchen he and his partner assembled and installed cabinets, tile floor, glass tile backsplash, faucet, a light fixture and appliances. In the bathroom they installed tile floor, marble tile in the shower and a vanity. Everything is beautiful! It is evident that Roman has many years of experience and is skilled in numerous trades. Roman is very professional and his work is precise and clean. He is reliable and always showed up when he said he would. He has great design ideas and had a quick solution for the few minor problems that popped up. I will use him for any other work I need done in my condo. I highly recommend Roman!

Larry Adams gutted and renovated a bathroom for us. He completed it beautifully and in a timely manner. His work is neat and meticulous and he cleans up the workspace everyday. He removed the old tub, toilet, sink and tiles. He removed the walls down to the studs. He installed the new walls, new tub, tile, sink and toilet. He installed all new shower head and faucets. I will have him renovate our other bathroom! I highly recommend Larry!

Jim did a fantastic job repairing my patio doors, re-installing an existing window, repainting the condo, re-installing/repairing doors. He also found some plumbing that needed to be fixed and provided a fair estimate and great work getting the repairs taken care of. He has great experience with condo associations and management companies so working with the local maintenance team and association management went smoothly. I thought that Jim's prices were fair and I highly recommend Jim and would do business with him again.

Originally hired to paint. He painted all the interior of 6 room bi-level house, patched and sanded all cracks and holes perfectly. Painted utility room floor. He then installed a laminate floor in 24x15 bedroom and closet and was able to remove molding and quarter round and reattach it without ruining it. He installed new faucet and drain in bathroom. Put in new drain in kitchen. Secured 2 large evergreens in front yard that were leaning and did some outside painting, fixed a shower door that was in terrible condition and made it look beautiful, replaced broken ceramic tile and grouted, moved and installed new water heater and ran all new lines, installed new liner in flue pipe, and did many miscellaneous repairs as I found them while working in the house. He knew his limitations and would call in someone who was in that line of work to help him if he needed it. Always went beyond what the average person would do today. He was on time the majority of time. I have absolutely no suggestions to improve the work because it was all done better than anyone could have done it.

We had PR Contracting re-do a 1994 master bath in a townhome. It was covered w/mirrors on 3 walls, had a whirlpool tub and a plastic shower. It is now amazing. It was quite an undertaking but PR Contracting made it look easy. The owner, Phil, hires only the very best sub-contractors (plumbers, tile installers, etc). Truly the industries experts. We Re very happy w/our bath & others say it took like a spa!

I am so pleased with the services that Chris and his partner provided. They were so professional. They redid my basement bathroom, flooring and tile in the shower, and a new vanity and sink was installed. I am so happy about it!! His prices were fair and he was able to get it done in a timely matter. It's so hard looking for a good carpenter that gives you quality work! I already contacted him to come and do my upstairs bathroom this summer! Highly recommend these guys!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

      • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
      • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
      • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
      • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
      • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

      • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
      • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
        • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
      • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
      • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
      • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
