After contacting with my plumbing needs, the professional duo arrived one hour later. They were dressed very presentable, were extremely polite, and exuded a high level of plumbing knowledge. Efficiently, they diagnosed the problem and completed a main roding of my kitchen pipes. They cleaned up after themselves and even let me pay via Chase Pay. Overall, I am very happy with the services I received and will contact them in the future if any plumbing needs should occur. I would rate them 10 stars!

Great work, he rewired and installed my Nest and also did some great plumbing. Boris was dedicated when we ran into a challenging situation and really stands behind his work.

Daniel was friendly, easy to schedule with and very responsive through the app, which I appreciated. The plumbing repairs needed were way more extensive than I had originally thought, which I understand. But I would have liked it better if he kept us in the loop of what was going on and talked us through what he was doing. There were several other plumbing problems that resulted after the repair that he did which is most likely a result of old pipes (not a direct cause from the repair I hope) but he did not leave us with much advice or reassurance that he would follow up. Because the pricing was higher than the quote we agreed upon over Thumbtack, I requested an invoice - but his notes were a little hard to read and there was not too much of a breakdown for his costs. He did end up being open to negotiating the pricing, which I appreciated since he had not really kept us in the loop of what work was being done and that costs would be much higher than originally agreed.

We had a shutoff valve spring a leak and also a problematic shower faucet. Don took the time to thoroughly survey the problems via phone and scheduled a prompt time (the day before Thanksgiving) and arrived even earlier than he scheduled. Once here he went straight to work and was done within 40 minutes of hitting the door. He's very open, honest, and skilled. He will not charge you without 1) explaining to you 2) letting you know the steps if you want to go it alone and 3) showing you receipts for parts. If you have a plumbing issue, do yourself a favor: stop worrying and call Don. Thanks Don!

Love that they were willing to come out and check out my plumbing issue before giving me a quote, especially since I had no clue what was actually wrong besides that something is leaking. Ended up hiring them for a few projects and I'm so glad I did. So professional, friendly, competitive pricing, and great work. Thanks!

Master Bathroom remodel done with expertise: demolition, tub, shower, tile, vanity, lights, sink, tile, grout, paint, hardware, faucets, valves. I had a contractor bail on the project, after doing the demolition and building the room (incorrectly). Ron came to the rescue with a professional demeanor, prompt arrival to quote, and explained the work involved. Not only was Ron able to work within the conditions, he reconfigured the other contractor's work to not require a complete demolition again. Ron has a knowledge of building codes and built the bathroom properly, including: reframe shower cubicle, laid concrete backer boards, repaired tub surround, installed tile straight, even, consistent, connected plumbing, electric, fixtures (very heavy stuff, but he handled it well with his colleague). I trusted Ron in my home, with the deposit and he was enjoyable to converse with and let me know in great detail about the project (before performing work). I'm pleased with the results and everything is still working great after 3 months, no leaks and nothing has broken.

Hired to work on plumbing including garbage disposal and install a new faucet. Was able to wrap up the job in a little over an hour. Called later that day to say there was a small leak and came back that night to fix the issue.

Very honest! I Wanted to change my ejector pump even though it is still working. They inspected what I had and told me there was no need to replace. They could have easily just replaced it and charged me for the service even though it was not needed. I will be using them for any future plumbing needs!

Roosevelt got my job in at the end of what I’m sure was a long work day which was helpful, as my job could have caused damage to my ceiling if left to wait longer. Him and his wife were in and out quickly to reseat my toilet and problem solved the error of the last plumber. He said he would follow up in a couple days to make sure the seal was holding. I appreciate that he will follow up on his work. He also warrantied the work for a year. Although very nice, I hope I don’t see him again until I hire him for another job. Thanks for the good work sir!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
