Ellen was a pleasure to work with, every step of the way. She took time to research the positions and schools listed on my resume and developed a show stopping resume. Highly responsive, Ellen is a true professional with a talent for resume writing. When the final draft arrived, I was amazed at how she illuminated my skills and experience. My goal was to take a huge career leap and Ellen’s resume landed me several interviews that resulted in multiple job offers. Eventually, I accepted an executive level position that is several levels above my previous position. Fast, friendly, and work every penny. Do yourself a favor, invest this money in your future and let Ellen make you shine!

Sandy has done a terrific job. She is an excellent writer, but, more than that, she takes the time to figure out exactly what your goals are, and then tailors her writing to be in line with those goals. She is also prompt, dependable, and charges extremely reasonable fees. I highly recommend Sandy for your writing needs!

Our first meeting was great. He is a conscientious tutor. He prepared some practices for me to learn about my skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. And then he will customize a plan for me, according to my performance in our first meeting.

I was frustrated with progress on my dissertation when I was gifted time with a dissertation coach. Stephanie Latkovski was responsive, attentive, insightful, and incredibly helpful. She got me past being stuck and feelings of inadequacy to focusing on the job to be done. Not only did I begin to feel better about myself as a writer, I became more productive. Three years after I graduated with my doctoral degree, my dissertation was published. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such a great writing coach!

I initially experienced Tammy's writing coaching as a participant in her "Crafting and Inspirational Blog" class. Her teaching style is dynamic and experiential, giving great examples for the concepts she teaches and then encouraging her students to try their hand at it. Her follow-up and suggestions are always beneficial. My experience with that class was so great that I hired Tammy. We meet over the phone weekly to edit my newsletter articles. When I am struggling to find the words for what I want to say, she asks exactly the right questions to enable me to find those words. And, when I'm having a hard time coming up with a topic, we brainstorm ideas. In addition, Tammy writes a weekly newsletter with writing tips that help solidify what I am learning. The process is always full of learning and fun. Tammy is absolutely fabulous in every way!

Sheila is a professional teacher with many years of experience teaching English from preschool to high school level. I worked with Sheila in two educational institutions and really appreciated her outstanding level of English, her genuine passion for literature and her in-depth knowledge of the international Cambridge language exams. Her individual approach to each student makes her ideal for giving English classes online.

I have hired Vanessa Rico for two separate projects in the past month, and both she executed flawlessly. The first project she helped me with transcription and the second project she did some online prospecting work for me--identifying prospects for outreach for my small business. Her writing skills, her people skills, her attention to detail, and her ability to meet deadlines are superb. I look forward to hiring Vanessa for more freelance work in the future!

I recently published a book, and Janet was an absolute DREAM to work with as the editor! Seriously. My greatest concern with this project was wanting to see and hear my voice come through on the pages. Janet made that happen! I could hear my voice come to life. Not only was the finished manuscript flawless, no errors, but there was also a TON of amazing feedback and respect of my vision for the book. Her feedback was honest and constructive, a passionate critique of my writing style, and there were even a few laughs for the both of us. What a joy to work with! AND, Janet even went above and beyond to create a unique and personalized video tutorial to guide me through the process of reviewing her edits in Word. Can't say enough to express how happy I am with the results of working with Janet!

Competent resume writing from an HR professional is offered. I have a BS in Human Resources and an MA in Communication. I have worked in the employment field for 20 years as well as university career centers. I love helping people with their resumes and find great joy in knowing I helped someone secure employment, financial stability, and a successful future. I have an extreme eye for detail, correct grammar, and proofreading, as well as ensuring proper tense is used throughout the resume. Don't describe the job you had five years ago as "I answer the phones and greet customers" when it should be "I answered the phone and greeted customers". I can help you avoid these and other resume pitfalls.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
