Tom has been handling all of our tax work since 1992, from monthly sales tax filings to a full scale IRS audit. He was with me while an IRS examiner spent two and a half days at our office, answering questions and providing backup material. All ended well as Tom said it would, because our returns were done properly, and all supporting documentation was available. We have been happy with the Hodge Group for over 20 years, and use them for everything for our bookkeeping, accounting, and tax prep. Two thumbs up!!!!

I was at a loss as to how to find a good accountant for tax season that wasn't in a big box chain, and just stumbled onto Thumbtack through a Google search. What luck, because Thumbtack put us in touch with Gerald with Tax Busters, and he was excellent. Gerald was very personable and took time to walk me and my husband through our tax return and explain exactly why we owed what we did. He also advised us on changes we could make to our retirement planning that would positively impact our tax situation. His knowledge and customer service are excellent and I would absolutely recommend him to anyone who is looking for tax help.

He is very knowledgeable of the ins and outs of income taxes having retired from the IRS. He also is a retired military officer and taught in the accounting field at the local university. He has a vast background for all of your accounting needs. He gives honest answers to any and all questions and does not pass judgement on whatever your tax liability is.

Prosperous Accounting Services was excellent in helping me prepare and file my federal and state taxes this year. In the past I was always cheap and would try and do them myself. After working with Michelle I realized that it's less headache on me and more money in my pocket by having her do this for me. She was thorough, efficient, professional and quick! She also gave me great financial advice for the future. I will definitely continue to work with her!

A blessed business owner and taxpayer due to G&G Income Tax! I have been working with the firm for the last three years and I appreciate everything that Gery has done for me for the past 3 years! I file my business returns, as well as my quarterly estimate taxes, and my personal taxes with G&G Income Tax. I have been thinking about whether to outsource the payroll vs doing it myself, and I may do it next year depending on how busy I am . My business has been growing and Gery has been a fantastic resource in terms of advise and coaching on how to grow my business and stay compliant. She gives me a list of deductions and expenses that I can take advantage of given my business line while staying compliant with the IRS. A grateful thank you and I look forward to working you again!

HIPPS INCOME TAX DIV reviewed all my company's Quickbooks entries for the past year then assembled the Federal and State corporate tax returns neatly and professionally. With this being my first tax return with the new business I was delighted how Denise explained my accounting and tax situation and demonstrated expertise in her field answering the questions and concerns I presented regarding my business. I definitely recommend HIPPS INCOME TAX DIV and I will be returning to them for my business' tax and accounting needs in the future. Andrew Berry RAM Property Investments Inc.

Our company is very fortunate that Halloran and Reilly LLC were introduced to us six years ago. They have helped our company grow during a struggling economy; provided guidance and education to in house accounting associates, evaluated and helped implement tax strategies that have been instrumental in the growth of our company. For many years our company worked with accounting and tax professionals that “just plugged our number in boxes.” Halloran and Reilly stand out because their team of professionals takes the time to evaluate a business and propose suggestions for implantation. This is all done with full access. We actually get to talk with our accountant … NOT an assistant. They have provided our company a sounding board to deal with issues, offered unbiased suggestions and solutions in a very professional and timely manner, and have always been reasonable and fair in their consulting and CPA fees. Moving forward our company looks forward to a long prosperous relationship with Halloran and Reilly LLC. In closing I would like to add; yes, the internet virtual relationship really works well! Not only did she work with everything I needed, she did it so quickly and deftly that I was legitimately shocked. Her office was slightly difficult to find, but she was friendly and made me feel as though she appreciated the effort I had put into gathering and organizing my tax information. I will definitely use her services next year.

So far so good. Khalid was very responsive and quick. As long as the IRS accepts, and doesn't penalize me I'm one happy customer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

  • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
  • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
  • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
  • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.
