David was originally certified in 2000 as a hypnotherapist. Since that time he has been a freelance hypnotherapist helping actors, dancers, boxers and people from all walks of life refocus habits and behaviors to improve their lives. He was hired for three years as a clinical hypnotherapist with Positive Changes in Glendora, California, and remained with the company until it closed. He continues his freelance business to this day. A large percentage of professional hypnotherapists use prewritten 'scripts' to help clients with standard issues. David creates individual scripts focused on specific issues and incorporating the clients personal and specific cues to ensure an effective session. I am an actor by trade and my focus on behaviors and psychology was a natural transition to a field that helped people improve their mental states. Acting is amazing and something I truly enjoy doing, but nothing matches the hugs and tears of a client whose life you have changed by creatively creating a hypnotic session that deeply touches and effects them. I love being able to help a client see the issues attach to bad habits and even better help them solve it.See more

Dee H. says, "Absolutely incredible!!! I just got out of the mental health hospital, was there for 10 days. I reached out to Tony and I’m so glad I invested in hypnotherapy , believed in myself and the process. 7 sessions was life changing. Tony is extremely easy to talk to and listens to understand not just hear you. I felt incredibly just after 1-2 sessions. I have tools that are easy to use and will continue to implement them when life gets xxx. I may keep getting sessions a few times a month. I’m worth feeling alive again. My concentration is 100% better from less anxiety. Less depression and so much happier. Before I went into the hospital I was in an extremely rough place, self harming multiple times. I wish I would have know about Tony before going to the hospital. We are worth feeling great!!! Tony, thank u from the bottom of my heart. You are a gift"See more

Jeffrey G. says, "I feel very fortunate to have found Munjal as I felt a true connection, something I feel is critical when working with any health professional. My first attempt at finding a hypnotherapist resulted in no reply, so I was grateful when Munjal contacted me immediately after I indicated my interest. His bio seemed perfect for my situation and our initial intake interview solidified my belief that he was going to be able to help me. Over each of our five sessions (following the initial contact) he demonstrated a real attention to detail, a tremendous amount of compassion, and an ability to get me to relax and work with him on improving my life. I was probably a bit skeptical that this could be accomplished remotely through a Zoom session but I believe it was more impactful therapy because I was more comfortable and able to relax more readily in my own home. Munjal has a calming effect when speaking and sometimes lets silence do the talking during hypnotherapy. I generally looked forward to the sessions, especially when he related aspects of his own life that dovetailed with my specific condition and the approach he was taking to address it. He has given me a number of relaxation/stress reduction techniques and I plan to incorporate them into my daily life. I highly recommend Munjal as a hypnotherapist and would not hesitate to call him in the future."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines.

Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Tension headaches

  • Alopecia areata

  • Asthma

  • Phobias

  • Insomnia

  • Addictions

  • Bedwetting

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Labor and delivery

  • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)

  • Stress

  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

  • Cancer-related pain

  • Weight loss

  • Eating disorders

  • Warts

  • Indigestion (dyspepsia)

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

  • Smoking cessation
