My Interior Design firm has often required the services of an architect to accomplish our client’s goals. Stephen Dunakoskie became our go to firm several years ago because of the quality and professionalism he contributed to our projects. He is honest and dependable, detailed and thorough, creative and talented. He always goes the extra mile to perform in the best interest of our clients. I would highly recommend him for any size projects you may be ready to successfully achieve.

The Best! Wonderful! Excellent! Easy! Stress free! Working with Dana was the best experience I have ever had! She provided a service I didn’t know I needed. Being pregnant with my first child, of course I wanted it ALL! I wanted to create a room that was inviting, soothing, and different from every other room in our home. When I initially met Dana, I was simply going into her store to look at a chair and furniture samples...I got sooooo much more! It was a Saturday afternoon on a beautiful day and I wasn’t in a hurry. Dana was working with a client when I went into the store. She was so knowledgeable, friendly, calm, patient, accommodating, and most importantly—appeared to be in tune with her client’s ideas. I found myself enjoying the chair I came to see and watching her work. I have never waited with ease to talk to someone, but that’s exactly what I did. When it was my turn, Dana gave me her undivided attention. I walked in there wanting to view a chair and walked out with a concept for my nursery, furniture picked out and an appointment for a full room design. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Dana was responsive, knew what I was looking for, friendly and extremely open. She was also very timely. I absolutely love the nursery. It is the best space in the house! It looks like a picture out of a magazine. Dana introduced me to vendors I had never heard of. Everyone who comes to visit loves the nursery. And, my baby enjoys his room too. He calms down upon sitting in the room and we enjoy mommy/son time. Thank you Dana for helping me prepare for my first child and giving me an unforgettable experience!

We hired Eliza and Edison to do a color consultation on our new home purchase. the home was built in 1994, and still sporting a lot of the original builder grade paint. The home had a cold and bland feel. Amy and Brian showed with a huge color selection and helped us pick colors to warm the house, to include all 4 bedrooms, office, family room, and kitchen. Their rate was very fare for the amount of time they spent with us. They were very patient as we changed our minds a couple times in the middle of the consult. On top of it all, they made the appointment the same day we contacted them, and the appointment was only a few hours after our initial contact! We definitely recommend them!

Natalie’s keen eye was invaluable as she helped us select color palettes and materials for both our kitchen and master bath remodels. We feel like she really listened and understood the style we were shooting for. We went with woodlook tile and a serene green in the master bath and achieved the spa resort feel we were hoping for. We are very happy with the finished products! We are in the process of trying to figure out which space to collaborate on next.

We hired Carlos the "Professional Painter" to paint our living, dining, and sun-room. Mr. Carlos is an extremely nice guy and a straight shooter. The painters were on time, which was hugely appreciated, and they did excellent work. We had some stripe work, trim work, and color blocking that was done to design specifics. To me, customer service is truly demonstrated when a company is polite and friendly and does detailed work in a professional manner. I was very happy with their service, overall. And, the paint looks fantastic! Hire Coloramma Painting...excellent pricing too!!! The Pillai's

I can't say enough good things about Rose, the quality of her work, and her professionalism. She helped guide me though a 2nd story addition both on the exterior and interior color choices. Rose brought the exact skills and design sense that I needed in order to bring the entire renovation together. I will be forever grateful to Rose and her amazing ability to choose the perfect color and material combinations as well as her obvious love of the design process!

I could not have had a better experience than working with the Creative Reflections Design Team! The professionalism and organization from start to finish was impeccable! Whenever doing projects like these I always expect some sort of unforeseen issue to arise but the process was seamless with Creative Reflections. I'm a busy professional with little free time. I knew how I wanted my bedroom to feel, and chose some colors to start with, but Creative Reflections did the rest. I spent a few minutes completing a well thought out questionnaire that asked all the questions I wouldn't have even thought of. Then a few short weeks later...BAM! I was in my dream bedroom, mouth agape, and drooling all over the little details incorporated into my Glam Caribbean Bedroom. I will definitely be setting up appointments for the rest of the rooms in my house! Thank you again, Creative Reflections!

What can I say, Laurie Stancil from Loudoun Interiors is amazing! We just love our house, Laurie's paint colors were perfect, and the way she designed our rooms were unbelievable! We still can't get over how beautiful the house looks! We love the art work that she had shown us, and the way everything goes together so well, we don't know how she does it? Laurie is very knowledgeable and easy to work with, also her staff of contractors are very nice, courteous, clean and on time. Thank you Dan!! All we can say is "We love our house!" Funny thing is it didn't cost us as much as we had plan, I was a little worried about that to be honest. Laurie made our house beautiful and below our original budget! (Amazing!) We still don't know how Laurie did it? The furniture is gorgeous! I especially like the bedroom, awesome! We absolutely give Laurie and Loudoun Interiors 5 stars and would gladly recommend Loudoun Interiors to anyone who needed any design work, paint colors, furniture to art work!! We love, love, love our house!!!

enjoyed working with Sharon for a lot of reasons. First off I found her very easy to work with. As soon as I started talking with her got a reassuring sense that she would be reliable and professional, and she was. She is highly organized and delivered concepts well within the agreed upon time frame. She responded quickly to emails and is an excellent communicator. Additionally I found that Sharon listened carefully to everything I said and wrote in emails and created her design concepts to address all the things that came up. Here efforts were clearly very personalized to the specific goals I was trying to achieve with the redesign of my medical office reception area. Her concepts were well thought out and demonstrate a talent for color, themes, and accessories that I simply could never have come up with on my own. She was also very responsive to feedback on her concepts, and adapted accordingly. But she was not a "yes-man" either. She stood her ground on things she felt were important. In summary I highly recommend Sharon for anyone considering design services. While I hired her for a small business, her skills easily translate to a home setting. I would definitely hire Sharon again.

Victoria is very creative and very receptive to my requests for texture and colors. Victoria was very motivated to pull together my desires coupled with her vision. I've used her on one occasion and plan to use her again! She was very professional and personable. I've tried a few different decorators, but I've never has the success of getting the results I wanted when I explained what I had in mind until Victoria came along. She was able to put it together and more. My family and friends compliment her work all the time. Thank you so much Victoria!!

Paula has helped us with a variety of interior design projects throughout our entire house. While constructing our current house, Paula visualized placement of existing furniture, and helped select interior paint colors so transitioning from room to room was seamless. Once we moved in, she worked with us first to design our family room and kitchen. The results were stunning, and we get so many compliments. When we were ready, we moved on to the dining room and living room, where Paula helped select window treatments, area rugs, as well as reupholster some of my favorite pieces in updated fabrics. We are so happy. Not only does our house look polished, it is all being done on our time frame and budget. We can't wait to begin our next project. Thank you, Paula!

Chun-Fa is a very organized and thorough architecture & design professional. I would highly recommend him. The quality of his work is excellent and his attention to detail is superior. He is the type of individual that will not be satisfied unless he has exceeded your expectations and performed on the highest level. That takes a lot of the worry away from a project or renovation where there are always obstacles to overcome. He is a problem solver!

I worked with Chloe on two projects in NYC: my personal office 5yrs ago and more recently an art exhibition. For my office space she chose furniture pieces that not only had great atheistic, but great functionality, but also tailored to my stature and default posture. I was hesitant to commit to a "set decor", but she created design and fluid palette where I could switch out certain accessories and colors without compromising the overall theme...which was clean neutrals with metallic and wooden accessories. Chloe's approach is incredibly thoughtful and artistic. I relocated to a co-working space and I look forward to her services again very soon. - Brooke

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
