Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
How to Hire Construction Services
  1. 1. Define your needs and list the areas needing to be remodeled. Take into account the size of all rooms and come up with a price range for the entire project.

  2. 2. Hire a home inspector to help you identify hidden problems that may need repair. If you purchased the house, it is worth knowing the plumbing systems, gas lines and electrical wiring before the project begins.

  3. 3. Compare several reputable construction services and determine how long they have been in business. Ask for references to establish if past clients were satisfied with their services.

  4. 4. Validate your contractor's license and insurance coverage. Although your state might not require it by law, the company should have general liability coverage to protect you in case of damages.

  5. 5. Find out if the contractor has experience in the style you desire. Ask for sample plans and pictures of completed projects to gain a relative understanding of your contractor's services and capacity.

  6. 6. Determine if the contractor has industry involvement. The contractor should be a member of trade organizations to give you confidence that he or she is up-to-date on the current methods and trends.

  7. 7. Create time to tour some of the contractor's completed projects. Look for signs of attention to detail and quality construction. Also, consider the type of building materials and products that were used.
