Let me start off by saying that it has been an honor and privilege learning from Sam. He is an amazing singer and an incredible teacher! I had previously taken vocal lessons from another instructor, but I wasn't too glad with the teaching method. I began taking lessons from Sam after reading the positive reviews on his profile. After my first class with Sam, I knew that I had made a good decision. After a couple weeks, I've seen major improvements in my voice quality, breathing technique, and vocal dynamics. In addition, I've started to sing with more emotion and connect with songs at a level that I didn't know existed. I'm excited to continue learning from Sam and I cannot be happier! Sam's very knowledgeable in all aspects of music, and his experience with soul, jazz, blues, and contemporary music really resonates. I believe what makes Sam an amazing teacher is his ability to connect with his students - he's very passionate about teaching and he makes it his goal to take his students to the very top. I trust in Sam to help me reach my goal because I know that Sam trusts in me. If singing is your passion, I highly encourage you to take lessons from Sam - he will help you find your voice! - Gurpreet

After seeing Damon perform at venues and events in the area, we were very excited to hire his band for our wedding. We had an outdoor wedding with about 180 guest of all ages. After an initial meeting to discuss the evening, the band showed up and proceeded to rock the house right down to the ground! With music from every generation, all of the guests had an evening that they will remember forever. Damon learned our "first dance" song, rocked out a hardcore "Hava Nagila" and other cultural dance songs and even played my father in laws favorite tunes. People still talk about our big day and Damon and his crew were a huge part of the success. If you want to have an event that has has people dancing to the wee hours, Damon Forman is the guys for you!

Turned an outdoor wedding into a musical extravaganza! Simone was the music director for our backyard wedding on 8/31/14. Not only did she organize her own amazing band of musicians, but she integrated our musician friends into the festivities with grace and professionalism. She and her band mastered a range of musical styles from klezmer to high opera to bluegrass to jazz and chamber music. It was an event that we and all our friends will never forget. She managed the complexities of the venue, the weather and the varied personnel with aplomb. She has a permanent place in our hearts!

We weren't sure what to expect booking a band without having met them, but New Legacy Jazz Band was definitely worth it! They made our wedding so much more fun, with none of the typical wedding band cheesiness many come to expect. We were very impressed with the samples posted on their website, and even more so with the easy communication with our contact Alan. We could tell they had done this many times in the past - every time we sent a question (such as whether they could play music from a CD, or would be able to make announcements), he responded promptly and assured us that all of our needs were covered. The band was able to do everything we hoped for and more! We had 165 guests, and packed the dance floor even at 1 in the afternoon. We had been so worried about people not dancing that early, but the music was so good it was hard not to! In addition, Alan was friendly and personable at the mic making announcements and cuing the events of the afternoon, giving us exactly what we wanted despite the vague descriptions we had sent. We heard a LOT of compliments about the music from our guests, and are so glad we booked New Legacy for our wedding. We would recommend them in a heartbeat - the music was great, the energy was high, and they were so very easy to work with.

Jarrett was the music director for our wedding and we couldn't have made a better choice! Our ceremony was filled with songs from many different genres of music and Jarrett covered them all like the pro he is. Three years later our guests literally still talk about how amazing our wedding music was. Despite his incredible talent, Jarrett is down to earth and wonderful to work with and definitely someone you can trust. Ronald & Penny Greene

Christine Padua performed vocally and arranged music in multiple languages, styles and genres for my wedding ceremony and reception. She worked with a violinist, organist, and pianist. She modified a duet into a solo performance; shorten the length of music to match my ceremony, and arranged music for both piano and organ. She was fluid in her ability to go from contemporary, to classical, to opera. She sang fluently in Italian, French, and English, yet also knows multiple other languages. Padua arranged the song "La Vien Rose" in both French and English, which she performed as well. She is able to lead other musicians and instrumentalist because of her extensive understanding and knowledge of music theory, sight-reading, and education /experience of training operatically and playing piano. She truly is gifted in music in multiple facets and anyone who gets to learn or work with her is truly in for a treat. She is professional, friendly, and easy to work with. To this day, guests comment on how special the wedding was because of her beautiful performance. Padua has a moving spiritual voice that makes walking down the aisle feel dream like. My guests were moved to tears and awe stricken. Hire her before she becomes famous because it really is a once in a lifetime chance to work with such an amazingly talented artist before they"make it big." I can confidently say Escapade is the best wedding band I've ever seen. The quality of their musicianship and showmanship is outstanding. Not only are they excellent musicians but they are also wonderful people which makes working with them delightful especially durring chaotic parties. I've even found myself listening to songs they played that I hadn't heard before I saw them performed by Escapade. I can't recommend them strongly enough.

Frank played his sax wonderfully during my wedding. We arrived on time and worked with the pianist to make sure they performed in sync. Frank was also very flexible and understanding. Thanks Frank and I hope I will have the opportunity to work with you again. God bless you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
