We had a wonderful experience. Our dog is 13 and ailing. He would not allow anyone to touch him. Our groomer approached Seth very calmly, spending a lot of time gaining his trust. We were impressed and grateful. Highly recommend!

I took my cocker spaniel to get a haircut and she did a great job at cutter her hair. My dog seem comfortable around her and she even gave me tips on how to clean her ears properly. I would definetly recommend her. She was nice enough to let me stay during the process. I am very happy and most importently so is my dog!

Danielle was on time and eager to know about my dog. My dogs loved her and she knew exactly how to take care of them. Her depth of experience and knowledge was impressive. My 8 year old lab with black nails had the best trim of his life. I would highly recommend her and asked for her cards to refer to my friends.

Sarah Kiersch is a find! She is the original cat whisperer!. She is a mobile cat & dog groomer and her grooming of my long haired cat was flawless! She also has a studio where she grooms. I watched her grooming my cat and it's a lot of work! The lion cut Sarah gave her looks adorable. She clearly loves animals and knows how to calm them. And, she's a perfectionist!! Her fee is very reasonable ($80.00) and includes a dry oatmeal wash, soothing lotions, ear & teeth cleaning. I highly recommend her! ~Tybe Diamond, ibtybe@aol.com

Sarah did and exceptional job. Both my dogs were matted badly due to me putting them in a dog hotel for a month. She did a pretty decent job shaving them. No burns or cuts. Only areas for improvement I have: ear hair was largely untouched even though I asked to clean their ears.( I have no clue how groomers clean a dog's ears but my previous groomer removed them so I apologize in advance if you did clean their ears Sarah) And there's some armpit hair left. These, by no means, are complains because me and her both knew how bad their condition was I was so concerned after reading some of the reviews of other groomers, I'm glad I found her after what I got to experience. Hopefully, next grooming sessions will be easier on her since my dogs will be growing a fresh coat of hair. Thumbs up from Dunkin and Donut!

I am a life long dog owner. I have tried different businesses for grooming but I was looking for something different and something better for our current dog. Luca is our great Pyrenees - mix, rescue. He is an amazing dog but with his "guard dog" nature, he reacts when faced with dogs he is not familiar with. This trait meant we could not send him to the grooming options offered in the local pet stores. I found "Happy Paws" through "Thumb Tack" during a google search. I did not have to wait before I heard from Happy Paws. From the first contact, through my entire experience, I was communicating with the owner and then the groomer. Happy Paws has impressed me, as their years caring for animals has grown and developed into an amazing well executed business. They do not leave any stone un-turned. They have thought of everything. Every improvement and upgrade they have made, over the years, stems from the their interaction with their clients and the animals. Our first visit included a visit from the owner, Angela, and the groomer, Reena, who have worked together for years. Angela took the time to make sure I was comfortable with our first experience. I truly enjoyed her visit. She is very easy to talk with and so good at listening to all my question and/or concerns. As for the grooming experience, it deserves 5 stars as well. Luca is 76 lbs so I was so curious how the groomer would be able to bath and trim such a large dog - one who doesn't like water/baths. However, nothing fazed Reena. She handled Luca with confidence and as a result Luca had less anxiety because he knew he was being cared for and that Reena could and did handle him with great care. There is so much more I can share about our positive experience. But I will end with the fact that Luca looks beautiful and we cannot get enough of his soft fur and gorgeous looks! I am so grateful to Happy Paws and I HIGHLY recommend Happy Paws to every dog owner!!

After enrolling my dog in a group class and being told to "try again when she's older" I decided to hire Kevin to do private training sessions with my dog Winnie. In the few weeks we worked with him we saw a great improvement in our dog. She is able to do several commands, began to do some agility training and is more focused. Kevin was patient and very knowledgeable about dogs. Would definitely recommend!

I am so grateful to Julie of PuppyLovin for her work with my dogs and can not recommend her and her services highly enough! Julie loves and cares for my dogs like they’re her own, and they adore and respect her back. She has been taking care of them for 2.5 years now, providing them daily walks during the workweek that feature exercise, adventure, and training, and boarding them often at her place when I travel. Of the numerous area dog care providers I’ve used over the past 7 years, Julie is hands-down the best and I’ve not considered using anyone else since I met her. What she has provided that the others have not is knowledgeable, consistent training, in particular for my anxious rescue mutt. The change in him through Julie’s loving but disciplined care and expertise has been remarkable -- he’s become much more relaxed overall, and now welcomes comfort and takes my lead when he’s anxious rather than acting out. He’s truly a changed dog, which brings me such relief! Both of my dogs have also become much better walkers and much better behaved when in proximity to other dogs, all thanks to Julie, who has involved her own dogs in the training of mine, to great effect. Julie is very generous with her time -- she updates me on her progress and explains what I can do to ensure I get the same great results she does. I’m confident you won’t find a more caring, committed, and professional trainer to work with you and your dog(s)!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

    What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

    What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

    • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
    • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
    • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
    • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
    • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
    • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

    • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
    • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
    • Wash and dry: $60
    • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut
