We were very happy with Karim Maz/Secure Glass. We needed to have the cracked glass in two double glazed, double hung casement windows replaced. One of the two panes was cracked in each window. We didn't want to have to pay for replacing the entire window. Karim asked me to text photos of the type of window. Then he made an appointment to come look at them and give us a firm price. The online estimate was $155 (middle of 3 'bids') and the final price was $185 per window which still seemed very fair to us. The windows were ready in the 5-7 working days he told us it would take and we communicated by text to set up the installation. When he came the old double pane glass/internal mullion was removed and a new unit installed quite rapidly. He gave us a written guarantee of no condensation in the new units for 7 years. We were a very small job and I was really happy to find someone who would do it and do it so well.

Josh was prompt in getting in touch with me. I had several windows with problems but one that would not close was critical in this cold weather. He arrived when he said he would and not only looked at all the windows but repaired the double sash one. He advised which windows needed replacement and which ones could be repaired. Price was fair for prompt professional service. I would use this company again.

The technician worked very quickly to repair about four window panes that had broken over time (some original to the house with fragile glass, plus a couple vinyl windows). He originally told us (by phone) that he'd have to take one of the vinyl window panes to the workshop to reinstall new double pane glass, but in the end he was able to do it at my house. I would hire him again.

I had 2 broken double hung double-paned windows. They came and took measurements on a Saturday morning and provided me with a very reasonable estimate for the complete job. I anticipated the work would be completed a week later on the following Saturday but on Tuesday the windows were installed! One of the ordered glass windows had the wrong grid design, but I was assured that it would be replaced with the correct one and by Friday it was! The service was prompt and professional. The service professional was outstanding! I definitely recommend this company!

5th Gen Group was incredible. Christian quickly replied to my request, set an appointment to come over, was on time, could completely understand what I was looking for. He is different, thinks out of the box, creative and artistic. He leaves room to make adjustments as you go so that the project progresses from nice to spectacular. He enjoys making the project just a little bit different, he is an artist. While he was here I pointed out other items that needed attention and he was open to look at them and work them into this visit. How grateful I am for that. He was interested in re-purposing parts of the job such as installing a door we took down and putting it elsewhere in the house. He installed new windows, broke down walls, re-built walls, installed new pocket doors, replaced tile He helped with suggestions and installing fantastic new gym flooring and hung the mirrors. He and Jess, his partner, make the process easy. His crew with Hector at the helm (he became known to me as "Super Boy" and that says it all) is prompt, polite, clean, professional and very impressive. I am so thrilled that I found 5th Gen Group. I will use no other.

I purchased my dream car in 2005; after receiving multiple proposals to build a home/garage for my 1966 Mustang, my wife and I selected Perhe LLC to build our garage. After working with Glen Gordon and his contractors we are now fans for life. After Perhe LLC built our garage, we asked them to return multiple times to complete other projects which included: upgrading the electrical, install new windows, install storm doors and siding on the back of our house. This company is not just one-dimensional--it can handle diverse home improvement projects! Earl & Mary Randolph

Our 24 year dream was finally realized! We enjoy our back yard; flowers, birds and the forest-like setting. What we didn't enjoy was the heat when sitting outside. GFI made our dreams come true. We recently had a 15" x 16' sun-room addition built. We also added a flagstone walkway and patio area. The room addition has large picture windows on 3 sides; double door opening onto our new patio. We also had a second-story roof deck included with the addition which can be accessed by a new doorway from our master bedroom or a spiral staircase. We couldn't be happier. GFI's owner is top-notch; professional, knowledgeable, and he listens! He worked with us throughout the process. His employees are hard-working, professional and they care about the job they're doing. We've had other smaller projects done by GFI and they are, hands down, the BEST!

Instant response and then quite quick removal and replacement of three 10" x 10" thermal panels installed in the upper 9 over 9 double hung sash windows in the Historic District . The mullions had to be seamlessly replaced, and were. The spring side tracks in all our windows also needed to be rebalanced and cleared of over painting and now work as easily as they probably did when installed. I highly recommend Metro

Pamela did a whole house thorough final clean on our rehab project. Her willingness to please was apparent from our first meeting to scope out the work to the end final walk thru. She was always on time, & very pleasant to deal with. She is fussy about the details when it came to streak free windows and floors and countertops and shower doors. I will stress however that with Pamela as well as with any contractor you must double check all areas of importance and concern to make sure there was no oversight. Pamela returned and handle the punch list items superbly and held to her original price. I would do business with Pamela again and recommend her to my fellow rehabbers as well

Jay Tebri, All State Glass Company LLC changed the glass for my living room window. He arrived the first day to measure the window and installed the glass on the second day. The price he quoted was the final price which was cheaper then some of the other glass companies in the area. He also advised me of the 5 year warranty on the new glass. He was very professional and I would recommend him to a friend.

I'm loving my new windows! They're such a step up from what we had before (well, that's not hard considering they were the original metal windows from 1958 that wouldn't even open). We had 17 windows replaced in our house. We purchased windows that are double-pane and double-hung vinyl with a good u-score and a lesser-known brand than Pella or Anderson, so the price was right. With removal of the old windows and install. S.H. WINDOW AND DOOR was less than other estimates we got for the same windows. The salesman, Yonathan was very nice and not pushy like some other window salespeople we dealt with. There were 3 workers here on the day of the install, and they had their system down pat--one removes the window, one comes along with the flashing, the next installs the window, and then one guy comes back to add caulk. They were done in 7 hours and cleaned up after themselves.

I hired Jeff for a small project of installing lights and removing a bulkhead in my ceiling. Jeff broke down everything that was going to be involved in the work he was doing, from the cost, to materials, to time, and the reason he was doing it. Hiring Jeff was the best decision. He made the process easy, helped with ideas and did an amazing job. The first small project then turned into new floors, granite countertops, and more lights. The outcome is beyond what I would have expected. I look forward to doing more work with Jeff in the near future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
