Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
7 Steps to Hiring a Fence Contractor
  1. 1. Determine the area that requires fencing

Get an idea of the type of fencing that you prefer. Because most fencing companies charge by the foot, knowing your exact dimensions is a plus.

  2. 2. Get estimates

Ensure that each estimate includes the type of fence including size of poles, type of wire, width of panels, and gate sizes or styles. Determine how long the job is estimated to take.

  3. 3. Inquire about permits

Many companies pull permits prior to beginning a job, while some companies require the owner to purchase permits.

  4. 4. Stay safe

Ensure that the fencing company contacts each utility company to verify the location of buried wires or pipes.

  5. 5. Negotiate cleanup

Determine whether or not the company provides waste removal or cleanup services following the job.

  6. 6. Monitor subcontractors

If subcontractors are used for any portion of the fence installation, ensure that these workers are also licensed and insured. Keep a record of permits, insurance, and licensing with your estimates.

  7. 7. Schedule the work

Set up the date to begin work, and never pay for the entire installation up front. In general, fencing contractors require 20 percent to 50 percent of the total cost at the start of the installation.
