Vicki W. says, "So! I actually found Marvin, of Marvin's Landscaping by looking at what folks had to say through my local Next-door platform. I was looking for someone to mulch, edge, and weed several areas on my property before we hold a wedding in just a few weeks. I saw some great reviews for Marvin, and one that wasn't so nice. Let's be honest, anyone who has been in business for longer than a few years is going to have at least 1 or 2 negative reviews right?! I'm always open minded when it comes to the service industry....one bad review can really hurt even if the CUSTOMER was the problem. Moving on!...... I decided to get a quote from Marvin and another company (or 2:)..... 1st. Quoted me over the phone without seeing my property???? AND gave a RIDICULOUS VERY HIGH quote 2nd. Quoted in person and also gave a HIGH quote 3. Marvin's Landscaping....who contacted me within 10 minutes of me placing a request for info, scheduled a meeting, and came over 2 days later to walk the property. I unfortunately wasn't able to be present BUT I left a detailed list of what needed to be done and he gave a quote the same day! He also gave an option to add 6 additional bushes/trees to the quote which was super helpful. In the end, we hired Marvin's Landscaping and I could not be more pleased! The quote was reasonable, he scheduled to start on Monday (quote was given on a Thursday evening), he had a family emergency on Monday but promptly messaged me to let me know and requested to start the next day which he did! Marvin was on property the entire project for 2 days. Day 1 was Marvin and 1 helper, Day 2 was Marvin and 3 helpers. I checked on the project progress a few times, and EVERY time they were working hard which i was very pleased to see:) Marvin had a few questions during the process and he communicated with me when he did and left nothing to chance...very much appreciated this. The project was 95% complete in 1.5 days. The last 5% that wasnt finished was an out of the way Rock/Flower garden that was to be weeded, edged and mulched but was forgotten accidentally. My fiance noticed it the next day and I promptly texted Marvin to let him know it had been missed. Marvin apologized for the miss and immediately said he was sorry and would come back to take care of it. My fiance and I are THRILLED to have found Marvin. We are getting married in our yard in just 15 days and are now no longer embarrassed at the shape of our yard! Marvin fixed us up! Because of his professionalism, service, and value we've also hired him to cross-cut/pattern our yard 3 days before our wedding, and at the same time he will correct the missed Rock/Flower bed. I will update this post/review once the yard has been cut and the additional bed corrected. I'm confident i will be praising Marvin again! Folks, if you are looking for a GREAT Landscaping company, one you can depend on, that doesn't try to take advantage of you and isn't over priced.....Call or Text Marvin of Marvin's Landscaping. You will not be disappointed!! I've only just had the work done this week, and I've already given his name and number out to 9 of my friends!!! Thank you for everything Marvin, and i will see you on September 7th🙂 SUPER Happy Client Vicki W. The Plains, VA"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.
