Planning checklist

Prepare for success by getting started now.
1–2 months before: Plan and budget
  • Choose a budget for your hair and makeup. Be sure to account for trial runs, travel fees and tips, as well as day-of services.
  • Start collecting notes, magazine clippings, and photos to use as inspiration for your look.
  • Keep in mind any colors in your event outfit and accessories you will wear that may impact your look.
  • Research area salons or hair stylists and makeup artists. Make sure they have openings available the day of your event.
  • Consider whether you want to go to a salon the day of the event, or if you need someone to travel to you.
1 month before: Interview stylists
  • Once you have narrowed down your list, meet in person with several different hair stylists and makeup artists.
  • Schedule a trial run to help you find the best match and ensure there are no unpleasant surprises on the special day.
  • If planning to do hair and makeup at different places, make sure you can schedule both in plenty of time.
  • Schedule your hair appointment first, as makeup is always applied once the hair is finished.
  • Try out any new makeup or facial products you plan to use to ensure that you don't have a bad reaction to the products.
  • Trim your hair and, if necessary, plan for a touch-up on your hair color two weeks before your event.
1 week before: Work out travel
  • If your hair and beauty team is traveling to you, provide them with clear directions to your site.
  • Make sure your contact information is included in case there are any day-of snafus, and reconfirm appointment times.
  • To save time and reduce stress, prepay for any hair and makeup services scheduled for the day of your event.
