Planning checklist

Prepare for success by getting started now.
2 months before: Start research
  • Measure each area to determine square footage.
  • Consider your lifestyle, and narrow the search to flooring options that coincide with it.
  • Create a flooring budget that suits your finances.
  • Start checking reviews for local flooring installation experts.
  • Determine whether you want low-maintenance flooring, or if you are willing to choose flooring that requires upkeep.
6 weeks before: Consider materials
  • If the room is a bathroom or kitchen, limit yourself to flooring that withstands spills or leaks.
  • Select flooring in patterns or sizes to suit the home. Wider options tend to add the illusion of space to a smaller room.
  • Consider personalizing flooring with items that include design strips or contrasting borders.
  • Use bespoke features to create a truly unique home, or to draw attention to a favorite architectural feature.
1 month before: Select flooring samples
  • Use these samples to imagine the finished floor in your home.
  • Consider less common options like bamboo or cork to give your home a unique style, and a “green” vibe.
  • Interview and select a flooring professional.
  • Choose a date for the project's start. Make sure your pro clearly outlines the steps for each task.
2 weeks before: Choose a supplier
  • Work with a pro to place order and schedule a delivery date that coincides with your project schedule.
1 week before: Make space
  • Find a place to store furniture and other items that you need to remove from the room where the flooring is going.
  • Keep things organized by storing furniture in your garage or an empty room if possible.
  • Leave room to store the new flooring if you're having it delivered to your home ahead of time.
The day before
  • Ensure there's nothing left to move out of the space.
  • Vacuum the space to cut down on the initial mess that's made during demolition.
