Carlos promptly responded to my Thumbtack posting, came out right away provided to quote quickly perform the work two above expectations and was very easy to work with. I highly recommend considering him or your next water damage project. I wish we could find more contractors like him that did a wider range of home repair services.

Simply put - Deck Wonders provided us with excellent service and we look forward to hiring them for future flooring and/or deck needs. In fact --- after having our tile installed by Deck Wonders, we hired them for a second project installing beadboard in our laundry room. Deck Wonders is a great company to hire because they are affordable, communicate their schedule and needs properly, do the job right, and finish within a reasonable amount of time. All of these reasons were evident to my wife and I after Deck Wonders completed the initial tiling job we hired them to do. As with most home improvements, some issues don't become evident until after you pay the service provider. At that point you're either screwed because the company won't come back to look at whatever is wrong, or you'll have to shell out more of your own money to find a new contractor to correct the first contractor's mistakes. With our tiling job, we found a few issues with the transition strips between the carpet and the newly laid tile --- namely the corners on the strips were coming up. We notified Deck Wonders and they were able to come out a few days later and properly fix the transition strips at no added expense to us. What made their return visit even sweeter was that we asked Deck Wonders for a quote to install beadboard in our laundry room during this visit --- not only were they able to provide a very competitive quote but they started and finished the installation of the beadboard that afternoon! That alone left my wife and I very impressed.

Erick and his team are exceptional. I contracted Erick initially to do some minor house repairs. However, after not being satisfied with the work of contractor hired to paint, I asked Erick to do a lot more work to include painting, installation of kitchen appliance, replace flooring, miscellaneous carpentry, and electrical work. Erick was so responsive to my need to get the work done quickly as getting ready to list house. Quality of work is good, Erick knows his trade and made suggestions and recommendations that proved to be invaluable. His team are hard workers and take pride in what they do. And, the pricing is exceptional. Definitely recommend and will use again in the future.

Within approximately 5 minutes of submitting my request for plumbing help, I received a reasonable quote from Brandon, 1st Home Professional Services and we set up a date and time. He was prompt, efficient, and the problem fixed within 30 minutes. He is professional, and efficient. No doubt I will be using his services for other projects in my home.

Hands down by the best service received, customer service and overall service. I had experienced a mold "issue" with our estate and the being the director had to deal with this asap. Luis and Ed came out to inspect and recommend that the area be disinfected and restored. It is evident that Ed holds his employees to high standards and quality. The job was completed on time and schedule, cost. I can certainly refer them to anybody needing such restoration and cleaning services.

My wife and I were so pleased with the work G & G did on our deck repairs, including support posts that we did not even know needed reinforcement, and restoring the outside support concrete slab for our HVAC unit, that we recommended them to our son who needed his ceiling repaired. We are hiring them again for additional project around our home. Our son did hire them as well. Great company

We asked for proposals for duct and vent cleaning. We got a number of fast responses. We decided to pursue The Best Air Quality and Restoration based on reviews, cost proposed and the credentials and info on their website. The response from the firm was quick and we were able to schedule at my convenience. The vendor showed up on time and did the work thoroughly and professionally and even added some additional services we needed without excessive charges. I was very pleased with the work and the personnel. I asked them to follow up with me when this service was needed again. I would definitely recommend them.

Edgar has consistently provided excellent value and well crafted electrical work for our Owner / Builder new home construction project. He has roughed-in, and set outlets, switches and fixtures. Post construction he has wired a Generac whole house standby generator and added several additional circuits for me. Sometimes it is frustrating dealing with small sub-contractors; not with Edgar- he is always on time, always efficient, always great quality work. We couldn't recommend him more highly. Naser was great. He was on time, fixed our problems while only doing a estimate walk-thru, and didn't charge us anything. We insisted on giving him $50 because now we no longer need a plumber. Our big issues were the garbage disposal and leaky toilet. He found a tiny drill bit in the garbage disposal left over from kitchen contractors and fixed our toilet on the spot.

Jenrri is the hardest worker I've ever met. He has worked on renovating my house and the houses of two other members of my family, as well. The exquisite work that he can accomplish in a short amount of time is unbelievable. You will not be disappointed if you chose his company to do any of your home improvement. You will be as pleased as I have been. I will try to post pictures at another time of the amazing work he has done.

Walter of Hi Solutions responded to my thumbtack query with a competitive bid. On calling he asked succinct questions and reinforced the estimate and committed to a scheduled arrival to fix a pinhole leak in piping at my hot water heater. He arrived on time, was efficient and very courteous and careful to explain what he did and provided me some useful information about the piping in our home. I had previously gotten other estimates which were as much as twice the amount for this simple repair or from companies that would not commit to an estimate without visiting and charging a fee just to look at it. (as high as $85.00). Ct Walter's service gets 5 stars without any reservation or downside..

We had few projects for our new home that needed to be taken care of. Painting, tiling and drywall repairs. My friend recommended SR Home Improvements. She used them to repair drywall and paint and he received great service from them. I was very impressed with the initial interview with Sam, the owner. He was very knowledgeable, patient and answered all my questions about the work my home would need. He sent me a very detailed proposal right away while he was on site and answered all my questions. He was also very responsive to changes I made as the projects went along. Once the project was done, he came over to the house to make sure I was happy with the project. I am extremely happy with their service. I highly recommend them.

Cesar and his team gutted our entire bathroom, retiled the tub area and floor, and replaced all the fixtures, medicine cabinet, lighting, etc. They also installed a new fan and recessed lighting in the tub area and primed and painted the bathroom. The bath now looks like something out of House Beautiful. This was BY FAR the easiest reno we've ever done. Cesar and his assistant provided the labor and he gave us a very detailed list of everything we would need to purchase. He recommended a tub and ceiling fan and told us how to order large items from Home Depot so they would be in the "pro area" for his pickup. We investigated granite counter tops and picked out the slab and sink we wanted but Cesar saved us a fortune by picking up the counter top from the fabricator and installing it himself - perfectly. The job was more difficult because the opening for the vanity was a non-standard 47 1/2 inches and vanities come in 48 inches, but they completed everything flawlessly. Cesar and his team arrived at exactly 8 AM every morning and were immaculate about cleaning and bagging refuse. We received estimates from companies who do all the buying and installing and they were $5000-7000 more! Even the all-labor estimates were higher. Cesar did an amazing job, was totally reliable, and saved us a fortune.

NewRay Development gave me the lowest quote of 4 estimates I received and he was very professional with an outgoing personality. My job schedule was open-ended based on getting some other home repairs done first, and he was flexible and understanding. He kept me in the loop regarding his prior commitments so we could reach an agreeable timeframe. On the day of the painting, he and his crew showed up on time, got right to work, and finished in a day. They fixed lots of blemishes in my plaster walls (actually repaired them, not just spackled over them) and did an impeccable job on everything, including the trim and metal railings. Would definitely recommend.

Weather delayed my roof replacement project but when the window of opportunity came the Crew came and replaced my roof in 1 day. They even replaced some damage sub roof without any extra charge. I plan on using them again for other home improvement projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
