Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
7 Steps to Hiring a House Painter
  1. 1. Choosing colors

Decide on paint colors you want and whether or not you plan to include complementary trim colors around your windows and doors. Choose hues that pair well with your roofing.

  2. 2. Evaluating pros

Interview prospective painters and discuss the color you need. Walk around the house with them and let them point out any problem areas. Be open to recommendations to make any essential adjustments.

  3. 3. Getting guarantees

When interviewing, be sure to ask the painters offer any written guarantees in case the quality of their work is not up to your standards.

  4. 4. Scheduling painting

Plan for the project to take up to a week, including setup and teardown. This depends on the size of your house and how many crew members the painter brings along.

  5. 5. Prepping the yard

Before the project begins, ask how your contractor plans to protect any patio furniture, patios or decks around your house. Ask the contractor to protect your lawns and flowerbeds using drop cloths.

  6. 6. Prepping the house

Your contractor will set up scaffolding to access the walls, and he or she may choose to remove things like window screens and storm doors before taping them off. Have storage space ready.

  7. 7. Maintaining the work

Once the project is completed, ask your painter about any necessary routine maintenance you can perform to keep your new paint job looking as fresh as possible.
