Working with Alex was such a pleasant experience as he is very kind. Hiring private detectives can sometimes be a hit or miss, but I have absolutely no regrets. Alex is very intelligent, knows what he is doing, and more than exceeded my expectations. His level of professionalism is rare gem as he is attentive to the needs of the client, efficient in the amount of time given for a project, meets the deadlines, and innovative. He is very good at what he does and does not like to bring anything less than satisfactory to the table. Alex is bilingual in Spanish as well, which was a tremendous asset! I will definitely be working with Alex again.

I requested a skip trace on six individuals and even provided a lot of information that i had uncovered myself to help make they're job easier. I paid for the agreed upon service on April 24th and got a total of one skip trace returned. After several e-mails I asked for a refund and because I used Paypal, was able to dispute the charge to hopefully get a refund for the services that were never performed. I know that not all private investigators are as horrible as this one but STAY AWAY from this company.

Great communication from the beginning via phone and email. This is a very professional company. We received great tips from the CEO personally that led us in the right direction. The staff communicates well with us and reply quickly. I don't want to go into too much detail since the case is ongoing, but I highly recommend this company if you need a private investigator.

I have nothing bad to say about my experience. From the initial phone call through the receipt of the affidavit, STW Research & Investigation Services was very professional. Not only did Harry explain thoroughly how the process works, but he also worked with my schedule, and reimbursed me with no questions after I realized that I only needed to serve one party instead of two.

M. Rockford / MSA Drilling, I hired Homeland Protection Service for seven days to watch my production factory during renovations. Homeland did a fabulous job maintaining access controls of our delivery trucks, construction crews, vendors and employees and overall kept my facility secure. I noticed their staff paid attention, had initiative, offered some great ideas, looked sharp and were always available when I needed them. We received what we paid for and then some and I will absolutely use their services again at my other locations. Great job Homeland and thanks again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

  • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
  • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
  • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
