Over the weekend, my neighborhood and a hundred of our closest friends celebrated the Swan Terrace Pig Roast. The day was perfect - cool breeze, warm sunshine, delicious food and accompanying it all was the fabulous music from Stevie Matthews!! He was fun with the crowd, understanding of the little ones, and above all, sounded awesome. We loved the music, his humor, and we'll all be happy to see him again next summer!

He was an example of dedication and professionalism. On time, well dressed, knowledgeable, informative, in general, all the qualities you look in an American music MAESTRO. Definitely will be recommended to all my piano friends.

Xen Live helped to make my birthday party a total success! Everyone loved the variety of music that was played. Adults and kids both had a great time dancing to the music that Jay (the DJ) selected based on my preferences. I would highly recommend Xen Live.

I have hired musicians for over 25 years for different events. Mark was one of the most talented, professional, gracious and kindest person I have met. He played for a group of 60. The reviews from our guests were unlike anyone we have had in the past. We will certainly have him back in the near future. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a harpist.

I have shared numerous stages with Celeste and just love her. She is always professional, punctual, and prepared. Not to mention that she brings an amazing energy that is impossible as a performer to not want to participate with or for an audience member to not stop and take notice. She truely is one of the most talented musicians I know and one of my most favorite people on this earth.

Ok. Our outdoor office picnic got rained out at the last minute. We ended up bringing it indoors to our office, which is filled with 75 six foot high cubes. We stuck Dave and Joey in a cramped, hot doorway with a few tables and told them not to play too loud!! Wow, now that is a tough crowd. BUT we really enjoyed the show. He was a great sport about the whole crappy weather fiasco. He made the best of a lousy venue and it all worked out fine. The musicians were both professional and talented. I actually can't wait to catch his next show at a better location than I could provide!! Kudos!!

Josh and a bassist performed as a jazz duet for a cocktail hour reception. They were incredible musicians and more importantly captured exactly the vibe we were going for. Josh is a true professional. Diligent communications, arrived early, and even asked our preference for how they dress. Highly recommend.

Ron gave me a lot of help when I was learning to accompany singers and saxophone players. He showed me chord configurations that made me sound like a pro. I was asked to join a jazz combo. He was also great at accompanying me as a singer.

Cameron provided the perfect background music for our party. His repertoire was exactly what I requested, mixing genres from jazz to holiday classics to contemporary/rock. He played during our cocktail hour, but we could have listened to his music all night long. Highly recommend Cameron and his guitar!

As a beginning adult learner, I greatly appreciate John's patience, encouragement, and musical expertise. John draws during each lesson from his own experiences and education to illustrate musical concepts and impart solid technical knowledge. He sets meaningful expectations for the learner and yet is very gentle in uncovering and correcting student weaknesses. John is a warm, generous, and good-humored teacher, and it has been a delight to be his student. I am very happy with the progress I have made on the classical guitar under John's direction.

John Kunu is flexible in his approach to teaching, he brings many styles & skills to the keyboard, and he is willing to teach to what the goals of the student are rather than a regimented steps approach. John has been my daughter's piano teacher for several years. We are a musical family so it was important to us to choose a teacher with the depth in classical but also the breadth of knowledge in contemporary pop music, in order to keep our teen engaged in what she was learning. John's flexibility to teach to her interest areas while still making sure she mastered foundational skills and repertoire are rare in a piano teacher. We love that he weaves both classical instruction and improvisation so that a student is comfortable playing a piece of Bach as well as the latest songs on the radio. This has kept the learning fresh and relevant. But the greatest thing of all is when we hear our daughter wander over to the piano and just play -- she sounds beautiful and it is utter joy hearing your child make music and know that she will have this for a lifetime.

Sam Shin is an amazing singer. He has amazing talent and is also an amazing person. His lessons are the best! His classes are so fun, yet so productive. You learn so much in such little time. He makes you feel so comfortable and he really boosts your confidence. I had a very quiet and had almost no confidence but only after about three lessons I felt as if I could sing all day in front of anyone without caring. He makes singing so much fun. My voice has become so much louder and clearer within only four classes. I've only known him for about five weeks, but it feels like forever. I'm always excited to go to each lesson because each class is always a surprise. You walk out each week finding something new about your voice. I never knew my voice could get so loud, but in a good way. He has performed with American Idol season 2 winner, Ruben Studdard, at Consititution Hall, he was NY Harlem Apollo Theater Competition's 4-time winner, he has performed at the Barack Obama presidential fundraising concert, he has been on the Smithsonian documentary on American Music History, and a lot more. I can guarantee you that within only a couple classes you will see a distinctive change in your voice as long as you follow his steps and listen to his methods. If you want to learn from the best definitely choose Sam because he won't let you down! His teachings have really changed my perspective on my voice and I am now a proud singer. I am obviously not a professional but I really believe I can succeed with him by my side. -Michelle Kim-

The District Strings was fantastic. They showed up and were in place to start playing as scheduled. Their music was phonominal. All of our guests comments regarding them was exceptional. It was a great touch to have them play at our wedding reception. Their redention of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" was spot on and a great hit. Would definitely hire them again.

Adruma is probably the best percussionist I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He is a top of the line musician who I deeply respect for his professionalism, dedication and love for what he does and that means to put on his best performance every time! I highly recommend Adruma for any opportunities that come his way. Sharon Steele, President /Producer, Pasadena Theatre Company, Anne Arundel County, MD.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

          • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
          • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
          • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
